  • This study was focused on measurement methods for stone cultural heritages by analyzing Ultrasonic (P-wave) velocity variations according to the water content and anisotropy of rocks. As a result of analyzing of rock properties, the water content and saturation degree were rapidly changed at the beginning of drying and then showed exponential curve which their rates of change gradually decreased. However, P-wave velocity and its rate of change maintained constant values after natural drying of 10 hours. Therefore, the ultrasonic measurement for stone cultural heritages should be performed after natural drying of 10 hours considering the weather and moisture conditions. In addition, the highest values of anisotropy coefficient exhibited in granite and limestone, and indirect method was insensitive to anisotropy compared to direct method. However, all rocks remained anisotropy by indirect method. Accordingly, ultrasonic measurement considering various directions is required. The research results will contribute to customized non-destructive testing and precise diagnosis for lithological characteristics of stone cultural heritage.

  • There are 334 coal mines and about 900 metal mines abandoned. The environmental problems such as acid mine drainage from adits etc. and the subsidence has occurred in the abandoned mines. In addition, soil has been contaminated by tailings. According to analysis of mine drainages, some of them from adits in the abandoned coal and metallic mines were acidic and polluted by heavy metals. Especially, water quality of coal mine drainages were different by areas. Treatment of mine drainage by conventional chemical treatment has the drawback because the operating cost is very expensive. The treatment system used in mine drainage is the natural treatment system such as anoxic limestone drain in adits and the constructed wetland. The method of reclamation for abandoned waste rocks and tailings impoundments are mainly landfilling.

  • Recently, there have been several cases of serious accidents on concrete structure resulting from rapid deterioration of concrete strength. On the view point of long term stability of concrete, deterioration of concrete strength is mostly due to chemical reaction between alkali and reactive aggregates (alkali-aggreagte reaction; AAR) in concrete rather than a problem of execution. For long-term stability of concrete, concrete aggregates must be carefully selected. Some of rocks used for concrete aggregates contain deleterious minerals reactive to alkali components in concrete. Most of AAR result from chemical reaction between alkali components and reactive silica minerals in aggregates (so called alkali-silica reaction; ASR). The silica minerals are as follows; quartz with seriously distorted lattice structure, volcanic glass, chalcedony, opal, cristobalite, tridymite, etc. ASR may cause expansion and cracks, further collapse in concrete structure, in a few years. In case of crushed aggregates, only a part of rock mass without reactive minerals must be produced in aggregates mine after thorough examination of the distribution of rocks with reactive minerals. In case of natural aggregates, the total content of reactive minerals must be calculated, if, the content is more than 20%, the rate should be lower by mixing other non-reactive crushed- or natural aggregates. If it is obliged to use concrete aggregates all containing deleterious minerals in a discrete area, they must be used with low alkali cement Even if it is low quality in the chemical properties, aggregates with suitable range in the physical properties can be utilized as the aggregate of other purposes.

  • Hydrochemical characteristics of deep groundwater at Surak-ri, Nonsan-gun, Chungnam Province was explained by major ion concentration, water type, and phase stability diagram. The area is composed of meta-sedimentary rock and quartz pophyry. The 5 boreholes where deep groundwater was sampled and analyzed are located on the meta-sedimentary rocks and drilling depth range of the wells is from 554 m to 928 m. pH, TDS, Na, and SiO2 values are high in the groundwater from meta-sedimentary area intruded by quartz pophyry, while Ca is high in the groundwater from meta-sedimentary area. K and Mg concentrations are low but F concentration is high both groundwater. The content of major anions is in the order of CO3(HCO3)>Cl>SO4(F) in both geology, while that of major cations shows the order of Na>Ca>K(Mg) in meta-sedimentary area intruded by quartz porphyry and a>Na>Mg>Na in meta-sedimentary area. Based on the phase equilibrium in the systems Na2O-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O and K2O-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O, the groundwater is saturated with respect to Quartz and more evolved compared with the natural mineral water. It is concluded that chemical evolution in the groundwater from meta-sedimentary area intruded by quartz porphyry, is nearly saturated with respect to feldspar, while the groundwater from meta-sedimentary area continue to proceed with increasing pH by reaction of feldspar.

  • A retaining wall system is widely constructed civil structure to maximize the effectiveness of practical use of the land. Recently, the technology which is more eco-friendly and owns seismic stability of the retaining wall system becomes important. In this study, an Eco-BELT system using natural rocks as the front wall is introduced and the seismic characteristics of the Eco-BELT system are analyzed based on 2 and 3 dimensional numerical analysis. The soil-structure interface comprises between backfill soil and natural rocks are considered. The relative density is mainly considered to influence the seismic behavior of Eco-BELT system, and T-shaped deadman is also considered to judge the increase of seismic stability. As a result, lateral displacement of the wall decreases 29.5% in maximum under 90% of relative density and decreases 21.2 to 21.9% with T-shaped deadman, therefore, the seismic effectiveness of T-shaped deadman and increasing relative density of backfill are verified by numerical analysis.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the contents of minerals and ionic components in domestic commercial natural mineral waters, and to investigate the relationship between water quality and characteristics of suspended and rocks there of its source. All mineral waters tested in this study met the korean mineral water quality guideline, although chemical components varied widely depending upon the geological characteristics and degree of urbanization of the source area or physical water treatment method. The water quality of commercial bottled water was different from that of source water, especially in cationic components, and showed a tendency to become worse with time elapsed. The water quality on the bottle was also different from the measured quality.

  • Fracture behavior of brittle solids such as rocks, ceramics and concrete is closely related to microcracking. A meso-scale analysis method using the natural element method is proposed for the analysis of material damage of brittle microcracking solids. The microcracking is assumed to occur along Voronoi edges in the Voronoi diagram generated using the nodal points as the generators. The mechanical effect of microcracks is considered by controlling the material constants in the neighborhood of the microcracks. The proposed meso analysis method is applied to the simulation of the microcracking behaviors of brittle solids subjected to uniaxial and biaxial macrostress. The obtained results are in good agreement with the results by computational damage mechanics model. The validity of the proposed method has been demonstrated by these numerical examples.

  • Sessile barnacle, Balanus trigonus Darwin, was collected from the intertidal rocks and the external shells of bivalve Mylius coruscus. The nauplius and cyprid larvae were cultured in a constant temperature cabinet at a temperature of $20^{\circ}C$ and a light regime of 14 h light and 10 h darkness. Larval development includes the six nauplius stages and a cyprid stage prior to settlement and metamorphosis to the young adult. Morphological characteristics including antennules, antennae and mandibles are described and illustrated. All nauplius larvae have trilobed labra typical in balanoides. The developmental time taken from newly hatched nauplius I to cyprid was $9\~13$ days and averaged 11 days.

  • A meso-scale analysis method using the natural element method, which is a kind of meshless method, is proposed for the analysis of material damage of brittle microcracking solids such as ceramic materials, concrete and rocks. The microcracking is assumed to occur along Voronoi edges in the Voronoi diagram generated using the nodal points as the generators. The mechanical effect of microcracks is considered by controlling the material constants in the neighborhood of the microcracks. The macro elastic moduli of anisotropic as well as isotropic solids containing a number of randomly distributed microcracks are calculated in order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.
