Understanding the nip geometry and heat transfer phenomena of soft nip calenders, which has been used in the production of newsprint and coated papers for many years, is very important since improper setting of soft nip calendering conditions causes deterioration of paper quality and productivity. In this study theoretical analysis on nip pressure and heat transfer phenomena in the nip of soft nip calenders has been made. The variables examined were calendering pressure, surface temperature of the heating roll, nip residence time and ingoing sheet moisture, By measuring nip widths and maximum nip pressure with Prescale film at a normal temperature, accurate line load has been obtained. With this line load, nip pressures at different temperature and nip widths were calculated. Results showed that as temperature increased, nip widths increased and nip pressures decreased. Equations derived for the heat conduction phenomena in soft nip calender nip were derived based on the semi-infinite plate and finite difference method and were used for the analysis of heat transfer within the nip. Temperature profiles in z-direction of paper within the nip were obtained. Finite difference method allowed more accurate analysis of the heat transfer in the calender nip. In this study newsprint and coated paper were considered as a single plate and two-layer plate consisted of sheet and coating layers, respectively. Heat trans-fer to paper increased as heated roll surface temperature and nip residence time were increased.
Urea-based nitrogen fertilizer was widely utilized in maize production, but transporters involved in urea uptake, translocation and cellular homeostasis have not been identified. Here, we isolated three maize aquapoin genes, ZmNIP2;1, ZmNIP2;4 and ZmTIP4;4, from a cDNA library by heterogous complementation of a urea uptake-defective yeast. ZmNIP2;1 and ZmNIP2;4 belonged to the nodulin 26-like intrinsic proteins (NIPs) localized at plasma membrane, and ZmTIP4;4 belonged to the tonoplast intrinsic protein (TIPs) at vacuolar membrane. Quantitative RT-PCR revealed that ZmNIP2;1 was expressed constitutively in various organs while ZmNIP2;4 and ZmTIP4;4 transcripts were abundant in reproductive organs and roots. Expression of ZmTIP4;4 was significantly increased in roots and expanded leaves under nitrogen starvation, while those of ZmNIP2;1 and ZmNIP2;4 remained unaffected. Functions of maize aquapoin genes in urea transport together with their distinct expression manners suggested that they might play diverse roles on urea uptake and translocation, or equilibrating urea concentration across tonoplast.

Silicon (Si) has the potential to improve plant growth and stress tolerance. The study aimed to explore Si-involving plant responses and molecular characterization of different Si-responsive genes in alfalfa. In this study, the exogenous supplementation of Si enhanced plant growth, and biomass yield. Si-acquisition in alfalfa root and shoot was higher in Si-supplemented compared to silicon deficient (-Si) plants, implying Si-acquisition has beneficial on alfalfa plants. As a consequence, the quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) was significantly increased in silicon-sufficient (+Si) plants. The quantitative gene expression analysis exhibited a significant upregulation of the Lsi1, Lsi2, Lsi3, NIP5;1, and NIP6;1 genes in alfalfa roots, while BOR1, BOR4, NIP2, and NIP3 showed no significant variation in their expression. The MEME results further noticed the association of four motifs related to the major intrinsic protein (MIP). The interaction analysis revealed that NIP5;1 and Lsi1 showed a shared gene network with NIP2, BOR1, and BOR4, and Lsi2, Lsi3 and NIP3-1, respectively. These results suggest that members of the major intrinsic proteins (MIPs) family especially Lsi1, Lsi2, Lsi3, NIP5;1, and NIP6;1 genes helped to pass water and other neutral solutes through the cell membrane and those played significant roles in Si uptake and transport in plants. Together, these insights might be useful for alfalfa breeding and genome editing approaches for alfalfa improvement.

The influence of four process parameters of soft nip calendering including calendering pressure, temperature, moisture content and nip residence time on bulk, smoothness and tensile strength of newsprints has been investigated. In addition, the effect of basis weights on calendering responses has been examined. Bulk of newsprints decreased and smoothness increased with the increase of the calendering pressure, temperature, moisture content of the sheets and nip residence time. Improvement in tensile strength was observed when low calendering pressure and high temperature of heat-ing roll were employed. Tensile strength of the newsprint, however, decreased abruptly when the calendering temperature and pressure increased above certain levels due to the rupture of sheet structure, which has been verified by SEM. SEM micrographs also showed that it would be possible to maintain the inner bulk while densifying the fibers on the outer surface of newsprint by adjusting the soft nip calendering variables properly.

The contact roll is often used to regulate the winding tension as well as the entrained air in a wound roll by adjusting the contact force to the winding roll. But the contact force generated by other rolls, like assistant nip rolls, in a winding(or roll changing) process may act as disturbance to the control of the winding tension. In this paper, the mechanism of a roll change process is analysed. Ana, the behavior of the contact and the nip rolls are mathematically modeled. A nonlinear PID(NPID) controller is designed to control the winding tension and to reject the effect of disturbance generated by the nip roll on the winding tension variation. Computer simulation study showed that the performance of the suggested NPID controller is improved compared with that of the PID controller in controlling the winding tension and in rejecting the effect of the disturbance.

This paper presents a multi-costraint optimization model for redundant system reliability. The optimization model is usually formulated as a nonlinear integer programming (NIP) problem. This paper reformulates the NIP problem into a linear integer programming (LIP) problem. Then an efficient 'Branch and Straddle' algorithm is proposed to solve the LIP problem. The efficiency of this algorithm stems from the simultaneous handling of multiple variables, unlike in ordinary branch and bound algorithms. A numerical example is given to illustrate this algorithm.
19 pesticides including 12 insecticides, 2 herbicides and 5 fungicides have been tested for mutagenic activity in the Salmonella/microsome system. It was found that insecticides, DDVP, Trichlorfon, Sumithion, Naled, fungicide, TMTD and herbicide NIP induced base substitute mutation and herbicide MO frameshift mutation. Mutagenicity of Sumithion and NIP was appeared only after rat microsomal enzyme activation and that of TMTD was increased after the microsomal enzyme activation.

Centrobin/Nip2 was initially identified as a centrosome protein that is critical for centrosome duplication and spindle assembly. In the present study, we determined the expression and subcellular localization of centrobin in selected mouse tissues. Immunoblot analysis revealed that the centrobin-specific band of 100 kDa was detected in all tissues tested but most abundantly in the thymus, spleen and testis. In the testis, centrobin was localized at the centrosomes of spermatocytes and early round spermatids, but no specific signal was detected in late round spermatids and elongated spermatids. Our results also revealed that the centrosome duplication occurs at interphase of the second meiotic division of the mouse male germ cells. The centrobin protein was more abundant in the mitotically active ovarian follicular cells and thymic cortex cells than in non-proliferating corpus luteal cells and thymic medullary cells. The expression pattern of centrobin suggests that the biological functions of centrobin are related to cell proliferation. Consistent with the proposal, we observed reduction of the centrobin levels when NIH3T3 became quiescent in the serum-starved culture conditions. However, a residual amount of centrobin was also detected at the centrosomes of the resting cells, suggesting its role for maintaining integrity of the centrosome, especially of the daughter centriole in the cells.

Currently, active research is being performed on printing of electronic devices such as RFID devices, flexible displays, solar cells, and e-paper. This technique has several advantages over existing technologies such as lithography and etching. In particular, RFID devices, flexible displays, solar cells, and e-paper require flexibility and a mass production system. Thus, attention is being focused on the roll-to-roll process. High quality should be guaranteed in the roll-to-roll printed electronics systems, and good thickness and roughness qualities must be ensured. Experimental design was applied to this problem to analyze the main effects and interaction effects of various factors. Matching technology between the nip roll characteristics and the quality of the print pattern in roll-to-roll printed electronics systems was proposed to improve the printing quality.
