Agrocybe aegerita is an important mushroom cultivated in Korea, with good feel and a peculiar fragrance. A. aegerita can be cultivated throughout the year using culture bottles but is more susceptible to contamination than other mushrooms. Twenty-two pathogens were isolated from the fruiting bodies and compost of A. aegerita, and seven isolates were isolated from Pleurotus ostreatus to compare with the A. aegerita isolates, collected from Gimje, Iksan, Gunsan of Chonbuk, and Chilgok of Gyeongbuk Province in 2009. These isolates were identified based on morphological and molecular characteristics. Of the 29 isolates, 26 were identified as Trichoderma spp. and the remaining three were Aspergillus spp., Mucor spp., and Penicillium spp. A phylogenetic analysis revealed that the 26 isolates of Trichoderma were divided into four taxa, namely T. harzianum, T. pleuroticola, T. longibrachiatum, and T. atroviride. Among the Trichoderma spp., 16 isolates (55.2%) were identified as T. harzianum, six as T. pleuroticola (20.7%), two as T. longibrachiatum, and the remaining two were T. atroviride.
The compost dextrose(CD) medium was selected a an optimum liquid culture media for Portobella(Agaricus brunescens). The optimal conditions for the mycelial growth of Agaricus brunescens were 25 and pH 7.0. Sucrose and soluble starch were favorable to mycelial growth. Malt extract and ammonium nitrate appeared to be more favorable than the other kinds of nitrogen source. The optimum C/N ratio as about 10.When the collected Portobella trains were compared with growth characteristics, KME 49007 appeared the highest of $44.6kg/3.3m^2$.

The effect of wheat straw mix was tested to develop rice straw replacement media. The chemical contents were analysed after late fermentation. Nitrogen content and C/N ratio of the 20% wheat straw mixing medium were 2.2% and 16.7 and the only rice straw using medium were 2.0% and 17.9, respectively. When the 20% wheat straw mixing treatment was compared to the only rice straw medium, pinhead initiation period was shortened and the yield was increased as much as 30%. Therefore the 20% wheat straw mixing medium is expected to replace the rice straw medium.

Dahyang, a CNARES's newly bred cultivar, is a CM061202 strain isolated and selected from 161 single-spores of brown button mushroom. It was selected as a new cultivar after comparison of yield, mycelial growth and quality with No. 705. Mycelial growth of Dahyang on compost extract mushroom complete medium at $25^{\circ}C$ for 15 days was 63mm when it was compared with that of No. 705 with 38mm. The cultivation temperature of Dahyang was 15 to $19^{\circ}C$ which was $2^{\circ}C$ higher than that of No. 705 with 15 to $19^{\circ}C$ cultivated on rice straw bed. The color of pileus of Dahyang was brown. Pinhead producing period was 30 days which is 1 day late than that of No. 705 with 29 days. Dahyang yielded 37% more with $49.1kg/3.3m^2$ than that of No. 705 with $35.8kg/3.3m^2$, respectively. The weight was 16.0g which was heavier than 14.0g of No. 705. The thickness and diameter were also more than those of No. 705. The stipe was shorter and thicker than that of No. 705. Also physical characteristics such as hardness and elasticity were better than that of No. 705.
The results of series studies on the ratio of supplements, out-door composting and out-door fermentation induced by using the rice straw as a main substrates at the cultivation of Agaricus bisporus, and the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus using the rice straw bundles on its compost are as follows; When rice straw for cultivation of A. bisporus was used as the main substrates in synthetic compost as a carbon source, yields were remarkably high. Fermentation was more rapid than that of barley straw or wheat straw and the total nitrogen content was high in rice straw compost. Use of barley straw compost for cultivation of A. bisporus was shown of low yield compared with rice straw, but when a 50% barley straw and 50% rice straw mixture was used, the yield was almost the same as that using only rice straw. The total organic nitrogen on the compost were shown the positive relation to the yield of A. bisporus, but the ammonium nitrogen negative relation to the mycelial growth and yield of A. bisporus. When rice straw was used as the main substrate for compost media, urea was the most suitable source of nitrogen. Poor results were obtained with calcium cyanamide and ammonium sulfate. When urea was applied three separate times, nitrogen loss during composting was decreased and the total nitrogen content of compost was increased. The supplementation of organic nutrient activated compost fermentation and increased yield of A. bisporus. The best sources of organic nutrients selected were as follows: perilla meal, sesame meal, wheat bran and poultry manure, etc. Soybean meal, tobacco powder and glutamic acid fermentation byproducts which were industrial wastes, could be substituted for perilla meal, sesame meal and wheat bran as organic nutrient sources for compost media. During out door composing of rice straw for cultivation of A. bisporus, using of tuner, composter and tunnel system increased up to 13% of its yield, and also cut down 34% of production Cost. The cultivation of P. ostreatus and utilizing of rice straw and wheat straw was established and its yield was high on the rice straw pots. When the substrates 'Rice straw' was heated by steam at $60^{\circ}C$ for 6 hr. mycelial growth of P. ostreatus was moderately rapid and its yield was high.
World production of mushrooms has been increasing 10-20% every year. Recently, Pleurotus eryngii and P. nebrodensis are very popular as new mushroom species for cultivation. Two kinds of mushrooms, Gumji (Ganoderma) and Soji, were described in old book of Samguksagi (History of the three kingdoms; 1145) in Koryo-dynasty. Many kinds of mushrooms were also described in more than 16 kinds of old books during Chosun-dynasty in Korea. One hundred and sixty commercial strains of 25 species in mushrooms were distributed to cultivators. By the way, only 8 varieties of them have registered variety protection. Mushroom industry as important export products developed from 1960 to 1980. Production of mushrooms as food was 181,828 metric tons valued at 800 billion Korean won in 2003. Isolated and identified substances from mushrooms are promising antifungal, antiinflammatory, antitumor, antiviral (anti-HIV), antibacterial & antiparasitic, antidiabetic, immunomodulating, kidney tonic, hepatoprotective, nerve tonic, and sexual potentiator. These substances can also be used for blood pressure regulation and effective against cardiovascular disorders, hypocholesterolemia & hyperlipidemia, and chronicbronchitis. Mushroom products including pharmaceuticals, tonics, healthy beverages, functional biotransformants, and processed foods have also became available on the markets. Compost and feed can likewise be made from mushroom substrates after harvest. The mushroom industry is already one of the fastest growing investment sectors in Korea. By the way, there is a need to strain improvement for variety protection, advanced cultivation technology at low cost for growers, and control of demand and supply for marketing in order to more upgrade development of mushroom industry in the future.
This study was conducted to evaluate the feed-nutritional value of spent mushroom substrates(SMS) as a roughage source for ruminants through in vitro and in situ experiments. The SMS was classified into a roughage source with high fiber(NDF 64~78%) and low protein(CP 7~11%). The chemical composition of SMS was affected mainly by the primary culture ingredient rather than mushroom species. Compared with sawdust-SMS, cotton waste-SMS contained less(P<0.05) NDF and more(P<0.05) nonfibrous carbohydrate and ash(P<0.05). In vitro DM and NDF disappearances were high in the order of corn cob-, cotton waste-, and sawdust-SMS, in situ DM, NDF and ADF disappearances at 24hr incubation also showed the same pattern with in vitro trials. Compared with sawdust-SMS, cotton waste-SMS had higher digestible fractions and lower non-digestible fractions of NDF and ADF(P<0.05), resulting in higher in situ DM and NDF disappearances(P<0.05) and higher ruminal degradability(P<0.05). Therefore, the preferential use of cotton waste-SMS to sawdust-SMS is recommended as a roughage source for ruminants.
Recovery of ${\alpha}$-amylase (EC 3.2.1.1), lignin peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.14), laccase (EC 1.10.3.2), xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8), ${\beta}$-xylosidase (EC 3.2.1.37), ${\beta}$-glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.21) and cellulase (EC 3.2.1.4) from spent mushroom composts (SMCs) of Pleurotus cornucopiae, Pleurotus ostreatus, Pleurotus eryngii, Hericium erinaceum, Lyophyllum ulmarium, Agrocybe cylindracea, Lentinus lepideus, and Flammulina velvtipes were investigated using different extraction buffers. The maximum recovery of the enzymes was mostly detected in SMC extracts with tap water and 0.25% Triton X-100 by shaking incubation (200 rpm) for 2 h at $4^{\circ}C$. The xylanase (152 U/g) and laccase (8.1 U/g) activities were the highest in SMC extracts from F. velvtipes and P. eryngii. In addition, high enzymatic activities of ${\alpha}$-amylase (3.6 U/g) and cellulase (3.4 U/g) was detected in SMC extract of A. cylindracea. Futhermore, cellulase and laccase activities of SMCE from P. eryngii were compared to commercial enzymes.
In this study, we analyzed the densities and taxonomic characteristics of various microorganisms that play important roles in Agaricus bisporus culture medium composting, and examined changes in the levels of decomposition-related enzymes secreted by these microorganisms. Various microorganisms such as thermophilic bacteria, actinomycetes, fluorescent Pseudomonas spp., and filamentous bacteria are closely associated with culture medium composts of Agaricus bisporus. The population densities of microorganisms change, and harmful bacteria disappear during thermophilic composting. Psychrobacter sp., Pseudomonas sp., Bacillus sp., and Pseudoxanthomonas sp. accounted for the highest proportion of bacteria in the culture media during outdoor composting, whereas Bacillus sp. and Psychrobacillus sp. were dominant after pasteurization. Cellulose and hemicellulose enzymes of the microorganisms were important at an early stage of rice straw composting and after decomposition of carbon sources, respectively. Microorganisms that secreted these enzymes were present in the second and third turning stage of composting.
This review provides background information on the importance of bioremediation approaches. It describes the roles of fungi, specifically white rot fungi, and their extracellular enzymes, laccases, ligninases, and peroxidises, in the degradation of xenobiotic compounds such as single and mixtures of pesticides. We discuss the importance of abiotic factors such as water potential, temperature, and pH stress when considering an environmental screening approach, and examples are provided of the differential effect of white rot fungi on the degradation of single and mixtures of pesticides using fungi such as Trametes versicolor and Phanerochaete chrysosporium. We also explore the formulation and delivery of fungal bioremedial inoculants to terrestrial ecosystems as well as the use of spent mushroom compost as an approach. Future areas for research and potential exploitation of new techniques are also considered.
