  • The term 'Piezoresistive effect' describes a change in the electrical resistance of the material from deformed to its original shape by the external pressure, e.g., elongation, compression, etc. This phenomenon has various applications of sensors for monitoring pressure, vibration, and acceleration. Although there are many materials which have the piezoresistive effect, rubber (nano)composites with conductive fillers have attracted a great deal of attention because the piezoresistive effect appears at the various range of pressure by controlling the type of filler, particle size, particle shape, aspect ratio of particles, and filler content. Especially one can obtain the composites with elasticity and flexibility by using the rubber as a matrix. This paper aims to review the piezoresistive effect itself, their basic principles, and the various conductive rubber-composites with piezoresistive effect.

  • The membrane-based CO2 capture is a fast-growing branch in gas separating field. Ionic liquid assisted mixed matrix membrane (MMM), which consists of organic fillers with dispersed ionic liquid, shows high potentiality as a candidate for CO2 separation medium. In MMM, various kinds of ionic liquid and inorganic filler are incorporated into polymer to enhance gas separating performance. Especially, the strong interaction between ionic liquid and organic filler gives huge influence on enhancing the separating performance by increasing affinity, selectivity and adsorption of CO2 into the framework. Also the mechanical properties of metal organic framework are positively tuned by input of ionic liquid to improve CO2 permeability and selectivity. In this review, study of various combinations of ionic liquid and metal organic framework (MOF) in the polymeric membrane for carbon dioxide separation is discussed.

  • The thermomechanical properties and morphologies of nanocomposite fibers of poly(ethylene terephthalate)(PET) incorporating thermally stable organoclays are compared. Dodecyltriphenyl-phosphonium-mica($C_{12}PPh-Mica$) and 1-hexadecane benzimidazole-mica ($C_{16}BIMD-Mica$) were used as reinforcing fillers in the fabrication of PET hybrid fibers. Dispersions of organoclays with PET were studied by using the in-situ polymerization method at various organoclay contents to produce nano-scale composites. The thermo-mechanical properties and morphologies of the PET hybrid fibers were determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), and a universal tensile machine (UTM). Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs show that some of the clay layers are dispersed homogeneously within the polymer matrix on the nano-scale, although some clay particles are agglomerated. We also found that the addition of only a small amount of organoclay is enough to improve the thermal stabilities and mechanical properties of the PET nanocomposite fibers. Even polymers with low organoclay content (<5 wt%) were found to exhibit much higher thermo-mechanical values than pure PET fibers.

  • Papermakers wish to increase the filler content of printing and writing grades because it allows saving in production cost through fiber replacement and improving the formation, and optical and printing properties of the paper. However, high filler loading in the base paper has negative side effects. It reduces the mechanical properties of paper and induces cracking at the fold after coating process. Fold cracking is one of the most frequent quality complaints for magazines, high quality books, etc. Two approaches were examined as methods to reduce fold cracking. One approach was to use preflocculated fillers, which was expected to reduce the fold cracking because it would decrease the interfiber bonding. The other approach was to use a new coating binder that gives greater binding power and thereby provides an opportunity of reducing the fold cracking of coated paper. When filler preflocculation was employed in producing the base paper, fold cracking becomes more severe than conventional filler loading condition. On the other hand, use of nano sized binder in coating improved the tensile properties of the coating layer and thereby decreased the crack area. It was shown that tensile properties of coating layer played an important role in fold cracking of coating.

  • In this work, the effect of chemical treatments of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) on the mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fiber fabric-reinforced composites was investigated. The surface properties of the MWNTs were determined by acid and base values, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were assessed by interlaminar shear stress (ILSS) and critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). The chemical treatments based on acid and base reactions led to a significant change of surface characteristics of the MWNTs, especially A-MWNTs/carbon fibers/epoxy composites had higher mechanical properties than those of B-MWNTs and non-treated MWNTs/carbon fibers/epoxy composites. These results were probably due to the improvement of interfacial bonding strength, resulting from the acid-base interaction and hydrogen bonding between the epoxy resins and the MWNT fillers.

  • Improvement of heat sink technology related to the continuous implementation performance and extension of device-life in circumstance of easy heating and more compact space has been becoming more important issue as multi-functional integration and miniaturization trend of electronic gadgets and products has been generalized. In this study, it purposed to minimize of decline of the heat diffusivity by gluing polymer through compounding of inorganic particles which have thermal conductive properties. We used NH-9300 as base resin and used inorganic fillers such as silicon carbide(SiC), aluminum nitride(AlN), and boron nitride(BN) to improve heat diffusivity. After making film which was made from 100 part of acrylic resin mixed hardener(1.0 part more or less) with inorganic particles. The film was matured at $80^{\circ}C$ for 24h. Diffusivity were tested according to sorts of particles and density of particles as well as size and structure of particle to improve the effect of heat sink in view of morphology assessing diffusivity by LFA(Netzsch/LFA 447 Nano Flash) and adhesion strength by UTM(Universal Testing Machine). The correlation between diffusivity of pure inorganic particles and composite as well as the relation between density and morphology of inorganic particles has been studied. The study related morphology showed that globular type had superior diffusivity at low density of 25% but on the contarary globular type was inferior to non-globular type at high density of 80%.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are considered as one of ideal nano-fillers in the field of composites with their excellent electrical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Therefore CNT composites are increasingly used in fabricating conductive materials, structural materials with high strength and low weight, and multifunctional materials. The main problem of the CNT composites is difficulty in the dispersion of CNT in the polymer matrix. In this study multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) were pretreated by the physical process utilizing a wrapping method. After the pretreatment polymer/MWNT nanocomposites were prepared by melt processing. The effect of functionalization MWNT by wrapping with styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) on the mechanical and electrical properties of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene resin (ABS)/MWNT composites was studied by comparing the properties of ABS mixed with the neat MWNT. Electrical and mechanical properties of ABS/MWNT nanocomposites were studied as a function of the functionalization and content of MWNT. The tensile strength of the ABS/MWNT nanocomposites increased, but the impact strength decreased. The polymer wrapping in ABS system has little effect on the improvement of electrical properties.

  • The particulate type silicon carbide (SiC) and fiber type carbon fiber (CF) filler, of similar thermal conductivities, were mixed with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) to investigate the filler effects on the thermal diffusivity. The SiC and CF fillers had a good and uniform dispersion in PEEK matrix. Thermal diffusivities of PEEK composites were measured from ambient temperature up to $200^{\circ}C$ by laser flash method. The diffusivities were decreased as increasing temperature due to the phonon scattering between PEEK-filler and filler-filler interfaces. Thermal diffusivity of PEEK composites was increased with increasing filler content and the thermal conductivities of two-phase system were compared to the experimental results and it gave ideas on the filler dispersion, orientation, aspect ratio, and filler-filler interactions. Nielson equation gave a good prediction to the experimental results of PEEK/SiC. The easy network formation by CF was found to be substantially more effective than SiC and it gave a higher thermal diffusivities of PEEK/CF than PEEK/SiC.

  • In the field of designing of nano-fillers of polyimide nanocomposites, the two strategic points are the heat-resistance and compatibility with polyimide, a matrix polymer. In this study, we designed oligo(amic acid) having alkyl side chains and terminal amine groups to satisfy previous requirements and studied the modification of surface of layered silicates. Oligo(amic acid)s were prepared by the reaction of diamine monomers and PMDA and their molecular weight was controlled in about 2000g/mol. After that, acidification and ion exchange reaction led to the high-temperature organophilic layered silicate (OLS). XRD pauerns of OLS showed the more increased gallery spacing by $4{\AA}$ than that of the pristine layered silicate and the initial decomposition temperatures of OLS were in above $280^{\circ}C$. The polyimide nanocomposite films based on heat resistant OLS showed that the OLSs were well dispersed through the matrix and their CTEs showed a decrease of $26\%$ compared with pristine polyimide films.

  • Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown promise in various applications, including molecular separation, dye separation, gas separation, filtration, and desalination. Integrating COFs into membranes enhances permeability, selectivity, and stability, improving separation processes. Combining COFs with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) creates nanocomposite membranes with high permeability and stability, ideal for dye separation. Incorporating COFs into polyamide (PA) membranes improves permeability and selectivity through a synthetic interfacial strategy. Three-dimensional COF fillers in mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) enhance CO2/CH4 separation, making them suitable for biogas upgrading. All-nanoporous composite (ANC) membranes, which combine COFs and metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes, overcome permeance-selectivity trade-offs, significantly improving gas permeance. Computational simulations using hypothetical COFs (hypoCOFs) demonstrate superior CO2 selectivity and working capacity relevant for CO2 separation and H2 purification. COFs integrated into thin-film composite (TFC) and polysulfonamide (PSA) membranes enhance rejection performance for organic contaminants, salt contaminants, and heavy metal ions, improving separation capabilities. TpPa-SO3H/PAN covalent organic framework membranes (COFMs) exhibited superior desalination performance compared to traditional polyamide membranes by utilizing charged groups to enable efficient desalination through electrostatic repulsion, suggesting their potential for ionic and molecular separations. These findings highlight COFs' potential in membrane technology for enhanced separation processes by improving permeability, selectivity, and stability. In this review, COF applied for the separation process is discussed.
