Calculation of Flows around Container Ship Models with Different Reynolds Numbers (Reynolds 수가 다른 컨테이너선 모형 주위의 유동 계산)

  • CFD calculations are performed for KRISO 3600TEU container ship(KCS) models with different Reynolds numbers. Numerical calculations of the turbulent flows with the free surface around KCS have been carried out at $Re=0.791{\times}106\;and\;Re=1.4{\times}107$ using a standard Fluent package. In both cases, Froude number is fixed with 0.26 and wave elevation is simulated by using the VOF method. The calculated results at $Re=1.4{\times}107\;and\;Re=0.791{\times}106$ are compared with the experiment data of KRISO towing tank test and RIMS CWC test, respectively. Boundary layer thickness and wake field shows Reynolds number differences. There are some changes in wave pattern behind transom stern.

  • IMO adopted ' International Convention for The Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments ' on February 13th 2004. According to this convention, a ballast water treatment system should be installed in all ships obligatorily up to a standard date. When the system is installed, economic propriety should be considered. The economic propriety analysis examines the profit of a relevant project which can be presented by a equation, (Profit) = (income) - (expense) - (tax). However, the ballast water system is not for the profit during the life cycle but for the satisfaction of the regulation. Therefore, the expense should be minimum against the profit. This study presents the LCC(Life-Cycle Cost) analysis for economic evaluation of several ballast water system of foreign products.

  • The performance of the waterjet system of 180 ton class fishing guard ship has been experimentally studied. A waterjet propulsion system has many advantages in comparison with a conventional screw propeller especially for high speed craft because of its good cavitation performance. Recently waterjet system has been applied to fishing boats and fishing guard ship because of avoiding a net problem although their speeds are not so high. This paper describes experimental procedure and analysis method of resistance and self-propulsion tests with a 1/14.46-scale model. Experimental results were analyzed according to ITTC 96 standard method. The full-scale effective power and delivered power of the ship were also analyzed and the full-scale speed predicted from the model test results shows a good agreement with the full-scale result from the sea trial tests.

  • The authors adopt the Unmanned Undersea Vehicle(UUV), which has taken the shape of manta(Sohn et al. 2006). They call here it Manta-type Unmanned Undersea Test Vehicle(MUUTV). MUUTV is based on the same design concept as UUV called Manta Test Vehicle, which was originally built and operated by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center(Lisiewicz and French 2000, Sirmalis et al. 2001). In order to evaluate manoeuvring motion characteristics of MUUTV, numerical simulation technique has been utilized. Previous mathematical model on manoeuvring motion of MUUTV(Sohn et al. 2006) is basically adopted. Result of static experiment carried out in circulating water channel and a part of NSRDC standard model(Feldman 1979) on rotational mode are supplemented. Some of the hydrodynamic derivatives are obtained from model experiment in circulating water channel and the rest of them are estimated.

  • Increased usage of AUVs has led to the development of alternative navigational methods that use the acoustic beacons and dead reckoning. This paper describes a concurrent mapping and localization (CML) scheme that uses range sonars mounted on SNUUV­I, which is a small test AUV developed by Seoul National University. The CML is one of such alternative navigation methods for measuring the environment that the vehicle is passing through. In addition, it is intended to provide relative position of AUV by processing the data from sonar measurements. A technique for CML algorithm which uses several ranging sonars is presented. This technique utilizes an extended Kalman filter to estimate the location of the AUV. In order for the algorithm to work efficiently, the nearest neighbor standard filter is introduced as the algorithm of data association in the CML for associating the stored targets the sonar returns at each time step. The proposed CML algorithm is tested by simulations under various conditions. Experiments in a towing tank for one dimensional navigation are conducted and the results are presented. The results of the simulation and experiment show that the proposed CML algorithm is capable of estimating the position of the vehicle and the object and demonstrates that the algorithm will perform well in the real environment.

  • Korean coastal fishery suffers from profitability degradation due to a decrease in fisheries resources, pollution in coastal waters, fuel coast increase, and market opening for aquaculture products. The next generation Korean fishing vessel aims at the improvement of energy efficiency, enhancement of crew welfare, and safety. These purposes can be accomplished by adopting a new standard hull form with improved resistance performance and a modernized residence facility on the deck. In order to improve resistance performance, this study attempts to optimize design variables for stern flaps for three kinds of fishing vessels - coastal multi-purpose, coastal trap, and dredged nets. A series of model tests for these fishing vessels was carried out in the towing tank of Pusan National University. The results indicate that for some cases, the stern flap caused the stern trim of the vessel to decrease, leading to the resistance reduction.

Bubble formation in globe valve and flow characteristics of partially filled pipe water flow

  • Air bubble entrainment is a phenomenon that can significantly reduce the efficiency of liquid motion in piping systems. In the present study, the bubble formation mechanism in a globe valve with 90% water fraction flow is explained by visualization study and pressure oscillation analysis. The shadowgraph imaging technique is applied to illustrate the unsteady flow inside the transparent valve. This helps to study the effect of bubbles induced by the globe valve on pressure distribution and valve flow coefficient. International Society of Automation (ISA) recommends locations for measuring pressure drop of the valve to determine its flow coefficient. This paper presents the comparison of the pressures at different locations along with the upstream and the downstream of the valve with the values at recommended positions by the ISA standard. The results show that in partially filled pipe flow, the discrepancies in pressure between different measurement locations in the valve downstream are significant at valve openings less than 30%. The aerated flow induces the oscillation in pressure and flow rate, which leads to the fluctuation in the flow coefficient of the valve. The flow coefficients have a linear relationship with the Reynolds number. For the same increase of Reynolds number, the flow coefficients grow faster with larger valve openings and level off at the opening of 50%.

  • The present study aims to assess test uncertainty assessment method of nominal wake field measurement by a Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) system in a towing tank. The systematic uncertainty of the SPIV system was estimated from repeated uniform flow measurements. In the uniform flow measurement case, time interval between image frames and uniform flow speed were varied to examine the effects of particle displacement and flow around the SPIV system on the systematic standard uncertainty. The random standard uncertainty was assessed by repeating nominal wake field measurements and the estimated random standard uncertainty was compared with that of laser Doppler velocimetry. The test uncertainty assessment method was applied to nominal wake measurement tests of a very large crude oil carrier model ship. The nominal wake measurement results were compared with existing experimental database by other measurement methods, with its assessed uncertainty.

A Study on the Standard Architecture of Weapon Control Software on Naval Combat System

  • The Weapon Control Software performs the function of supporting weapon operation within the Naval Combat System in connection with the Weapon System. As Weapon Control Software depends on an Weapon System, it has the characteristic that software modification is unavoidable with the change in Interface information. Modification of software causes an increase in development costs since it must take verification step such as software reliability test. In this paper, We design the standard architecture of weapon control software to minimize the modification elements of existing weapon control software. For Interface information management, Feature Model were applied to make a division between common factor and variable factor. In addition, Strategy Pattern were applied to improve the software design. Software evaluation test results show that new architecture provides better modifiability and reuse than existing software as well as the cost of development decrease.

3D printing of multiple container models and their trajectory tests in calm water

  • More and more shipping containers are falling into the sea due to bad weather. Containers lost at sea negatively affect the shipping line, the trader and the consumer, and the environment. The question of locating and recovering dropped containers is a challenging engineering problem. Model-testing of small-scaled container models is proposed as an efficient way to investigate their falling trajectories to salvage them. In this study, we first build a standard 20-ft container model in SOLIDWORKS. Then, a three-dimensional (3D) geometric model in the STL (Standard Tessellation Language) format is exported to a Stratasys F170 Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printer. In total, six models were made of acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) and printed for the purpose of testing. They represent three different loading conditions with different densities and center of gravity (COG). Two samples for each condition were tested. The physical models were dropped into the towing tank of University of New Orleans (UNO). From the experimental tests, it is found that the impact of the initial position after sinking can cause a certain initial rolling velocity, which may have a great impact on the lateral displacement, and subsequently affect the final landing position. This series of model tests not only provide experimental data for the study of the trajectory of box-shape objects but also provide a valuable reference for maritime salvage operations and for the pipeline layout design.
