  • PtRu alloy and $PtRu-WO_3$ nanocomposite thin-film electrodes for methanol electrooxidation were fabricated by means of a sputtering method. The structural and electrochemical properties of well-defined PtRu alloy thin-film electrodes were characterized using X-ray diffraction, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements. The alloy thin-film electrodes were classified as follows: Pt-based and Ru-based alloy structure. Based on structural and electrochemical understanding of the PtRu alloy thin-film electrodes, the well-controlled physical and (electro)chemical properties of $PtRu-WO_3$, showed superior specific current to that of a nanosized PtRu alloy catalyst, The homogeneous dispersion of alloy catalyst and well-formed nanophase structure would lead to an excellent catalytic electrode reaction for high-performance fuel cells. In addition, the enhanced catalytic activity in nanocomposite electrode was found to be closely related to proton transfer in tungsten oxide using in-situ electrochemical transmittance measurement.

  • Hexagonal GaN (h-GaN) films have been grown on Si(111) substrates by metal organic chemical vapor deposition using the azidodiethylgallium methylamine adduct, Et₂Ga(N₃)·NH₂Me, as a new single precursor. Deposition was carried out in the substrate temperature range 385-650 °C. The GaN films obtained were stoichiometric and did not contain any appreciable amounts of carbon impurities. It was also found that the GaN films deposited on Si(111) had the [0001] preferred orientation. The photoluminescence spectrum of a GaN film showed a band edge emission peak characteristic of h-GaN at 378 nm.

  • Under nanosecond-pulsed laser irradiation, light-absorbing thin films have been used for photoacoustic transmitters for ultrasound generation. Especially, nanostructured absorbers are attractive due to high optical absorption and efficient thermoacoustic energy conversion: for example, 2-dimensional (2-D) gold nanostructure array, synthetic gold nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and reduced graphene oxides. Among them, CNT has been used to fabricate a composite film with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) that exhibits excellent photoacoustic conversion performance for high-frequency, high-amplitude ultrasound generation. Previously, CNT-PDMS nanocomposite films were made by using a high-temperature chemical vapor deposition (HTCVD) process for CNT growth. However, this approach is not suitable to fabricate large-area CNT films (>several cm2). This is because a chamber dimension of HTCVD is limited and also the process often causes nonuniform CNT growth when the film area increases. As an alternative approach, a solution-based process can be used to overcome these issues. We develop PDMS composite transmitters, based on the solution process, using several nanostructured light-absorbers such as CNTs, nanoink powders, and imprinted regular arrays of gold nanostructure. We compare fabrication processes of each composite transmitters and photoacoustic output performance.

  • Recently, the control of size, morphology and dimensionality in inorganic materials has been rapidly developed into a promising field in materials chemistry. 3D nanostructured flower-like ZnO architecture with different size and shapes have been simply synthesized via a hydrothermal process, using zinc acetate and ammonium hydroxide as reactants.[1] In this study, the Zno thin-films were deposited by RF magnetron sputtering in other to get high adhesion and uniformity of 3D nanostructured flower-like ZnO architecture on a $SiO_2$ substrate. The XRD patterns identified that the obtained the nanocrystallized ZnO architecture exhibited a wurtzite structure. SEM images illustrated that the flower-like ZnO bundles consisted of flower-like or chestnut bur, which were characterized by polycrystalline and [0001] preferential orientation.

  • Nanostructured pure a-C and nitrogen doped a-C: N thin films with small particle size of, ~50 nm were obtained by Aerosol-assisted CVD method from the natural precursor camphor oil. Five samples were prepared for the a-C and a-C: N respectively, with the deposition temperatures ranging from $400^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. At high temperature, the AFM clarifies an even smoother image, due to the increase of the energetic carbon ion bombardment at the surface of the thin film. An ohmic contact was acquired from the current-voltage solar simulator characterization. The higher conductivity of a-C: N, of ${\sim}{\times}10^{-2}Scm^{-1}$ is due to the decrease in defects since the spin density gap decrease with the nitrogen addition. Pure a-C exhibit absorption coefficient, ${\alpha}$ of $10^4cm^{-1}$, whereas for a-C:N, ${\alpha}$ is of $10^5cm^{-1}$. The high ${\sigma}$ value of a-C:N is due to the presence of more graphitic component ($sp^2$ carbon bonding) in the carbon films.

  • Due to the high surface-to-volume ratio, the 3-dimensional(3D) nanostructures of metal oxides are regarded as the best candidate materials for the chemical gas sensors. Here we have synthesised flower-like 3D zinc oxide nanostructures through a simple hydrothermal route. Specific surface area of the 3D zinc oxide nanostructures synthesised in different pH values from 9.0 to 12.0 were evaluated by using a BET analyzer and the results were compared with that of a zinc oxide thin film fabricated by rf sputtering. Using interdigitated electrodes, superior CO gas sensing properties of the 3D zinc oxide nanostructures on the ZnO thin film to those of the ZnO thin film were demonstrated.

  • Plasma polymerized para-xylene (PPpX) thin films deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) were used to passivate the organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). For OLEDs, indium tin oxide (ITO), N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1'-diphenyl-4,4'-diamine (TPD), tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum $(Alq_{3})$ and aluminum (Al) were used as the anode, the hole transport layer (HTL), the emitting layer (EML) and the cathode, respectively. The OLED device with the PPpX passivation film (passivated device) showed similar electrical and optical characteristics to those of the OLED device without the PPpX passivation film (control device), indicating that the PECVD process did not degrade the performance of the OLEDs notably. The lifetime of the passivated device was two times longer than that of the control device. Passivation of OLEDs with PPpX films also suppressed the growth of dark spots. The density and size of dark spots of the passivated device were much smaller than those of the control device.

  • Magnetic CoW thin film alloys were electrodeposited from citrate baths to investigate the resulting microstructure and magnetic properties. Deposit tungsten (W) content in the films electrodeposited at $70^{\circ}C$ were independent of current density, while coercivity decreased from hard $(H_{c,//}\~150\;Oe\;and\;H_{c.{\bot}}\;\~240\;Oe)$ to soft magnetic properties $(H_{c,//}\~20\;Oe\;and\;H_{c.{\bot}}\;\~30\;Oe)$ with increasing current densities from $10\;to\;100mA{\cdot}cm^2$, with deposit W content $(\~40\%)$ relatively unaffected by the applied current density. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that hcp $Co_3W$ phases [(200), (201) and (220) planes] in the CoW films electrodeposited at $70^{\circ}C\;and\;10mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ were dominant, whereas amorphous CoW phases with small amount of hcp $Co_3W$ [(002) planes] were dominant with deposition at $70^{\circ}C\;and\;100mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$. At intermediate current densities $(25\;and\;50mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}),\;hop\;Co_3W$ phases [(200), (002), (201) and (220)] were observed. The average grain size was measured to be 30 nm from Sheller formula. It is suggested that the change of the deposit coercivities in the CoW thin films electrodeposited at $70^{\circ}C$ is attributed to the change of microstructures with varying the current density. Nanostructured $Co_3W/amorphous-CoW$ multilayers were fabricated by alternating current density between 10 and $100 mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$, varying the individual layer thickness. The magnetic properties of $Co_3W/amorphous-CoW$ multilayers were strongly dependent on the thickness of the alternating hard and soft magnetic thin films. The nanostructured $Co_3W/amorphous-CoW$ multilayers exhibited a shift from low to high coercivities suggesting a strong coupling effect.
