  • In this study, styrene butadiene rubber(SBR)/organoclay nanocomposites were manufactured using the latex method with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane(APTES) as a modifier. The X-ray diffraction(XRD), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) images, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy, swelling ratio and mechanical properties were measured in order to study the interaction between filler and rubber according to the mixing temperature in the internal mixer. In the case of SBR/APTES-MMT compounds, the dispersion of the silicates within the rubber matrix was enhanced, and thereby, the mechanical properties were improved. The characteristic bands of Si-O-C in APTES disappeared after hydrolysis reaction in the MMT-suspension solution and the peak of hydroxyl group was increased. Therefore the formation of chemical bonds between the hydroxyl group generated from APTES on the silicate surface and the ethoxy group of bis(triethoxysilylpropyl) tetrasulfide(TESPT) was possible. Consequently, the 300% modulus of SBR/APTES-MMT compounds was further improved in the case of using TESPT as a coupling agent. However, the silanization reaction between APTES and TESPT was not affected significantly according to the increase of mixing temperature in the internal mixer.

  • IIn vitro antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities of nargenicin and its derivatives were investigated. Nargenicin, an unusual macrolide antibiotic with potent anti-MRSA (methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) activity, was purified from the culture broth of Nocardia sp. CS682. And variety of novel nargenicin derivatives was synthesized from nargenicin. Two compounds (4 and 5) exhibit a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activities against infectious bacteria. The antimicrobial activity of derivatives against fifteen organisms was assessed using the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The MIC values were in the ranges of $0.15{\sim}80{\mu}g/mL$ (w/v) for compound 1 and 2, $5{\sim}80{\mu}g/mL$ (w/v) for compound 3, $1.25{\sim}40{\mu}g/mL$ (w/v) for compound 4, and $1.25{\sim}80{\mu}g/mL$ (w/v) for compound 5, depending on the pathogens studied. In vitro, we investigated cytotoxicity and inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production of synthesized compounds 1-5 in Raw 264.7 cells. LPS-induced nitric oxide releases were significantly blocked by compound 3, 4 and 5 in a dose-dependent manner. At high concentrations ($5{\mu}g/mL$) compound 5 inhibited the NO production by 95%. Compound 4 inhibited the release of NO in LPS-activated Raw 264.7 cells by 75% at the concentration of $10{\mu}g/mL$. Compound 3 inhibited the release of NO in LPS-activated Raw 264.7 cells by 65% at the concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. On the other hand, nargenicin, compound 1 and 2 did not inhibit NO production. These results demonstrated that compound 4 and 5 displayed antimicrobial activity and blocked LPS-induced pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO in macrophages, which might be responsible for its therapeutic application.

  • Onion has been reported to contain various organosulfur compounds which have antibiotic and anticarcinogenic properties and flavonoid like quercetin which is a valuable natural source of antioxidants. Carbohydrates in onion constitute about 80% of dry matter, and the major non-structural carbohydrate of onion bulb is fructo-oligosaccharides, well known as fructan, followed by glucose, fructose, and sucrose. The sugar concentration is associated with dormancy and storage life of onion, occurring as decrease in glucose, fructose and fructan, particularly towards the end of storage. Forced air pre-drying for 15-20 days at room temperature is an essential procedure to reduce freezing injury and sprouting, then onion bulbs can be stored at $0^{\circ}C$ for 6 months to control sprouting and decay. Bacterial soft rot caused by $Erwinia$ and $Pseudomonas$ is the main postharvest disease when the bulbs are infected with the bacteria and stored at room temperature. Browning in sliced onion is due to oxidation of phenolic compounds by polyphenol oxidase and it can be inhibited by citric acid treatment, packing with nitrogen gas, and polyethylene film.

  • In this study Anti-inflammatory activity was investigated for the extract of Prunus pendula for. ascendens (Makino) Ohwi by monitoring nitric oxide (NO) production in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells. The P. pendula ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction showed to decrease the NO synthesis by 76.3% at $100{\mu}g/mL$ concentration. The inhibition occurred in a dose-dependent manner without causing cell toxicity. The EtOAc fraction also inhibited the production of $PGE_2$, $IL-1{\beta}$, IL-6 and expression of iNOS, COX-2 protein in dose-dependent manner. From the phytochemical study to isolate the active constituents, five known compounds were identified, which are ursolic acid (1), prunasin (2), methyl p-coumarate (3), kaempferol (4), astragalin (5). All of the compounds 1 - 5 were isolated for the first time from the P. pendula. Among the isolates, the flavonoids 4 and 5 were verified to inhibit NO production with high efficiency. These results suggested that extract of P. pendula leaves could be useful as anti-inflammatory agents in pharmaceutical or cosmetic applications.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to survey the currently available fluoride-containing oral hygiene products in Korea to provide consumers with information regarding the concentration and form of fluoride in each product, as well as to determine whether the information was easy to understand. Methods: A total of 64 types of domestic commercial oral hygiene products were purchased from an offline market and evaluated. Results: The domestic commercial toothpaste products contained fluoride in the form of sodium fluoride (NaF) and sodium monofluorophosphate (SMFP). In this study, toothpaste containing 1,000 ppm fluoride compounds accounted for the largest proportion (61.5%). Toothpastes containing below 1,000 ppm fluoride accounted for 34.6%, while toothpastes with fluoride above 1,000 ppm fluoride accounted for 3.9%. Toothpaste containing more than 1,000 ppm fluoride has not been popularized domestically. Mouthwash products contained fluoride compounds at less than 300 ppm concentration. Of the five types of mouthwash products, only two types had labels indicating fluoride concentration. In addition, the location of the labels indicating fluoride concentration differed between manufacturers and even within the same manufacturer. Conclusions: It is important to popularize toothpaste with fluoride levels above 1,000 ppm so that a broader selection of toothpaste can be offered to consumers in need. Standardized information needs to be provided for consumer convenience to aid in choosing appropriate oral hygiene products.

Crude protein, lipid and carbohydrate for C. ellipsoidea were $43.15\%$, $12.63\%$ and $13.09\%$, respectively, and those for T. suecica were $44.95\%$, $4.80\%$ and $24.05\%$, respectively. The major amino acids of the two micro algae were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, alanine, valine, leucine, lysine and proline, and no significant difference between the amino acid compositions of both micro algae was observed. The major sugars for both microalgae were glucose, galactose and mannose, and glucose contents showed the highest level, $58.70\%$ for C. ellipsoidea and$57.86\%$ for T. suecica. The major mineral contents of both micro algae for 100g were Ca (3,114mg in C. ellipoidea and 3,389mg in T. suecica) and followed by Na (2,881mg), K (548mg) and Mg (545mg) for C. ellipsoidea and Na (1,832 mg), Mg (1,510mg) and K (548mg) for T. suecica. In the content of ATP-related compound, hypoxanthine in C. ellipsoidea and IMP in T. suecica were absolutely dominant compounds. The highest content of fatty acid in C. ellipsoidea was 20:4, $27.15\%$ and that in T. suecica was 18:3 (w-6), $18.10\%$. In case of physiologically important polyunsaturated fatty acids like eicosapentaenoic acid (20: 5) and docosahexaenoic acid (22: 6), both microalgae possessed just trace amounts but was rich in arachidonic acid (20: 4). Vitamin content in both microalgae was significantly high in choline and inositol. In antimicrobial activity by water- and fat-soluble fraction of the micro algae, hexane extract in the fat-soluble fraction of C. elliposidea inhibited the growth of Bacillus subtilis by $96\%$ bactericidal activity and tetrachlorocarbon extract of T. suecica indicated relatively excellent antimicrobial activity $(81\%\;bactericidal\;activity)$ against Escherichia coli. Hot water extract among water-soluble fraction of both micro algae almost suppressed the growth of Staphylococcus aureus by $96\%$ bactericidal activity.

  • In the present study, isothermal stabilization processes for rayon fabrics were performed at two relatively low temperatures $180^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ for a long period of time. The results of weight loss, dimensional shrinkage, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic observations studied with the rayon fabrics before and after the isothermal stabilization indicated that the chemical and physical changes of rayon precursor fibers proceeded continuously and slowly at the stabilization temperature below $200^{\circ}C$. And the pre-treatment with four different chemical compounds done prior to stabilization process influenced differently the characteristics of rayon fabrics. As a result, it was noticed that under the given stabilization conditions, $H_3PO_4$ and $Na_3PO_4$ played a role in catalyzing the stabilization reaction of rayon fabric whereas $NH_4Cl$ and $ZnCl_2$ played a role in delaying or retarding the reaction. $H_3PO_4$ showed the lowest percent weight loss of the fabric in the second stabilization conducted at $350^{\circ}C$. It was considered that phosphoric acid, which has a function of flame retardant, contributed to retarding somewhat the subsequent reaction even in the second stabilization step.

  • Inconel 713C which of a commercial Ni super alloy have the composition of 70 % Ni, 12 % Cr, 6 % Al and 4 % Mo. Mo is very expensive and have some economic value to recover in the alloy. In this study, liquid-liquid exraction(solvent extraction and stripping) has been performed to separate Mo from the synthetic leaching solution of spent Inconel 713C alloy and prepare to Mo powder by dying, evaporation and heat treatment. The experiments were conducted by using synthetic leaching solution which was prepared $NaMoO_4$ $2H_2O$ by dissolved in distilled water. Alamine336 and Cyanex272 dissolved in kerosene were used as extractants. The extraction percentage of Mo by Alamine336 is 99 % in the condition of the range of pH 1 to 4 and 1 % of concentration of Alamine336. The stripping solutions are used by HCl, $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$ solutions and the concentrations were controlled by distilled water. The concentrations of HCl, $H_2SO_4$ and $HNO_3$ as stripping solutions are increased, the stripping percentages of Mo are increased and the stripping percentage of Mo by $HNO_3$ is higher than other stripping solutions. After liquid-liquid extraction and heat treatment, $MoO_3$ powder which of the purity of 97.5 % was prepared.

  • The purpose of this study was to characterize the coffee ground and its possibility to develop the antifungal activity. pH, EC, and Zn contents of the coffee ground from coffee shops were higher than those of commercial coffee ground, but there was no significant difference in $K_2O$, CaO, MgO, $Na_2O$, Mn contents. The antimicrobial activity of the water soluble extracts from the coffee shop and the commercial coffee ground were tested for six major plant pathogens, Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Fusarium oxysporum, Phytophthora capsici, Alternaria alternata, and Botrytis cinerea. The result showed that there was reliable antifungal activity against all of tested plant pathogenic fungi. The inhibition effects of coffee ground compost extract on the spore germination and zoospore formation were investigated. Water soluble extracts of the coffee ground compost mixture added with 10% sesame oil cake were significantly inhibited the growth of conidia germination of A. altanata and zoospore formation of P. capsici in vitro. For investigating the functional materials of coffee ground compost, it was measured the total polyphenolic compounds contents with 30 days interval during decomposing coffee ground for 90 days. The total polyphenolic content increased with decomposing periods, and it observed that the highest total polyphenolic content was $0.35{\pm}0.03mg\;GAE/g$ on the 90th day in the coffee ground compost added with 10% sesame oil cake.
