An Experimental Study for Dryer (건조기 고안 제작에 관한 연구)

  • A newly devised dryer with heated air for the farm products, especially suited for high water content materials such as red pepper, Beer ground, each Vegetables, and Low water content materials such as Rough rice was tested for its thermal efficiency and drying mechanism, and the optimum conditions for each sample were established. In order to improve the present rural situation of drying farm products which entirely dependent upon natural solar radiation, a study upon an economic multi-parpose dryer was conducted. A series of drying tests were run first with red pepper which is one of the important cash crop in Korean farm. And successive series of tests were also run with such proaucts as garlic, sweet potatoes, green onion, radish, Beer ground and Rough rice. The results from the above experiment in drying system with heat dryer can be summarized as follows. 1. Drying duration could be shortened by the tempering effect in high water content crop such as red pepper and beer ground. 2. The color changes occured in around 20% water content in red pepper. The degree of color change was heavily affected by high temperature and short drying duration. 3. The drying condition of red pepper was most favourable at the temperature of 85$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 80$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and 75$^{\circ}C$ at the final stage, and with the air rate of 0.81㎥/sec and with sample amount of 200kg. 4. The drying condition of Rough rice(I.R.667) was most favourable at the templature of 40$^{\circ}C$ in early stage and 35$^{\circ}C$ in middle stage and final stage and with the air rate of 0.2㎥/sec and with sample amount of 75kg. 5. In order to prevent the color change of red pepper and to assure high efficiency in drying mechanism, it was necessary to lower the temperature as the time passes in drying process. 6. For vege tables, the drying rate were short in early stage and there was also tempering effect. However, for garlics, Constant drying rates through the early and final stages were observed and there were no tempering effects. 7. Separation of Limonen from Waste Citrus Peels by Venturi Vacuum Drying and Production of Bioethanol (벤튜리 진공건조에 의한 폐 감귤박으로부터 리모넨 분리 및 바이오 에탄올 생산)

  • Limonene was separated from waste citrus peels by a vacuum drying process with a venturi, and bioethanol was produced from dried citrus peels. Vacuum drying using venturi was very effective in removing moisture and limonene compared to hot air drying and natural drying. Citrus peels prepared by venturi vacuum drying were the most suitable for ethanol fermentation. The moisture and limonene content of the citrus peels dried for 15 hours were 17.0% and 3.2%, respectively. By venturi vacuum drying, essential oil containing limonene and floral water were obtained, respectively. The amount of essential oil separated by venturi vacuum drying was 4.21 mL essential oil/kg citrus peel, 79.9% of the separated essential oil was limonene.

Development of Solar Warehouse for Drying and Storing the Agricultural Products (농산물(農産物) 건조(乾燥) 및 저장(貯藏)을 위(爲)한 태양열(太陽熱) 저장고(貯藏庫)의 개발(開發)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • Recent concern regarding price and availability of fossil fuels has spurred the interest in alternative sources for farm crop drying. Among the available options such as biomass energy, wind power, nuclear energy and solar energy etc., the increasing attention is being directed to the utilization of heat from solar energy especially for farm crop drying. Even though solar energy is dispersed over a large land area and only a relatively small amount of energy can be simply collected, the advantages of solar energy is that the energy is free, non-polluting. The study reported here was designed to help supply the informations for the development of simple and relatively inexpensive solar warehouse for farm crop drying and storage. Specifically, the objectives of this study were to determine the performance of the solar collector fabricated, to compare solar supplemented heat drying with natural air drying and to develop a simulation model of temperature in stored grain, which can be used to study the effects due to changes in ambient air temperature. For those above objectives, solar collector was fabricated from available materials. Corrugated steel galvanized sheet, painted flat black, was used as absorbers and clear 0.2mm polyethylene sheet was the cover material. The warehouse for rough rice drying and storage was constructed with concrete block, and the solar collector was used as the roof of warehouse instead of original roofing system of it. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. The thermal efficiency of the solar collector was average 26 percent and the overall heat transfer coefficient of the collector was approximately $25kJ/hr.m^2\;^{\circ}K$. 2. Solar heated air was sufficient to dry one cubic meter of rough rice from 23.5 to 15.0 percent in 7 days and natural air was able to dry the same amount of rough rice from 20.0 to 5 percent in l2 days. 3. Drying with solar heat reduced the required drying time to dry the same amount of rough rice into a half compared to natural air drying, but overdrying problems of the bottom layer were so severe that these problems should be thoroughly analyzed. 4. Simulation model of temperature in stored grain was developed and the results of predicted temperature agreed well with test results. 5. Based on those simulated temperature, changes in the grain-temperature were a large at the points of the wallside and the damage of the grain would be severe at the contact area of wall.

Change of fucoxanthin and total antioxidant capacities of Saccharina japonica during the drying process (다시마의 건조 과정 중에 발생하는 후코잔틴(fucoxanthin)과 총항산화능의 변화)

  • Kelp (Saccharina japonica) contains various bioactive compounds, including vitamins, minerals (especially iodine and potassium), alginic acid, fucoxanthin, and various antioxidants. Kelp is mainly used as a dried product. The purpose of this study was to investigate the stabilities of antioxidant capacities and fucoxanthin of kelp by different conventional drying conditions including hot air drying at 70℃ and natural drying methods. Fucoxanthin, total phenolic contents, and total antioxidant capacity by ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP assays were significantly decreased after 5 to 10 h of hot air drying at 70℃. The assay values were also significantly decreased by 50% after 2 days of drying due to ultraviolet exposure. The findings demonstrate that heat and ultraviolet exposure during drying of kelp could affect the degradation of bioactive compounds, especially fucoxanthin and polyphenols. Optimal conditions should be considered during kelp drying and storage.

Effect of Cross-Sectional Dimension on the Shrinkage Property of Korean Red-Pine Wood (소나무재의 단면치수에 따른 수축률 특성)

  • Red pine (Pinus densiflora) has been used for structural wood members of Korean traditional residence (HANOK) and historic wooden structures. For these constructions, generally, natural drying has conducted for long time; however, unless drying is conducted sufficiently, it could cause several drying defects such as check or warping. Shrinkage changes of red pine species for small clear specimens and big-size specimens according to the conditions of moisture contents, were examined. For the estimation of volumetric shrinkage at a special moisture content, it was more precise to divide the range of moisture contents into two groups, green to air-dry and air-dry to oven-dry. The volumetric shrinkage had no difference with specimen sizes in sapwood, but decreased as specimen size increased in heartwood.

  • A hitherto unknown substance was isolated from the commercial sample of Aloe arborescens, which was shown to be the 4',6'-O-ethylidene-aloenin, most likely an artifact caused by hot-air drying procedure for the product preparation.

  • The chromosome numbers of two sea anemones, Anthopleura midori and A. kurogane, were determined to be 2n=18 in both by the air-drying method. The chromosomes of A, midori are all telocentric, while the first pair of chromosomes of A. kurogane is subtelocentric and the remainders are all telocentric.

  • Simulation model of natural air grain drying was discussed and modified to predict the changes of grain moisture content and dry matter loss of rough rice drying. The modified simulation model was then validated using actual test data. A series of simulated drying tests using official weather data for 15 years from Beaumont, Texas, was taken to make minimum airflow rate and maximum bed depth of rough rice drying by natural air, under different conditions of initial moisture content of rough rice, airflow rate and harvest date.

Inhibition of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Nitric Oxide (NO) by Gelidium elegans Using Alternative Drying and Extraction Conditions in 3T3-L1 and RAW 264.7 Cells

  • Gelidium (G.) elegans is a red alga inhabiting intertidal areas of North East Asia. We examined anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of G. elegans, depending on drying and extraction conditions, by determining reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) in 3T3-L1 and RAW 264.7 cells. Extraction yields of samples using hot air drying (HD) and far-infrared ray drying (FID) were significantly higher than those using natural air drying (ND). The 70% ethanol extracts showed the highest total phenol and flavonoid contents compared to other extracts (0, 30, and 50% ethanol) under tested drying conditions. The scavenging activity on 2,2-diphenyl- 1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and nitrite correlated with total phenol or flavonoid content in the extracts. The greatest DPPH scavenging effect was observed in 70% ethanol extract from FID and HD conditions. The production of ROS and NO in 3T3-L1 and macrophage cells greatly decreased with the 70% ethanol extraction derived from FID. This study suggests that 70% ethanol extraction of G. elegans dried by FID is the most optimal condition to obtain efficiently antioxidant compounds of G. elegans.

The Properties of Concrete Incorporating Stone Powders as Part of Fine Aggregates (잔골재의 일부로 사용된 부순골재 미분말이 콘크리트 성질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was intended to evaluate the properties of concrete incorporating stone powders which are created during crushing natural stones to produce crushed aggregates. For concretes with 0~30 wt.% partial replacement fine aggregates with stone powders, experiments of slump, air content, strength and drying shrinkage were carried out. The experiments found that the increase of the amount of stone powders sharply decreased slump and air content. Partially using stone powders instead of fine aggregates was found to increase both compressive and tensile strength slightly. Substituting higher amount of stone powders presented higher drying shrinkage. When HRWRA was added into the concrete with stone powders in order to obtain workability similar to that of plain concrete without stone powders for the same water-cement ratio and unit weight of cement, air content increased with the amount of HRWRA but strength and drying shrinkage were hardly affected by adding HRWRA.
