  • This study was a randomized before-and-after design of 17 subjects in the experimental group and 17 subjects in the control group to investigate the effects of listening to relaxing music on the mood state and autonomic nervous system, that is, heart rate of hospitalized patients with mental illness. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS V15.0. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in mood state and autonomic nervous system, that is heart rate and the effect of listening to relaxation music was objectively verified(<.05). among the subdomains of mood states, tension(<.00), depression (<.00), vitality (<.03), fatigue () <.01), excluding anger (>.39) and confusion (>.33) showed a significant difference, proving that it is an effective intervention method applied to hospitalized mentally ill patients. In the future, we would like to suggest long-term intervention research and development and application, and research on the effect of mood change and heart rate using individual preferred music.

  • Soundtrack dissonance, which appears in the background music of a movie scene, is a phenomenon of using songs or compositions that contrast with the general sentiment of the situation. A sad scene usually uses a slow tempo of sad music to match the mood of the scene. However, sometimes, in order to play background music that follows a depressing, sad, or anxious scene, there is a case of inserting music with an opposite atmosphere such as bright music, exciting music, fast-tempo music, or magnificent music. The method of presenting music that is contrary to the mood of the scene is a kind of psychological technique that inflicts a kind of mental shock on the audience and makes them remember a particular situation. In this study, we have investigated the meaning coming from scenes and Soundtrack Dissonance in movies, in order to understand the role that music and images play.

All instruments sound grandly in the first part, and subsequently sound gentle. The central sound of Woo(羽) becomes La. This music appears dark and tragic mood that is generally used in the minor key. It is played slowly on the whole and appears lyrical feeling in the process of controlling and quiet. In the future, the study on diagnosis and therapy through the standardization of the five-sounds will be continued.

  • When retrieving music with folksonomy tags, internal use of numeric tags (AV tags: tags consisting of Arousal and Valence values ) instead of word tags can partially solve the problem posed by synonyms. However, the two predecessor tasks should be done correctly; the first task is to map word tags to their numeric tags; the second is to get numeric tags of the music pieces to be retrieved. The first task is verified through our prior study and thus, in this paper, its significance is seen for the second task. To this end, we propose the music mapping table defining the relation between AV values and music and ANOVA tests are performed for analysis. The result shows that the arousal values and valence values of music have different distributions for 12 mood tags with or without synonymy and that their type I error values are P<0.001. Consequently, it is checked that the distribution of AV values is different according to music mood.

  • Purpose: The aim of the investigation was to identify the effects of purposeful activities combined with music on upper extremity function, motivation, and mood in acute stroke patients. Methods: For the study, 19 acute stroke inpatients were recruited at a general hospital in Korea. The patients were allocated between an experimental group (n=9) and a control group (n=10). The experimental group performed purposeful activities with their preferred music, and the control group carried out purposeful activities without music. The 2 groups received the treatments 30 min per day, 5 days per week, for 4 weeks. Measurements were taken before and after intervention, including a manual function test (MFT) for measuring upper extremity function, a volitional questionnaire (VQ) for assessing motivation, and the Beck depression inventory (BDI) and Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) for assessing mood. Results: In post-treatment measurement, both groups showed greater MFT, VQ, and BDI scores than in pre-treatment. Significantly greater VQ and BDI changes were represented in the experimental group as compared to the control group. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, purposeful activities combined with music have a positive effect on motivation and depression in acute stroke patients.

  • Folksonomies have potential problems caused by synonyms, tagging level, neologisms and so forth when retrieving music by tags. These problems can be tackled by introducing the mood intensity (Arousal and Valence value) of music as its internal tag. That is, if moods of music pieces and their mood tags are all represented internally by numeric values, A (Arousal) value and V (Valence) value, and they are retrieved by these values, then music pieces having similar mood with the mood tag of a query can be retrieved based on the similarity of their AV values though their tags are not exactly matched with the query. As a prerequisite study, in this paper, we propose the mapping table defining the relation between AV values and folksonomy tags. For analysis of the association between AV values and tags, ANOVA tests are performed on the test data collected from the well known music retrieval site last.fm. The results show that the P values for A values and V values are 0.0, which means the null hypotheses could be rejected and the alternative hypotheses could be adopted. Consequently, it is verified that the distribution of AV values depends on folksonomy tags.

  • Since stress can cause a variety of diseases, the relaxation of stress is an important factor for preventing diseases. One way to relieve stress is to use auditory or visual materials. If auditory and visual ones are used together, the effect of stress relaxation will be maximized. In this context, we analyze mood distribution of genre of music and color distribution of mood from the mood data for musics and color data for mood words collected directly from volunteers. Based on these two distributions, we also perform the $X^2$-test with Minitab for checking that color distributions are different from genre to genre. The results show that a different genre has a different color distribution and that the distributions of color, brightness and saturation depend on mood (P<0.0001). The results will be used to develop an emotional lighting system which plays lighting according to music mood, which can be applied to psychotherapy but more data and analysis are needed for clinical trials.
