  • The extracting conditions of alginates from sea tangle were evaluated by measuring water vapor permeability (WVP) and tensile properties of alginate film to obtain basic data of making an edible and biodegradable film. The alginates were extracted with $1\%,\;3\%$ and $5\%$ sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) for 1, 3, 5 and 10 hours, and the alginate film was made with various plasticizers. The higher concentration of $Na_2CO_3$ solution showed the lower viscosity and polymerization degree of alginate and the film prepared with alginates having low viscosity showed the higher WVP. The extracting hours had little effect on the WVP and the elongation of alginate film, but the polymerization degree of alginates directly affected the tensile strength of the film. The addition of sorbitol and polyethylene glycol as a plasticizer lowered the WVPs and the elongation of alginate film.

  • The processing conditions for producing and edible alginate film from sea tangle were investigated by measuring water vapor permeability (WVP), tensile properties and colors of film. The alginates were extracted with $3\%$ sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) solution for 5 hrs, and the alginate films were prepared with extracted sodium alginates, D-gluconic acid lactone, $CaCO_3$ and various plasticizers, As the concentration of alginate in making the film was increased, the WVP and elongation of the film were decreased and the tensile strength was increased. The higher amount of plasticizer showed the higher WVP and elongation, and the order of various plasticizers in increasing the WVP and elongation of the film was glycerol, polyethylene glycol, and sorbitol. The addition of sorbitol in the film showed the highest value (89.57) in lightness of Hunter color system and the film added polyethylene glycol had the highest values (-1,12 and 11.4) in redness and yellowness.

  • The effects of alginate extracting conditions from sea tangle and the effects of film preparation conditions on the physical properties of the alginate film were investigated by measuring ester compounds permeability. The higher concentration of sodium carbonate solution as extracting solvent made the higher ethyl acetate permeability of alginate film, but extracting time showed little efficacy of alginate film permeability. The higher concentration of sorbitol as a plasticizer showed higher ethyl acetate permeability of alginate film, Adding various plasticizers, the ethyl acetate permeability of algiante films was increased in order as follow : sorbitol, glycerol and polyethylene glycol. Ester compounds haying the lower molecular weight showed the higher permeability. And the higher temperature made the ethyl acetate permeability of algiante film to be high.

  • To improve water-resistance and physical properties of sodium alginate film, effects of sodium alginate and plasticizer concentrations, divalent cation types and concentrations, and immersion time of films into divalent cation solutions on sodium alginate films were evaluated, based on elongation strength (ES), elongation rate (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS). Film made from 1.5% sodium alginate solution (w/w) had low WVP and WS, which are optimal characteristics for application of film preparation. Addition of plasticizer increased E and WS. Less than 2% $CaCl_2$ addition and 15min immersion time reduced WVP, WS, and E significantly (p<0.05). Sodium alginate films treated with $CuCl_2$, and $ZnCl_2$ solutions had lower WVP and WS, whereas $MgCl_2$ had no influence on improving water resistance of films.

  • Effect of direct addition of $CaCl_2$ into sodium alginate film-making solution and immersion of alginate films into $CaCl_2$ solutions on tensile strength (TS), percentage elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), and water solubility (WS) of the films were investigated. TS of alginate films prepared by both methods increased. E of $CaCl_2-added$ films did not change significantly (P>0.05), whereas that of $CaCl_2-immersion$ films decreased significantly (p<0.05). WVP of films prepared by both methods decreased significantly, but the effect was more significant in the $CaCl_2-immersion$ films. Water resistance was not changed in the $CaCl_2-added$ films, whreras increased significantly in $CaCl_2-immersion$ films (p<0.05). Properties of alginate films depend on the concentration of $CaCl_2$ treatments in both methods, and they also depend on treatment time in the immersion method.

  • Preparation of antibacterial biopolymer film which is suitable for food packaging film was investigated using K-carrageenan as a base material. K-Carrageenan showed good biodegradability and film-forming characteristic but poor mechanical properties under humid condition. Also, various bacteria grew well on its surface. The poor mechanical properties could be improved by mixing with alginate at a 1:1 ratio and crosslinking with $CaCl_2$ solution. Antibacterial property coul be provided by modifying the K-carrageenan film surface with acrylic acid plasma followed by ion-exchange with $Ag^+$ ions. Such prepared film still showed good biodegradability by various fongi.

  • Increase in water vapor barrier properties of sodium alginate films was studied by preparing composite films with fatty acids, i.e., lauric, palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids, and by treatment with 3% $CaCl_{2}$ solution for 3 min. Film thickness, surface color, microstructure, tensile strength (TS), elongation at break (E), water vapor permeability (WVP), water solubility (WS), and sorption isotherm of films were investigated. Microstructure of films observed with SEM was changed by fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. TS decreased 25-70% depending on fatty acid used, and increased 1.5- to 2-fold by $CaCl_{2}$ treatment. E decreased by both fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. Except oleic acid, WVP decreased significantly (p<0.05) by forming composite films with fatty acids, particularly with stearic acid, WVP decreased more than two-fold. WS also decreased by fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$ treatments. In stearic acid, WS decreased about 30-fold by combined treatment of fatty acid and $CaCl_{2}$. Sorption isotherm showed typical biphasic pattern with deliquescent point of 0.75. Results of isotherms and BET monolayer moisture content indicated hydrophilicity of film decreased by $CaCl_{2}$ treatment.
