This study is an analysis of how national newspapers and local newspapers frame news contents over selecting of the site of International science-business belt. The results of analysis are as follows. First, in national newspapers, 'incompetent government frame' to criticize inconsistent policies and 'relapse prevention frame' were most commonly found. Second, newspapers in the region chosen as the site of an International Science-business belt and newspapers in the region not chosen showed a severe contrast in news frames. Most of news frames in the region chosen as the site of an International science-business belt were 'development frame' and 'performance frame'. On the other hand, newspapers in the region not chosen produced 'incompetent government frame' and 'protest frame' more than others. Finally, local newspapers in the area not related with the site of an International Science-business belt did not even deal with such an articles. These results show that to win large-scale national projects such as PIMFI facilities, local governments have been too much competitive and connected to a conflict.
This study aims to analyze how the Korean liberal and conservative newspapers cover the filibuster for blocking the passage of the anti-terrorism act for the protection of citizens and public security by the main opposition party. For the comparative analysis of the Korean liberal and conservative newspapers, this study analyzes how the newspapers used news frame, news source, key word, and news theme. To analyze the effects on news coverage of the newspapers' ideological orientation, this study selects six newspapers: Hankyoreh Shinmun, Kyunghyang Shinmun, Ohmynews from liberal newspapers and Chosun Ilbo, Donga Ilbo, Joongang Ilbo from conservative newspapers. According to research findings, the liberal and conservative newspapers show clear distinction while using news frames when the newspapers cover the filibuster. The liberal newspapers cover the filibuster as a positive political action while the conservative newspapers cover the filibuster as a negative political action. In addition, as key word, "disturbance" is mentioned most by the conservative newspapers while "poisonous clauses" is used most by the liberal newspapers. As a result, this study shows that newspapers are influenced by ideological orientations while covering political issues.
Korean religionist have actively participated in the movements of national security and peace, human rights and dignity, freedom and equal rights, and other social issues. Recently, either progressive or conservative religionists have strongly shown their different approaches in solving social issues, i.e., national security and peace in connection of 'national security law.' A few religious leaders' public views have been misused by some politicians. It is important for both the religionists and journalists in religious newspapers how to bring a harmonious resolution among the people who are either in conservatism or in progressivism. Social participation of religionists is both to respond to the timely situation of civil society and to realize freedom, equality, and peace to the society. Although the principle of the separation of religion and state was established to secure both the right of politics and the freedom of beliefs, political groups have either utilized or suppressed religions. Some politicians have also wrongly applied separation of religion and state by excluding religious aspects in public schools. Religionists and journalists of the religious newspapers should not provide one-sided prejudice but to provide objective information and its righteous analysis to guide people in the right direction to solve social problems. Also, religious newspapers should open a field of discussion how to resolve some issues between the 'national security law' and freedom.
Objectives: The mass media play a crucial role in risk communication regarding climate change. The aim of this study was to investigate the trend in journalistic reports on climate change in the daily newspapers of Korea. Methods: We selected 9 daily newspapers in Korea, which according to the ABC Association, represented 77% of newspaper circulation, out of a total of 44 Korean daily newspapers. The collected articles were from 2009 to 2011. All of the articles were sorted into the following 8 categories: greenhouse gas, climate change conventions, sea level rise, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change synthesis reports, expected damage and effect, use of fossil fuels, global warming, and mitigation or adaptation. A chi-squared test was done on the articles, which were counted and classified into cause, effect, and measurement of climate change according to the newspaper's majority or minority ownership structure. Results: From the 9 selected newspapers, the number of articles on climate change by month was greatest in December 2009. Generally, the articles vague about climate change (lack of precise data, negative or skeptical tone, and improper use of terminology) were much more common than the articles presenting accurate knowledge. A statistical difference was found based on ownership structure: the majority-owned newspapers addressed the cause of climate change, while the minority-owned newspapers referred more to climate change measurement. Conclusions: Our investigation revealed that generally Korean daily newspapers did not deliver accurate information about climate change. The coverage of the newspapers showed significant differences according to the ownership structure.
This study examined how newspapers covered the 60th anniversary of the historical event, 8 15 Independence Day. Specifically, five newspapers from three countries were content-analyzed to see differences, if any, based on country level and political ideology of the newspaper. The findings showed that Japanese newspapers yielded less amount of coverage than those of Korea and China. The newspapers of Korea and China used straight news format, while Japanese newspapers used opinion news format. In terms of information source, Korean newspapers and Chinese newspapers mainly relied on the information from the government, while Japanese newspapers took the information from citizen. The difference also revealed that Korean newspapers focused on domestic situation frame and the other countries more emphasized past memory of the War times. Consequently, the three countries showed clearly different perspectives on the same historical event. These distinctions were caused from national interest rather than political ideology of the newspaper.
Purpose: This study tried to understand discourses of life-sustaining treatments in general daily and healthcare newspapers. Methods: A text-network analysis was conducted using the NetMiner program. Firstly, 572 articles from 11 daily newspapers and 258 articles from 8 healthcare newspapers were collected, which were published from August 2013 to October 2016. Secondly, keywords (semantic morphemes) were extracted from the articles and rearranged by removing stop-words, refining similar words, excluding non-relevant words, and defining meaningful phrases. Finally, co-occurrence matrices of the keywords with a frequency of 30 times or higher were developed and statistical measures-indices of degree and betweenness centrality, ego-networks, and clustering-were obtained. Results: In the general daily and healthcare newspapers, the top eight core keywords were common: "patients," "death," "LST (life-sustaining treatments)," "hospice palliative care," "hospitals," "family," "opinion," and "withdrawal." There were also common subtopics shared by the general daily and healthcare newspapers: withdrawal of LST, hospice palliative care, National Bioethics Review Committee, and self-determination and proxy decision of patients and family. Additionally, the general daily newspapers included diverse social interest or events like well-dying, euthanasia, and the death of farmer Baek Nam-ki, whereas the healthcare newspapers discussed problems of the relevant laws, and insufficient infrastructure and low reimbursement for hospice-palliative care. Conclusion: The discourse that withdrawal of futile LST should be allowed according to the patient's will was consistent in the newspapers. Given that newspaper articles influence knowledge and attitudes of the public, RNs are recommended to participate actively in public communication on LST.
This study analyzed the reports of Korean and Chinese newspapers on the foundation of AIIB from the viewpoint of public diplomacy. The results showed that Chinese newspapers reported the government's statements and opinions and played as a means of conforming to the purposes of public diplomacy. Chinese newspapers employed the media paradigm of Instrumentalism among three paradigms of public diplomacy, which was due to ownership structure of the press. In the case of Korean Newspapers, they adopted paradigms of culturalism and professionalism. However, they verged to culturalism in terms of lack of discourse struggle due to few in-depth reports of the effects of national economy of AIIB.
This study is considered how to use newspapers to apply education by the way of analyses of environment coverage in newspapers. The environment coverage is mainly placed in social and regional magazines of newspapers, and the news story are mainly assigned to straight/feature magazines in type. The news of environment coverage is mostly gathered from data by government-informer, and the news is positive/agreement or negative/disagreement in tenor. The news gathering methods of planning/magazine newspaper serial are scientific and objective, and they are of the firsthand data by news reporter, contributions by experts and interviews. The spaces of the news are specially edited. The environment news is often negative/disagreeable in tenor because the news is mostly of straight ones written by non-experts. Applying newspapers in education is a useful learning method which students could develop thinking power and induce concerning and interest by themselves. From the results of the study, the useful suggestions to apply newspapers to learning are as follows. At first, spaces and types of news must be read in detail. Secondly, it is hopeful that indirect news by not writer himself might be possibly avoided in learning. Thirdly, the themes of news would be picked up in relation with learning contents. Lastly, it suggests that the tenor of news is neutral or, in cases, positive and negative together possibly.
Many studies analyzing local newspapers' crisis overlooked what a dominant determinant was. Local Newspaper promotion policy might not be effective due to lack of such studies. This study divided main determinants into four; centralization of administrative power, potential advertising market, potential subscribers market, and competition within local newspapers. The results regressing above four determinants on local news portion showed that only two determinants - potential advertising market and competition within local newspapers are statistically significant but the direction is opposite; potential ads market is negative but competition is positive. It can be understood that the market with enough ads market for survival of local newspapers drives them to compete national newspapers by lowering local news.
The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of discussion using newspapers on fifth grade elementary school students' academic achievement and affective characteristics related to science. Additionally, this study intended to examine students' ideas about newspaper utilization, discussion based learning and science with questionnaire. The subjects were 59 fifth grade students from two classes. NIE was used in the experimental group and traditional teaching methods in the control group. In pretest and posttest sessions, both groups were evaluated by the academic achievement test, and an affective characteristics related science test. The results of this study showed that the academic achievement of the experimental group which applied discussion using newspapers was significantly higher than that of the control group which applied traditional instruction, especially in terms of knowledge and understanding. Additionally, the results showed that discussion using newspapers had a positive effect on affective domains such as perception, interest and attendance for science classes. In particular, the post-results of the experimental group were higher than pre-results, on the other hand, those of the control group were lower than preresults in all affective domains. It appeared that students had positive thoughts about newspaper utilization, discussion based learning, and science. The half of students who had low academic achievement showed negative reactions for discussion based learning.
