Static Analysis of Frame Structures Using Transfer of Stiffness Coefficient (강성계수의 전달을 이용한 골조구조물의 정적해석)

  • In static analysis of a variety of structures, the matrix method of structural analysis is the most widely used and powerful analysis method. However, this method has drawback requiring high-performance computers with many memory units and fast processing units in the case of analyzing accurately structures with a large number of degrees-of- freedom. Therefore, it's very difficult to analyze these structures accurately in personal computers. For overcoming the drawback of the matrix method of structural analysis, authors suggest the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). The TSCM is very suitable to a personal computer because the concept of the TSCM is based on the transfer of the stiffness coefficient for an analytical structure. In this paper, the static analysis algorithm for frame structures is formulated by the TSCM. We confirm the validity of the TSCM through the comparison of computation results by the TSCM, the NASTRAN, the matrix method of structural analysis and the analytical solution.

Computational analysis and design formula development for the design of curved plates for ships and offshore structures

  • In general, cylindrically curved plates are used in ships and offshore structures such as wind towers, spa structures, fore and aft side shell plating, and bilge circle parts in merchant vessels. In a number of studies, it has been shown that curvature increases the buckling strength of a plate under compressive loading, and the ultimate load-carrying capacity is also expected to increase. In the present paper, a series of elastic and elastoplastic large deflection analyses were performed using the commercial finite element analysis program (MSC.NASTRAN/PATRAN) in order to clarify and examine the fundamental buckling and collapse behaviors of curved plates subjected to combined axial compression and lateral pressure. On the basis of the numerical results, the effects of curvature, the magnitude of the initial deflection, the slenderness ratio, and the aspect ratio on the characteristics of the buckling and collapse behavior of the curved plates are discussed. On the basis of the calculated results, the design formula was developed to predict the buckling and ultimate strengths of curved plates subjected to combined loads in an analytical manner. The buckling strength behaviors were simulated by performing elastic large deflection analyses. The newly developed formulations were applied in order to perform verification analyses for the curved plates by comparing the numerical results, and then, the usefulness of the proposed method was demonstrated.

Effects of Specimen Geometry on Stress Distribution in Sandwich Specimen Under Combined Loads (복합하중을 받는 샌드위치 시편의 응력분포에 미치는 시편 형상의 영향)

  • The effects of specimen geometry and loading conditions on the stress distribution in a sandwich specimen under combined loads are investigated by elastic finite element analysis. A commercial software NASTRAN is used in plain-strain two-dimensional finite element analysis of sandwich specimens; the analysis was performed for three different specimen shape factors and four different combined displacement conditions. The results of computational analysis suggest that the effect of the combined displacement angle, which is defined as the ratio of the shear displacement to the normal displacement, on the size of the non-homogeneous stress distribution is observed only in the case of the shear stress and von Mises stress. Also as the combined displacement angle increases, the size of the nonhomogeneous stress distribution decreases in the case of the shear stress and increases in the case of the von Mises stress. In addition, as the specimen shape factor, which is defined as the ratio of the specimen length to the height, increases, the size of the non-homogeneous stress distribution under combined displacement conditions decreases significantly.

  • According to the development of IT industry, prevalence of AOI equipment is spreading, and also requiring the high resolution of the camera used in the equipment. The weight of the camera is increased to obtain a high resolution, and thus increases the vibration displacement is a problem occurring in the picturing, camera motion control also becomes difficult. In this study, using a finite element analysis program NX/NASTRAN, the transient response of the camera was analysed which is subjected to an impact force due to inertia. The finite element analysis result is correlated with laser interferometer measurement. When AOI equipment is restructuring, the correlated finite element analysis model can be used to verify the authenticity of the new design.

  • Europe, the US and Japan have acquired test results on impact coefficient for a long time and applied it to equipment design to secure safety of structures. However, Korean enterprises use the impact factor held by advanced business to design equipment as it is difficult for them to obtain it through tests. In this paper, NX/NASTRAN, was used to perform static load analysis and impact load analysis of a PCB Handler, semiconductor test equipment, and the result was employed to study how to calculate the impact coefficient with the finite element analysis. The calculation method was applied to the JIS(Japanese Industrial Standard), and the impact coefficient of the PCB handler was calculated as 1.27 for the sudden start or stop. The impact coefficient generated by the analysis is expected to make a great contribution to the industry as it can be used to improve the equipment structure and develop on existing equipment in the future.

  • The failure load and mode of the unidirectional and fabric hybrid composite laminate joints are studied by test and finite element analysis. Test is conducted for the specimens with nine various geometries under pin loading. Finite element analysis is performed considering the contact and friction effects between the pin and laminate by MSC/NASTRAN. Failure is estimated by Tsai-Wu and Yamada-Sun criteria on the characteristic curve. While the failure of the specimens with the small width and edge length are much affected by the joint geometry, the geometry effects are negligible in the specimens with large width and edge length. Finite element analysis based on the characteristic length method reasonably predicts the failure load and mode of the joints.

  • The buckling and failure of filament wound thick composite cylinders under external hydrostatic pressure were investigated by the finite element analysis and test. ACOS, MSC.NASTRAN, and MSC.MARC were used for finite element analysis. T700 carbon-epoxy filament wound composite cylinders were fabricated to have winding angles of $[\pm30/90]_{FW}$, $[\pm45/90]_{FW}$, $[\pm60]_{FW}$, $[\pm60/90]_{FW}$, and tested to verify the finite element analysis. Among the softwares, ACOS predicted buckling load the best with about 1.7~14.3% deviation from test. Analysis and test shows cylinders do not recover the initial buckling pressure after buckling and directly lead to final failure.

Spectrum and Equivalent Transient Vibration Analysis of Small Composite Satellite Structure (소형 복합재위성의 스팩트럼 및 과도진동해석)

  • This paper is the study on random, sinusoidal and shock vibration responses for the STSAT-3(science and technology satellite-3) proto-model which is the first small size all-composite satellite in Korea. The structure system of the STSAT-3 forms box type structure by joining several hybrid sandwich panels comprised of honeycomb core and carbon fiber reinforced laminated composite skins on both side. Mode shape, stress, displacement and acceleration responses are obtained on both the frequency domain and time domain by means of a commercial FEA software MSC/NASTRAN. From these analysis results, failure, safety factor and design validity are assessed. These results can be successfully applicable as reference data when a new satellite is developed as well as giving out an excellent criteria in satellite vibration treatment design.

A Static Fluid-Structure Interaction Analysis System Based on the Navier-Stokes Equations for the Prediction of Aerodynamic Characteristics of Aircraft (항공기 공력특성 예측을 위한 Navier-Stokes 방정식 기반의 정적 유체-구조 연계 해석 시스템)

  • Recently there are growing interests in calculating aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft configurations with structural deformation using the FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) system in which CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) and CSD(Computational Structure Dynamics) modules are coupled. In this paper the FSI system comprised of CAD, CFD, CSD, VSI(Volume Spline Interpolation) and grid deformation modules was constructed in order to investigate aerodynamic characteristics of the deformed shape. In the process VSI and grid generation modules are developed to combine CSD and CFD routines and to regenerate the aerodynamic grids for the deformed shape, respectively. For the CFD and CSD analysis, commercial programs FLUENT and NASTRAN were used. As a test model, DLR-F4 wing configuration was chosen and its aerodynamic characteristics were calculated by applying the static FSI system. It was shown that lift and drag coefficients of the wing at mach number 0.75 are reduced to 20.26% and 18.5%, respectively, owing to the structural deformation.

Analysis of Ride Comfort for an Automobile with flexible Vehicle Body (차체의 유연성을 고려한 차량 승차감 해석)

  • In most researches on the ride comfort analysis of passenger vehicles, the flexibility of the vehicle body has been not considered as an important factor, because the resonance frequencies of the vehicle body related to pitching, yawing and rolling motions are below 10Hz while the resonance frequencies of the vehicle body related to the flexibility are above 20Hz approximately. Nevertheless, the paper shows that the consideration of the local flexibility (or local stiffness) of the 4 corners on which shock absorbers are mounted influences the ride comfort. A simple beam model is devised to qualitatively examine the effect of the change of the local stiffness of the vehicle body on the ride comfort. Based on the results obtained from the analysis of the one-dimensional model, multi-body dynamic analysis considering the flexibility of the vehicle body is performed using ADAMS and MSC/NASTRAN. Natural frequencies and mode shapes computed by MSC/NASTRAN are used as input data for multi-body dynamic analysis in ADAMS. Through simulations using ADAMS, it has been found that the ride comfort can be improved by changing the local stiffness of the vehicle body and that the simulation results agree with experiment results.
