  • The general purpose programs are in their fixed algorithm and theory of mechanics which can not be altered without painful program modifications. Users are usually guided by user's manual for data input. The several symbolic manipulation programs for structural analysis are introduced recently. These programs allow users to include a wide class of solution algorithm and to specify, by means of some symbolic manipulation, a combination of analytical steps to suit a particular problem. As they can solve a single domain problem, a large computer is usually needed. The scope of this study is to develop an efficient symbolic manipulation program with space beam element, plate bending element and eigen value routines. The incorporated Substructure capability and generation capability of finite element characteristic arrays (e.g., stiffness matrix, mass matrix) enables users to analyse multidomain problem with small computer. The program consists of modulized independent processors, each having its own specific function and is easily modified, eliminated and added. The processors are efficiently handling data by the Data base approach which is the concept of integrated program network(IPN).

  • IP-based design methodology has been popularly employed for SoC design to reduce design complexity and to cope with time-to-market pressure. Due to the request for high performance of current mobile systems, embedded SoC design needs a multi-processor to manage problems of high complexity and the data processing such as multimedia, DMB and image processing in real time. Interface module for communication between system buses and processors are required, since many IPs employ different protocols. High performance processors require interface module to minimize the latency of data transmission during read-write operation and to enhance the performance of a top level system. This paper proposes an automatic interface generation system based on FSM generated from the common protocol description sequence of a bus and an IP. The proposed interface does not use a buffer which stores data temporally causing the data transmission latency. Experimental results show that the area of the interface circuits generated by the proposed system is reduced by 48.5% on the average, when comparing to buffer-based interface circuits. Data transmission latency is reduced by 59.1% for single data transfer and by 13.3% for burst mode data transfer. By using the proposed system, it becomes possible to generate a high performance interface circuit automatically.

  • In this paper, parallel computing method on the three-dimensional electromagnetic field is proposed. The present electromagnetic scattering analysis is conducted based on the time-harmonic vector wave equation and the finite element method. The edge-based element and 2nd -order absorbing boundary condition are used. Parallelization of the elemental numerical integration and the matrix assemblage is accomplished by allocating the partitioned finite element subdomain for each processor. The graph partitioning library, METIS, is employed for the subdomain generation. The large sparse matrix computation is conducted by MUMPS, which is the parallel computing library based on the multi-frontal method. The accuracy of the present program is validated by the comparison against the Mie-series analytical solution and the results by ANSYS HFSS. In addition, the scalability is verified by measuring the speed-up in terms of the number of processors used. The present electromagnetic scattering analysis is performed for a perfect electric conductor sphere, isotropic/anisotropic dielectric sphere, and the missile configuration. The algorithm of the present program will be applied to the finite element and tearing method, aiming for the further extended parallel computing performance.

  • A novel fast parallel NTGST is proposed for high resolution computer vision inspection of the BLUs in a LCD production line. The conventional computation- intensive NTGST algorithm is modified and its C codes are optimized into fast NTGST to be adapted to the SIMD parallel architecture. And then, the input inspection image is partitioned and allocated to each of the P processors in multi-threaded implementation, and the NTGST is executed on SIMD architecture of N data items simultaneously in each thread. Thus, the proposed inspection system can achieve the speedup of O(NP). Experiments using Dual-Pentium III processor with its MMX and extended MMX SIMD technology show that the proposed parallel NTGST is about Sp=8 times faster than the conventional NTGST, which shows the scalability of the proposed system implementation for the fast, high resolution computer vision inspection of the various sized BLUs in LCD production lines.

  • This paper presents a novel high-speed, low-complexity flexible 128/64-point $radix-2^4$ FFT/IFFT processor for the applications in high-throughput MIMO-OFDM systems. The high radix multi-path delay feed-back (MDF) FFT architecture provides a higher throughput rate and low hardware complexity by using a four-parallel data-path scheme. The proposed processor not only supports the operation of FFT/IFFT in 128-point and 64-point but can also provide a high data processing rate by using a four-parallel data-path scheme. Furthermore, the proposed design has a less hardware complexity compared with traditional 128/64-point FFT/IFFT processors. Our proposed processor has a high throughput rate of up to 560Msample/s at 140MHz while requiring much smaller hardware expenditure satisfying IEEE 802.11n standard requirements.

  • In this paper, we proposed a processor architecture that is suitable for next generation embedded applications, especially for personal information devices such as smart phones, tablet PC. Latest high performance embedded processors are developed to achieve high clock speed. Because increasing performance makes design more difficult and induces large overhead, architectural evolution in embedded processor field is necessary. Among more enhanced processor types, out-of-order superscalar cannot be a candidate for embedded applications due to its excessive complexity and relatively low performance gain compared to its overhead. Therefore, new architecture with moderate complexity must be designed. In this paper, we developed a low-cost SMT architecture model and compared its performance to other architectures including scalar, superscalar and multiprocessor. Because current personal information devices have a tendency to execute multiple tasks simultaneously, SMT or CMP can be a good choice. And our simulation result shows that the efficiency of SMT is the best among the architectures considered.

  • Recent studies in Big Data Analysis are showing promising results, utilizing the main memory for rapid data processing. In-memory computing technology can be highly advantageous when used with high-performing servers having tens of gigabytes of RAM with multi-core processors. The constraint in network in these infrastructure can be lessen by combining in-memory technology with distributed parallel processing. This paper discusses the research in the aforementioned concept applying to a test taxi hailing application without disregard to its underlying RDBMS structure. The application of IMDG technology in the application's backend API without restructuring the database schema yields 6 to 9 times increase in performance in data processing and throughput. Specifically, the change in throughput is very small even with increase in data load processing.

  • Cardiac electrophysiology studies often use simulation to predict how cardiac will behave under various conditions. To observe the cardiac tissue movement, it needs to use the high--resolution heart mesh with a sophisticated and large number of nodes. The higher resolution mesh is, the more computation time is needed. To improve computation speed and performance, parallel processing using multi-core processes and network computing resources is performed. In this study, we compared the computational speeds of CPU parallelization and GPU parallelization in virtual heart simulation for efficiently calculating a series of ordinary differential equations (ODE) and partial differential equations (PDE) and determined the optimal CPU and GPU parallelization architecture. We used 2D tissue model and 3D ventricular model to compared the computation performance. Then, we measured the time required to the calculation of ODEs and PDEs, respectively. In conclusion, for the most efficient computation, using GPU parallelization rather than CPU parallelization can improve performance by 4.3 times and 2.3 times in calculations of ODEs and PDE, respectively. In CPU parallelization, it is best to use the number of processors just before the communication cost between each processor is incurred.

  • This paper introduces design space exploration of many-core processors that meet high performance and low power required by the beamforming algorithm of image signals of mobile ultrasound. For the design space exploration of the many-core processor, we mapped different number of ultrasound image data to each processing element of many-core, and then determined an optimal many-core processor architecture in terms of execution time, energy efficiency and area efficiency. Experimental results indicate that PE=4096 and 1024 provide the highest energy efficiency and area efficiency, respectively. In addition, PE=4096 achieves 46x and 10x better than TI DSP C6416, which is widely used for ultrasound image devices, in terms of energy efficiency and area efficiency, respectively.
