  • In the present study, the axial vibration of the nanorods is investigated in the framework of the doublet mechanics theory. The equations of motion and boundary conditions of nanorods are derived by applying the Hamilton principle. A finite element method is developed to obtain the vibration frequencies of nanorods for different boundary conditions. A two-noded higher order rod finite element is used to solve the vibration problem. The natural frequencies of nanorods obtained with the present finite element analysis are validated by comparing the results of classical doublet mechanics and nonlocal strain gradient theories. The effects of rod length, mode number and boundary conditions on the axial vibration frequencies of nanorods are examined in detail. Mode shapes of the nanorods are presented for the different boundary conditions. It is shown that the doublet mechanics model can be used for the dynamic analysis of nanotubes, and the presented finite element formulation can be used for mechanical problems of rods with unavailable analytical solutions. These new results can also be used as references for the future studies.

  • An account of second-order fractional-step methods and boundary conditions for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented. The present work has aimed at (i) identification and analysis of all possible splitting methods of second-order splitting accuracy; and (ii) determination of consistent boundary conditions that yield second-order accurate solutions. It has been found that only three types (D, P and M) of splitting methods called the canonical methods are non-degenerate so that all other second-order splitting schemes are either degenerate or equivalent to them. Investigation of the properties of the canonical methods indicates that a method of type D is recommended for computations in which the zero divergence is preferred, while a method of type P is better suited to the cases when highly-accurate pressure is more desirable. The consistent boundary conditions on the tentative velocity and pressure have been determined by a procedure that consists of approximation of the split equations and the boundary limit of the result. The pressure boundary condition is independent of the type of fractional-step methods. The consistent boundary conditions on the tentative velocity were determined in terms of the natural boundary condition and derivatives of quantities available at the current timestep (to be evaluated by extrapolation). Second-order fractional-step methods that admit the zero pressure-gradient boundary condition have been derived. The boundary condition on the new tentative velocity becomes greatly simplified due to improved accuracy built in the transformation.

  • The so-called boundary node method (or NDIF method) that was developed by the authors has been extended for free vibration analysis of arbitrarily shaped plates with free edges. Since the proposed method is based on the collocation method, no integration procedure is needed on boundary edges of the plates and only a small amount of numerical calculation is required. A special coordinate transformation has been devised to consider the complicated free boundary conditions at boundary nodes. By the use of the special coordinate transformation, the radius of curvature involved in the free boundary conditions can be successfully dealt with. Finally, verification examples show that natural frequencies obtained by the present method agree well with those given by exact method and other analytical methods.

  • This paper studies the influence of internal moving fluid and flow-induced structural instability of multi-wall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid. Detailed results are demonstrated for the variation of natural frequencies with flow velocity, and the flow-induced divergence and flutter instability characteristics of multi-wall carbon nanotubes conveying fluid and modelled as a thin-walled beam are investigated. Effects of various boundary conditions, Van der Waals forces, and non-classical transverse shear and rotary inertia are incorporated in this study. The governing equations and three different boundary conditions are derived through Hamilton's principle. Numerical analysis is performed by using extended Galerkin's method which enables us to obtain more exact solutions compared with conventional Galerkin's method. This paper also presents the comparison between the characteristics of single-wall and multi-wall carbon nanotubes considering the effect of van der Waals forces. Variations of critical flow velocity for different boundary conditions of two-wall carbon nanotubes are investigated and pertinent conclusion is outlined.

  • The axisymmetric free vibrations of transversely isotropic magnetoelectroelastic laminated circular plates are studied. Based on the three-dimensional governing equations of magnetoelectroelastic medium, the state space equations of laminated circular plates are obtained. By using the finite Hankel transform and rendering the free terms left by the transform in terms of the boundary quantities, the solutions of the state space equations are given for two kinds of boundary conditions. The frequency equations of the free vibration are derived using the propagator matrix method and the boundary conditions at top and bottom surfaces. By virtue of the inverse Hankel transform, the mode shapes are also determined. Since the solutions strictly satisfy the governing equations in the region and the boundary conditions at the edges, they are the three-dimensionally exact. Finally, the natural frequencies of such plates are tabulated and compared with those of the piezoelectric and elastic plates in the numerical example.

  • In this study, the nonlinear vibrations of stepped beams having different boundary conditions were investigated. The equations of motions were obtained by using Hamilton's principle and made non dimensional. The stretching effect induced non-linear terms to the equations. Natural frequencies are calculated for different boundary conditions, stepped ratios and stepped locations by Newton-Raphson Method. The corresponding nonlinear correction coefficients are also calculated for the fundamental mode. At the second part, an alternative method is produced for the analysis. The calculated natural frequencies and nonlinear corrections are used for training an artificial neural network (ANN) program which has a multi-layer, feed-forward, back-propagation algorithm. The results of the algorithm produce errors less than 2.5% for linear case and 10.12% for nonlinear case. The errors are much lower for most cases except clamped-clamped end condition. By employing the ANN algorithm, the natural frequencies and nonlinear corrections are easily calculated by little errors, and the computational time is drastically reduced compared with the conventional numerical techniques.

  • A very simple and computationally efficient numerical method is developed for the free vibration of arbitrary shape plates. A set of two- dimensional simple series functions is used as an admissible displacement functions in the Rayleigh-Ritz method to obtain the natural frequencies for the arbitrary shape plates. From the prescribed starting function satisfying only the geometric boundary conditions, the higher terms in the series function are constructed with adding order of polynomial. Natural frequencies are obtained for the arbitrary shape plates, with combinational boundary conditions. The obtained numerical results are presented, some cases are verified with other numerical methods in the literature.

  • A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of vibration of beams and tower structures, with irregular cross-sections and with arbitrary boundary conditions was developed and reported by D. H. Kim in 1974. This method has been developed for two-dimensional problems including the laminated composite plates and was proved to be very effective for the plates with arbitrary boundary conditions and irregular sections. In this paper, the result of application of this method to the subject problem is presented. This problem represents the building slabs with a kind of passive and active control devices. Any method may be used to obtain the deflection influence surfaces needed for this vibration analysis. Finite difference method is used for this purpose, in this paper. The influence of the modulus of the foundation on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied.

  • A new perturbation method is introduced to study the undamped free vibration of a non-prismatic Timoshenko beam for its natural frequencies and vibration modes. For simplicity, the natural modes of vibration of its corresponding prismatic Euler-Bernoulli beam with the same length and boundary conditions are used as Ritz base functions with necessary modifications to account for shear strain in the Timoshenko beam. The new method can transform two coupled partial differential equations governing the transverse vibration of the non-prismatic Timoshenko beam into a set of nonlinear algebraic equations. It significantly simplifies the solution process and is applicable to non-prismatic beams with various boundary conditions. Three examples indicated that the new method is more accurate than the previous perturbation methods. It successfully takes into account the effect of shear deformation of Timoshenko beams particularly at the free end of cantilever structures.

  • Composite materials have various complicated characteristics depending on the ply materials, ply orientations, ply stacking sequences and boundary conditions. Therefore, it is difficult to analyze composite materials. For efficient use of composite materials in engineering applications, the dynamic behavior such as natural frequencies and nodal patterns should be identified. This study presents FEM results for the free vibration of symmetrically and antisymmetrically laminated composite and hybrid composite rectangular plates. The natural frequencies of laminated composite rectangular plates having the various boundary conditions (completely clamped, 2-edge clamped, cantilevered) are experimentally obtained. In order to demonstrate the validity of the experiment, FEM analysis using ANSYS was performed and natural frequencies experimentally obtained is compared with that calculated by FEM analysis. The results obtained from both experiment and FEM analysis show a good agreement.
