  • Multiple level performance of seismically isolated elevated storage tank isolated with multi-phase friction pendulum bearing is investigated under totally 60 records developed for multiple level seismic hazard analysis (SLE, DBE and MCE). Mathematical formulations involving complex time history analysis have been proposed for analysis of typical storage tank by multi-phase friction pendulum bearing. Multi-phase friction pendulum bearing represent a new generation of adaptive friction isolation system to control super-structure demand in different hazard levels. This isolator incorporates four concave surfaces and three independent pendulum mechanisms. Pendulum stages can be set to address specific response criteria for moderate, severe and very severe events. The advantages of a Triple Pendulum Bearing for seismic isolation of elevated storage tanks are explored. To study seismic performance of isolated elevated storage tank with multi-phase friction pendulum, analytical simulations were performed with different friction coefficients, pendulum radii and slider displacement capacities.

  • The pendulum is a SIMO(Single-input multi-output) system that both angle of pendulum and position of cart controlled simultaneously by one actuator. In this paper, propose a hybrid neuro-controller to apply to pendulum system. We design the conventional optimal controller and the neural network as a identifier, which can identify the uncertainty of plant not modeled, respectively. Then we combine them into a novel controller, with a structure that the error between plant and identifier is added in conventional optimal control input Finally, the paper shows the validity of the proposed controller through computer simulations and experiments.

  • In the paper is proposed a hierarchical self-learning fuzzy controller for balancing and position control of an circular inverted pendulum system. To stabilize the pendulum at a specified position, the hierarchical fuzzy controller consists of a supervisory controller, a self-learning fuzzy controller, and a forced disturbance generator. Simulation example shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • When the nonlinearities, such as friction and backlash, are not considered in the controller design, undesirable oscillations can occur in the steady-state response of a control system. This paper deals with a method to reduce oscillations that often appear in the steady-state response of a pendulum system, which is controlled by a state feedback controller based on the linearized system model. With an assumption that the oscillations shown in the steady-state are caused by the Coulomb friction, we improve the performance of stabilization and tracking by estimating and compensating for the Coulomb friction in the pendulum system. Experimental results show that the control performance can be improved sufficiently by the proposed method, when it is applied to an inverted cart pendulum which is a multi-variable unstable system. Furthermore, we could see that the Coulomb friction model used in the estimation of the friction is valid in applying the suggested method.

  • In this paper, we have developed a general purpose motion controller using an FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array). The multi-PID controllers on a single chip are implemented as a system-on-chip for multi-axis motion control. We also develop a PC GUI for an efficient interface control. Comparing with the commercial motion controller LM 629 it has multi-independent PID controllers so that it has several advantages such as space effectiveness, low cost and lower power consumption. In order to test the performance of the proposed controller, robot finger is controlled. The robot finger has three fingers with 2 joints each. Finger movements show that position tracking was very effective. Another experiment of balancing an inverted pendulum on a cart has been conducted to show the generality of the proposed FPGA PID controller. The controller has well maintained the balance of the pendulum.

  • In this paper, we propose an approach to design of optimized Cascade controller for Rotary Inverted Pendulum system using Hierarchical Fair Competition-based Genetic Algorithm(HFCGA). GAs may get trapped in a sub-optimal region of the search space thus becoming unable to find better quality solutions, especially for very large search space. The Parallel Genetic Algorithms(PGA) are developed with the aid of global search and retard premature convergence. HFCGA is a kind of multi-populations of PGA. In this paper, we design optimized Cascade controller by HFCGA for Rotary Inverted Pendulum system that is nonlinear and unstable. Cascade controller comprise two feedback loop, parameters of controller optimize using HFCGA. Then designed controller evaluate by apply to the real plant.

  • This paper proposes a new nonlinear controller to swing-up an inverted pendulum system mounted on a car. This controller considers not only the pendulum but also the displacement of the cart. A single-input multi-output system is considered to control the inverted pendulum by using partial feedback linearization and nonlinear additional input. The asymptotic stability of the system is shown by using Lyapunov function. The simulation results show effectiveness of the proposed controller.

  • The fuzzy control and implementation of a new three-dimensional(3-D) inverted pendulum system are addressed. In comparison with conventional 1-D and 2-D systems, the 3-D inverted pendulum system is a proper benchmark system to simulate human's control action which includes the up and down motion to stabilize an inverted pendulum. To investigate the characteristics of the 3-D inverted pendulum system and to design of a fuzzy controller, we derive dynamic equations of the mechanism including a 3-axis cartesian robot and an inverted pendulum. We propose a design method of a fuzzy controller of the yaw and pitch angles of an inverted pendulum. In the design, the redundant degree-of-freedom(DOF) of the robot and the constrained workspace are taken into account. The performance of the proposed system is proved by experimental results using a developed PC-based Multi-Motion Control(MMC) board.

  • Responses of multi degree of freedom systems under random excitations can be estimated by using Monte Carlo simulation. The equations of motion of an elastic pendulum system include nonlinear terms and show irregular characteristics under random excitation. While the magnitude of random excitation is small the response of an elastic pendulum shows borderlines. As the magnitudes of excitation increase, the responses show divergence with very large amplitudes of motion and the tendency is diverse dependent on the magnitude and type of random excitations and the ratio of natural frequencies.
