Methods: A total of 22 university students participated in this study (10 males and 12 females). Twelve subjects received $\alpha$-wave music and art appreciation. The other subjects received neither. All subjects were assessed for hand function (manual dexterity, power grip, pinch, lateral pinch, tactile sense) using a Purdue pegboard, dynamometer, pinch gauge, and Semmes-Weinstein monofilament wire. The data were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests. Results: The results were as follows: 1. In the experimental group, manual dexterity and tactile sense were significantly increased between pre- and post-intervention (p<0.05). Within the control group, manual dexterity and power grip were significantly increased between pre- and post-test (p<0.05). 2. With regard to dexterity and tactile sense, the experimental group experienced a significant post-intervention increase compared to the control group (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in power grip, pinch, or lateral pinch changes between the two groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study show that $\alpha$-wave music and art appreciation affect hand function with regard to manual dexterity and tactile sense.

  • Objectives : As of 2013, South Korea ranked number one in the world in smartphone penetration rate with 67.6%. Unfortunately, with the rise of smart phone use, side effects such as fraud, loss of personal information, identity theft, formation and widening of a mobile information gap, and last, but not least, smart phone addiction, also increased. Methods : Seventh (7th)graders from a girls' junior high school in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, we reevaluated the Smart phone Addiction Proneness Scale (S-scale). Among the 9 students classified as high risk users, 5 were randomly selected for a study group, and the remaining 4 students, meanwhile, were designated as a control group. The study group received Korean medicine music therapy (KMMT) in a total of 8 sessions, each session lasting 50 minutes. Both pre- and post-interventions, the two groups completed the S-scale, Harris and Harris' concentration grid exercise, STAI, and STAXI-K. We analyzed the data by t-test and paired t-test using IBM SPSS Statistics. Results : KMMT had a significant influence on proneness to smart phone addiction (t=3.130, p=.035). KMMT had positive effects on concentration improvement (t=-2.935, p=.043), trait-anxiety symptoms improvement (t=2,992, p=.040), and anger-expression control (t=4.416, p=.012). Conclusions : KMMT had positive, improving effects on trait anxiety and anger expression, which in turn enhanced the improvement of concentration as well as the decrease of smart phone-addiction proneness.

For the research, between 21 to 22 years old four hearing-impaired college students, who could do lip reading, were chosen. In quantity program, improved version of college student stress measuring method which invented by Gyoung-gu Jun and Gyo-hyeon Kim(1991) were applied, and graphs has been used for analysis. In quality program, for reliability, the researcher and two music therapists observed and analysed it. The period of research was from Dec 26, 2007 to Feb 21, 2008. There were total twenty sessions and two sessions were assigned for each week. One was 40 minutes individual session, and the other one was 50 minutes group session. Even though auditory function is critical in music playing or listening, this study showed the positive results of the therapeutic use of music on stress management for college students with hearing impairment. Future studies are important to continue to investigate the effectiveness of music therapy for hearing impaired clients who are under stress with various age range.

A study has found that it is one of the leading causes of stimulating the thought of committing suicide in Korean high school students. So it is necessary to reduce the high school student's suicide rate. Main content of this research is to implement a personalized music recommendation system. Music therapy can help the student deal with the stress, anxiety and depression problems. Proposed system works as a therapist. Proposed system is personalized brain music treatment that is making a brain training application running on smart phone or pad. That overcomes the critical problems of time and space constraints of existing brain training program. By using this brain training program, student can manage the stress easily without the help of expert.

  • Using Kohut's selfobject perspective as a foundation, this qualitative study explored the empathy with music and analyzed the empirical meanings in relation to 'Mirroring selfobject need', 'Idealized selfobject need', and 'Twinship selfobject need'. The participants included 13 music therapy graduate students who took part in individual interviews about their musical experiences. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed via content analysis. As a result, seven categories with 16 meaningful concepts emerged under three dimensions: Gratification of selfobject need for mirroring, gratification of selfobject need for idealization, and gratification of selfobject need for twinship. Participants described experiencing unconditional understanding and acceptance from music, feeling stronger and safer in music, and being identified with and connected to music. These findings suggest that participants continuously gratify their selfobject needs by expanding the self and empathizing themselves through music. This study in significant in that it is the first qualitative study to analyze participants' musical experiences from Kohut's selfobject perspective.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine perceived supervisory satisfaction depending on the type of supervision. Twenty-six music therapy graduate students who enrolled in a practicum course participated in this study. All participants received four individual and four group supervision sessions over the course of the semester. After each supervision session, participants were asked to rate their satisfaction with supervision on the Supervisory Satisfactory Questionnaire(SSQ). Results showed that there was no significant difference in the mean ratings between individual and group supervision conditions, indicating that the type of supervision would not differently affect the perception of overall supervisory satisfaction. However, a detailed analysis of ratings for each questionnaire item and comments from the participants imply that while individual supervision would be perceived to meet supervisees' individual needs more effectively, satisfaction with group supervision would be less influenced by supervisor styles. This study would provide descriptive information of perceived satisfaction with supervision type as an initial trial toward suggesting the systematic approach to the music therapy supervision format. Further studies are needed to investigate how effective and culturally responsive supervision format would be structured to facilitate supervision process and maximize supervision outcome.

  • Purpose : This study was to compare and analyze major factors related to smartphone addiction according to the gender of health-related college students. Methods : 720 people who voluntarily participated and agreed to fill out the questionnaire were randomly sampled. Smartphone addiction was measured using the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version (SAS-SV), sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), anxiety symptoms were measured using the self-assessment anxiety scale (SAS), and depression symptoms were measured using the self-assessment depression scale (SDS). In addition, the age of each individual and the main function of smartphone use were also investigated. Results : The prevalence of smartphone addiction was higher among female students than male students (p<.05), while male students mainly played games and female students mainly used multimedia (video/music) viewing and social networking services (p<.05). In addition, male students showed a high association with smartphone addiction in the group where games were the main function of smartphone use, the group with low sleep quality, and the group with anxiety symptoms (p<.05), but for female students, multimedia (video/music) Or, the group in which social networking service is the main function of smartphone use, the group with low sleep quality, and the group with symptoms of anxiety and depression showed a high correlation with smartphone addiction (p<.05). Conclusion : It is expected that the results of this study will be used as basic data for providing customized solutions considering the characteristics of smartphone addicts.
