To overcome the disadvantage of hull mounted sonar, many countries operate dipping sonar system for helicopter. Although limited in performance, this system has the advantage of ensuring the survivability of the surface ship and improving the detection performance by adjusting the depth according to the ocean environment. In this paper, a method to calculate the optimal depth of the dipping sonar for helicopters is proposed by applying an optimization algorithm. In addition, in order to evaluate the performance of the sonar, the Sonar Performance Function (SPF) is defined to consider the ocean environment, the depth of the target and the depth of the dipping sonar. In order to reduce the calculation time, the optimal depth is calculated by applying Simulated Annealing (SA), one of the optimization algorithms. For the verification of accuracy, the optimal depth calculated by applying the optimization technique is compared with the calculation of the SPF. This paper also provides the results of calculation of optimal depth for ocean environment in the East sea.
In this paper, mandatory minimum requirements for certification of officers in charge of a navigational watch on ship by international convention on STCW (standards of training certification and watchkeeping for seafarers) were investigated. The training education and evaluation systems for navigational competence of Korean navy were compared and analyzed. As a result, we have confirmed that junior naval officers from Korean midshipmen had the navigational competence based on the STCW convention by analyzing the courses of Korea naval academy, midshipmen life, training exercise systems, and so on. OCS and NROTC provided a curriculum that did not quite meet the standard of the STCW convention. However, it was sufficient for nurturing basic abilities for navigation safety.

Naval ships could be seriously damaged by enemy attacks in battle. Moreover, this damage could be spread and deteriorated into a secondary accident. Secondary accidents that have adverse effects on naval ship's survivability, such as fire, flood, smoke extension, and patient occurrence, are defined as casualties. These casualties sharply degrade the survivability of naval ships. Furthermore, naval ships could be burned-out and sunk by casualties in isolated sea. Therefore, damage control and rapid suppression of the casualties in the naval ships is essential. This study was conducted in the establishment of suppression paths according to the characteristics of each casualty so that the developed system can support the rapid suppression in an emergency and even the training situation on a regular state. To establish the suppression paths, the two-dimensional numerical map is designed by converting the three-dimensional features of the naval ships, and the well known algorithms are compared to present the appropriate one for path finding problem on the naval ships. Finally, we devised a specific routing algorithm that fits the characteristics of each casualty in accordance with the Korean Navy's doctrines and handbooks of casualty suppression.

This study is to compensate for inaccuracies in accordance with the change in the deviation correction value due to the movement and location of the ship cargo, equipment of the vessel, and eliminating the inconvenience of hand. By modifying the deviation through the simplification and automation was planned for accuracy and ease of modification of the modified value. The main method used is charted by measuring 24 direction and inputting the value of magnetic compass direction in automatic deviation-correcting apparatus manually or automaticallyThe measured values are exhibited in Table data and made it possible to calculate accurate correction value deviation. From this it can make deviation table having the margin of error within ${\pm}3^{\circ}$in all regions of the world And this table will help to navigational safety and economy under the unavailable or limited gyro contion.

The Navy is in the process of developing a sonar-operation strategy to increase the effectiveness of underwater target seeking capability. HMS is the basic strategy to detect underwater targets. The advantages of HMS is that, it has a short preparation time to operate and can be always used regardless of sea conditions and weather. However, it is difficult to effectively detect underwater targets due to the interaction between marine environments and sonar-operations. During the research, the effectiveness of the HMS system's underwater target seeking capability was analyzed by integrating various search patterns and environment conditions into the simulation. In the simulation the ship target an evasive target within a set region. The simulation presented results for an effective searching methods of underwater targets. These research results can be used as foundation for advancing and improving the sonar operational tactics.

Since 1993, Successfully localized naval combat System has made steady development on various domestic and foreign ships. On the other hand, Engineering Control System(ECS) is dependent on foreign companies. Therefore, there is a lot of interest and research in the localization of ECS in the navy defense industry. As one of various studies, a preliminary study of domestic ECS software that can be commonly applied to naval ships is in progress. This paper propose Ecs Obts Scalable Platform(EOSPA) as the standard architecture of ECS On-Board Training System(OBTS) software by applying object-oriented programming and standardization. And this introduces EOSPA's structure, function, and features of each component. Furthermore, high reusability and maintainability are expected in the development of ECS OBTS software applying EOSPA in various naval ships.

Cheonan, Republic of Korea Navy patrol ship sank had happened by an unknown incident in the vicinity of Baekryeongdo southwest 1.6km(1 mile) sea at 21:45 on March 26, 2010. In terms of coastal researcher's point of view, it is meaningful to provide the sea condition of basic data necessary for search and rescue, more detailed predictions and inference data through the numerical simulations. Thus, in this study, we investigated the weather, wave, tide, tidal current, bottom soil conditions, and suspended sediment are investigated at the coast of Baekryeong-Daechung islands. And based on these data, the characteristics of sea conditions were analyzed. The tidal period at the time of incident corresponds between neap tide to mean tide. Until April 3-4 after March 26, the date of incident, the strongest velocity was progressed towards the spring tide. Thus, it was considered to be difficult to search and rescue operations. Also, because the ebb tide was in progress during 21:00 to 22:00, mass transport seems to be prevailed to the southeast. In particular, as the sudden turbulence due to the irregular topography existed was anticipated, we had carried out particle tracking experiment. From this experiment, depending on the situation of flow, the initial movement of the particles were directed to the southeast but it turned out moving towards the offshore based on the long term prediction. Through this result, it is considered that the scope of the search operation should be expanded towards the open sea.
In this paper, a plan to expand the scale of the domestic MRO industry was proposed by finding the technical common points between the aviation MRO and naval vessel MRO industries. The aviation MRO industry is led by Europe, North America, and Singapore. Europe and North America have very large aviation industries. The reason for the development of the MRO industry in Singapore is that the aviation MRO and ship MRO industries gathered to expand the industrial scale. The MRO field is an industry that spans all fields from research & development, production, manufacturing, operation, disposal, and crew training. The MRO industry is divided into military and civilian use. However, most of them are only differences in the needs of users, and there are no significant technical differences. The weapon system used by the military is steadily developing. It is impossible for the military to maintain all equipment at a time when troops are reduced. For that reason, it is necessary to share roles in each field. There is a need for an MRO industry in which civil and military operations cooperate to maintain all weapon systems at optimal performance. And the MRO industry development should be based on the civil market. The scale of the MRO industry should be expanded by gathering equipment commonly used in aircraft and naval vessels. This can increase military availability and reduce maintenance budgets.

The shock fracture analysis for the structures of navy vessels subject to underwater explosions or of high speed vessels frequently subject to impact loads has been carried out in two steps such as the global or macro analysis and the fine or micro analysis. In the macro analysis, Doubly Asymptotic Approximation(DAA) has been applied. The three main failure modes of structure members subject to strong shock loading are late time fracture mode such as plastic large deformation mainly due to dynamic plastic buckling, and the early time fracture mode such as tensile tearing failure or transverse shear failure. In this paper, the tensile tearing failure mode is numerically analyzed for the micro analysis by calculating the dynamic stress intensity factor $K_I(t)$, which shows the relation between stress wave and crack propagation on the longitudinal stiffener of the model. Especially, in calculating this factor, the numerical caustic method developed from shadow optical method of caustic well known as experimental method is used. The fully submerged vessel is adopted for the macro analysis at first, of which the longitudinal stiffener, subject to early shock pressure time history calculated in macro analysis, is adopted for the micro analysis.
Recently, vessel hijacking by pirates has been a big issue around the world. For example, the hostages of VLCC "SAMHO Dream" were released for a large sum of ransom. On January 20, 2011 "SAMHO Jewelry" succeeded releasing all of the 21 crews on the vessel by attacking the pirates in international waters for the first time since the founding of the Naval Force. Furthermore, the "HANJIN Tianjin" crews evacuated to the Citadel promptly and were rescued by the navy. As hijacking of Korean vessels by pirates is increasing, various safety measures must be implemented. As a matter of fact, the standard for ship's facilities has been partially revised and setting up an evacuation shelter on all vessels sailing dangerous zone has been reinforced. This research aims to discuss crew Citadel installation on vessels intended for long haul. In addition, it will look at measures against potential gas flow in the event of pirate armed attacks and fire outbreak onboard a vessel. It will also assess the optimal number of crew Citadels theoretically. Lastly, the optimal number of shelters in the event of fire outbreak will be discussed based on an FDS simulation.
