  • This study was conducted from March to August 1997 to decide the size of plant community in fragmentary habitats. The thirty one sites and one hundred and eighteen plots were plotted in the areas including Yangpyong, Yoju, Pyongtaek and Ansong in Kyonggi-do, Chomchon and Sangju in Kyongsangbuk-do, Nonsan in Chungchongnam-do and Iksan in Chollapuk-do. The area and number of woody species by correlation analysis were recorded as the highest value as 0.716. In order to apply the theory of island biogeography to the fragmented habitats in Korea, the four variables were calculated by regression model. The four variables such as number of woody species, number of woody individuals, number of herbaceous species and number of herbaceous individuals were recorded as significant with area at the level of 0.05 and R square was 0.71. The one function was selected between number of species and number of individuals from the canonical correlation analysis, and the function square was 0.8876. Both canonical function and squared canonical correlation showed significant at the level of 0.01. The number of species and individuals were not increased from the condition that was the size of plant community of 400$m^2$, 30 for number of species and 4,000 for number of individuals. This results of this study can be widely used as a basic information for the conservation management, especially the fragmented ecosystems or the biotop creation in the landscaping.

  • Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between depression and number of present teeth in Korean elderly individuals. Methods: Data for this cross-sectional survey was obtained from the records of the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The subjects were 1,199 Korean elderly individuals above 65 years of age. The survey and examination data were used for the independent variables. The KNHANES included health status, nutrition survey, and oral examination. $x^2-test$ was performed to identify the characteristics of depression and number of teeth present according to the characteristics of the study subjects. Logistic regression analysis was also performed to identify the relationship between depression and number of teeth present. The statistical significance level wa sset at 0.05. Results: The prevalence of depression in the subjects was 14.8%. There were statistically significant differences in the prevalence of depression, depending on gender (p<0.001), education level (p=0.001), income (p=0.001), spouse status (p<0.001), and alcohol consumption (p=0.020). The association between depression and the number of teeth present showed statistically significant difference after adjustment (p=0.040). Conclusions: Depression in elderly individuals was closely related to the number of teeth present. Therefore, public health policies for improving oral health should be established to prevent depression.

  • The results of a week-long exploration, which was conducted on the soil mite of Mt. Paektu area by our team of the Ecological Society of Korea from July 22nd till July 27th of 1997, are as follows. All mite were picked and examined from the soil of 2,000 cm$^{2}$ from eight respective zones. The total number collected was 384 individuals with 20 families, 33 genera, 38 species including 42 individuals of unknown species. They were classified and identified as 13 families 18 genera 22 species of Oribatei, 4 families 11 genera 12 species of Mesostigmata, 2 families 3 genera 3 species of Prostigmata. Among them 5 species of Laelaptidae, Ascidae and Uropodidae couldn't be classified and identified owing to the shortage of reference. in alphine tundra zone 91 individuals were found, which outnumbered than that of the other surveyed areas. The mite that existed evenly in all around the surveyed areas was Tectocepheus sp. and 32 individuals of them were collected from the virgin forest zone. A comparatively small number of mite was found from sungsaha and the intersection of three streets in Mt. Paektu and Songkangjin town, which accoumts for soil picking from unsuitable places.

  • The small-scale dynamic of moth populations in spring was examined in a coniferous forest of southwestern Korea. Moths were collected with one 22-watt light trap for 29 days in April 2007. A total of 450 individuals of 38 species in 5 families were collected. The most abundant species was an epiplemid moth, Epiplema plagifera. The relationship between these dominant moths and their host plants is briefly discussed. We also examined influence of weather factors on the number of species and individuals collected. Multiple regression analyses showed that the two-day temperature difference explained 18% of the variance in the number of species collected, while air and ground temperatures explained 51% of the variance in the log-transformed number of individuals collected. This suggests that temperature affects local population sizes in spring, but variables other than weather may also affect the diversity of local moth populations.

  • The distribution of seabirds was investigated in 24-34 major coastal wetlands in Korea from 2015 to 2019. During the study period, seven orders, 16 families, and 111 species were observed, and the largest number of species (51-89 species) was recorded in 2018. 92,821-265,783 individuals per year were observed with the largest number in 2018. The largest number of species (55-72 species) was observed in the southern sites of Jeollado, and the largest number of individuals (annual average of 62,542 individuals) was found in Chungcheong regions. The largest number of seabird species (68 species) was observed at the Suncheon Bay site in 2016, and the largest number of individuals (95,399 individuals) was observed at Biin and Jangan sites in 2018. In terms of the habitat type of seabirds, at the family level, shorebirds appeared most frequently with an average of 38%, followed by waterfowl, wading birds, seabirds, and raptors. With regard to legally protected species, eight protected marine species, 19 endangered wildlife species (Level I: six species, Level II: 13 species), and twelve natural monument species were observed. Overall, there was a significant difference in the number of species and individuals of seabirds in the Korean coastal wetlands during the research period. This suggests the importance of conducting systematic and continuous seabird surveys and developing a conservation policy considering habitat characteristics.

  • Monthly fish samples were collected using bottom gill nets and analyzed to study species composition and seasonal variation of fish assemblages in the coastal waters off Gadeok-do, Korea in 1998. During the study period, a total of 49 fish species representing 30 families were collected. The fish assemblages predominantly consisted of Limanda yokohamae, which accounted for $53.3\%$ of the number of individuals and $42.2\%$ in the biomass. The fish species, which had over 100 individuals, included Cynoglossus abbreviatus, Ditrema temmincki, Hexagrammos otakii, and Stephanolepis cirrhifer. These four species accounted for $24.1\%$ of the number of individuals and $24.3\%$ of the biomass. More fish species were collected in May and June than in any other months. The number of individuals and the amount of biomass peaked in April and May and reached a low in August. While the predominance of L. yokohamae caused the lowest species diversity by number of individuals in April, the predominance of Platycephalus indicus caused the lowest species diversity by biomass in July. Although gill nets show a strong selectivity for the target species or for size, gill nets can be used as an alternative fishing gear to collect fish in waters with rough bottoms, like rocky reefs, where other kinds of fishing gear such as trawls can not be used.
