  • In this letter, a wireless communication system with microdiversity and macrodiversity reception in gamma-shadowed Rician fading channels is considered. Exact and rapidly converging infinite-series expressions for the average level crossing rate and average fade duration at the output of the system are provided. Numerical results are presented graphically to illustrate the proposed mathematical analysis and to examine the effects of the system's parameters on the quantities considered.

  • Several code-division multiple access (CDMA)-based interconnect schemes have been recently proposed as alternatives to the conventional time-division multiplexing bus in multicore systems-on-chip. CDMA systems with a dynamic assignment of spreading codewords are particularly attractive because of their potential for higher bandwidth efficiency compared with the systems in which the codewords are statically assigned to processing elements. In this paper, we propose a novel distributed arbitration scheme for dynamic CDMA-bus-based systems, which solves the complexity and scalability issues associated with commonly used centralized arbitration schemes. The proposed arbitration unit is decomposed into multiple simple arbitration elements, which are connected in a ring. The arbitration ring implements a token-passing algorithm, which both resolves destination conflicts and assigns the codewords to processing elements. Simulation results show that the throughput reduction in an optimally configured dynamic CDMA bus due to arbitration-related overheads does not exceed 5%.

  • The non-ionic surfactant (NIS) Tween 80 was evaluated for its ability to influence invitro cumulative gas production, dry matter digestibility, cellulolytic enzyme activities, anaerobic microbial growth rates, and adhesion to substrates by mixed rumen microorganisms on rice straw, alfalfa hay, cellulose filter paper and tall fescue hay. The addition of NIS Tween 80 at a level of 0.05% increased significantly (P<0.05) in vitro DM digestibility, cumulative gas production, microbial growth rate and cellulolytic enzyme activity from all of substrates used in this study. In vitro cumulative gas production from the NIS-treated substrates; rice straw, alfalfa hay, filter paper and tall fescue hay was significantly (P<0.05) improved by 274.8, 235.2, 231.1 and 719.5% compared with the control, when substrates were incubated for 48 hr in vitro. The addition of 0.05% NIS Tween 80 to cultures growing on alfalfa hay resulted in a significant increase in CMCase (38.1%), xylanase (121.4%), Avicelase (not changed) and amylase (38.2%) activities after 36 h incubation. These results indicated that the addition of 0.05% Tween 80 could greatly stimulate the release of some kinds of cellulolytic enzymes without decreasing cell growth rate in contrast to trends reported with aerobic microorganism. Our SEM observation showed that NIS Tween. 80 did not influence the microbial adhesion to substrates used in the study. Present data clearly show that improved gas production, DM digestibility and cellulolytic enzyme activity by Tween 80 is not due to increased bacterial adhesion on the substrates.

  • As data on the Web is more and more in XML due to proliferation of Web applications such as e-Commerce, it is strongly required to rapidly process XML queries. One of such techniques is XML query caching. For frequently submitted queries, their results could be cached in order to guarantee fast response for the same queries. In this paper, we propose techniques for XML query performance improvement whereby the set of node identifiers(NIS) for an XML query is cached. NIS is most commonly employed as a format of XML query result,, consisting of the identifiers of the XML elements that comprise the query result. With NIS, it is suitable to meet the Web applications data retrieval requirements because reconstruction and/or modification of query results and integration of multiple query results can be efficiently done. Incremental refresh of NIS against its source updates can also be efficiently done. When the query result is requested in XML, however, materialization of NIS is needed by retrieving the source XML elements through their identifiers. In this paper, we consider three different types of NISs. proposing the algorithms of their creation, materialization, and incremental refresh. All of them were implemented using an RDBMS. Through a detailed set of performance experiments, we showed the efficiency of the proposed XML query caching techniques.

  • In this paper we develop algorithms in programming lan-guage SCHEME for implementation of the main first order gradient techniques for unconstrained optimization. Implementation of the de-scent techniques which use non-optimal descent steps as well as imple-mentation of the optimal descent techniques are described. Also we investigate implementation of the global problem called optimization along a line. Developed programs are effective and simpler with re-spect to the corresponding in the procedural programming languages. Several numerical examples are reported.

  • $\beta-D-Mannopyranosyl$ disaccharides have been obtained from the coupling of 4,6-O-benzylidene derivatives of ethylthio $\alpha-D-mannopyranoside$ employing NIS-TfOH promoter. NIS-TfOH promoted couplings of the corresponding ethylthio $\beta-D-glucopyranoside$ and produced $\alpha-D-glucopyranosyl$ disaccharides. IDCP (iodonium dicollidine perchlorate) was inactive toward the 4,6-O-benzylidenated ethylthio glucopyranosyl donor. However,lDCP coupled the 4,6-O-benzylidenated $ethylthio-\beta-D-galactopyranoside$ to give a-D-galactopyranosyl disaccharides.

  • Bacteriocin-producing lactic acid bacteria were isolated from kimchi. One isolate producing the most efficient bacteriocin was identified and named Lactococcus lactis B2, based on the biochemical properties and 16S rDNA sequences. The B2 bacteriocin inhibited many different Gram positive bacteria including Lactococcus, Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, and Staphylococcus, but did not inhibit Gram-negative bacteria. The bacteriocin was maximally produced at temperatures between $25^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C$ and at the initial pH of 7.0. Ninety $\%$ of the activity remained after 10 min of heat treatment at $121^{\circ}C,\;and\;100\%$, after 1 h exposure to organic solvents. The bacteriocin was purified from culture supernatant by ammonium sulfate precipitation, CM Sepharose column chromatography, ultrafiltration, and finally, by reverse-phase HPLC. A 1.58-kb fragment was amplified from B2 chromosome by using a primer set designed from the published nisA sequence. Sequencing result showed that the fragment contained the whole nisZ and 5' portion of nisB, whose gene product was involved in postmodification of nisin. The upstream sequence, however, was completely different from those of reported nisin genes.

  • A food-grade integration vector based on site-specific recombination was constructed. The 5.7-kb vector, pIMA20, contained an integrase gene and a phage attachment site originating from bacteriophage A2, with the ${\alpha}$-galactosidase gene from Lactobacillus plantarum KCTC 3104 as a selection marker. pIMA20 was also equipped with a controllable promoter of nisA ($P_{nisA}$) and a signal peptide-encoding sequence of usp45 ($SP_{usp45}$) for the production and secretion of foreign proteins. pIMA20 and its derivatives mediated site-specific integration into the attB-like site on the Lactococcus lactis NZ9800 chromosome. The vector-integrated recombinant lactococci were easily detected by the appearance of blue colonies on a medium containing $X-{\alpha}-gal$ and also by their ability to grow on a medium containing melibiose as the sole carbon source. Recombinant lactococci maintained these traits in the absence of selection pressure during 100 generations. The ${\alpha}-amylase$ gene from Bacillus licheniformis, lacking a signal peptide-encoding. sequence, was inserted downstream of $P_{nisA}\;and\;SP_{usp45}$ in pIMA20, and the plasmid was integrated into the L. lactis chromosome. ${\alpha}-Amylase$ was successfully produced and secreted by the recombinant L. lactis, controlled by the addition and concentration of nisin.
