  • We report a nanometer scale mark formation using a $PtO_x$ thin film or a TbFeCo rare-earth transition metal film and the mechanism. The multi-layer samples($ZnS-SiO_2/PtOx/ZNS-SiO_2,\;ZnS-SiO_2/TbFeCo/ZnS-SiO_2$) were prepared with a magnetron sputtering method on a polycarbonate or a glass substrate. By laser irradiation of approximately a few nanoseconds, nanometer scale marks were fabricated. During the fabrication process, the thin films were thermally reacted or inter-diffused during the laser irradiation. 75 nm bubble marks in the PtOx multi-layer sample by an approximately 4-ns laser irradiation. Inside the bubble mark, Pt particles with a few nanometer sizes are distributed. The $50{\sim}100$ nm bubble marks in the TbFeCo multi-layer sample by a few nanosecond laser irradiations. We will report the detail structure of the samples, the bubble mark formation process and the mechanism.

  • The $\underline{H}igh$ flux $\underline{A}dvanced$ $\underline{N}eutron$ $\underline{A}pplication$ $\underline{R}eact\underline{O}r$ (HANARO), an open-tank-in-pool type reactor, is one of the multi-purpose research reactors in the world. Since the commencement of HANARO's operations in 1995, a significant number of experimental facilities have been developed and installed at HANARO, and continued efforts to develop more facilities are in progress. Owing to the stable operation of the reactor and its frequent utilization, more experimental facilities are being continuously added to satisfy various fields of study and diverse applications. The irradiation testing equipment for nuclear fuels and materials at HANARO can be classified into capsules and the Fuel Test Loop (FTL). Capsules for irradiation tests of nuclear fuels in HANARO have been developed for use under the dry conditions of the coolant and materials at HANARO and are now successfully utilized to perform irradiation tests. The FTL can be used to conduct irradiation testing of a nuclear fuel under the operating conditions of commercial nuclear power plants. During irradiation tests conducted using these capsules in HANARO, instruments such as the thermocouple, Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT), small heater, Fluence Monitor (F/M) and Self-Powered Neutron Detector (SPND) are used to measure various characteristics of the nuclear fuel and irradiated material. This paper describes not only the status of HANARO and the status and perspective of irradiation devices and instrumentation for carrying out nuclear fuel and material tests in HANARO but also some results from instrumentation during irradiation tests.

  • Sonolysis of TCE (Trichloroethylene) was performed in 584 kHz rectangular reactor. At first, the effect of acoustic power and aqueous temperature which are both important factors to operate ultrasound system on sonolysis of TCE were examined under one side irradiation condition. First degradation rate constants of TCE and chloride yields were increased with increasing acoustic power from 100 to 300 W. And increasing the aqeuous temperature resulted in the increase of first degradation rate constants of TCE and the decrease of chloride yield. Sonolysis of TCE was performed under multi ultrasound irradiation conditions that total acoustic power of 300 W was distributed according to the number of irradiation sides. First degradation rate constants of TCE followed the order 4 sides > 3 sides > 1 side > 2 sides (parallel) > 2 sides (orthogonal). When comparing the experimental results under parallel and orthogonal irradiation conditions of 2 sides with 300 and 450 W, first degradation rate constants of TCE were similar, while production rate constants of hydrogen peroxide were more higher at parallel conditions compared to orthogonal conditions.

  • A water soluble spironaphthoxazine (SPO) was synthesized, and its spectral properties were determined. Under UV irradiation, colorless SPO shows intensive blue color while the intensity of its initial fluorescence decreased. In addition, SPO also exhibited high sensitivity to pH stimuli both in colorimetry and fluorometry distinguishing from the spectral appearance observed under UV irradiation. Further, integrating these two optical characteristics a three-state switching system can be established, and all interconversions can be observed by naked-eye.

  • During the irradiation tests of material and fuel rod, all components of the cylindrical structure with multiple holes act like heat sources due to high gamma heat and fission heat. The objective of this study is to formulate the general solution for the temperature distribution to estimate the thermal integrity of structure during irradiation tests. For the temperature distribution analysis, the two-dimensional heat conduction theory is used. The unmerical analysis is performed by the commercial finite element analysis code, ANSYS 6.1. If the cylindrical structure with hole number would not exceed three holes, the analysis results and finite element results are good agreement together. For the structure with four holes, the discrepancy between FE results and analysis results of the structural temperature distribution is increased.

  • We have investigated the alignment ability of multi-domains by using ion beam irradiation on diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin film layers. The DLC thin films were deposited by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) system and the low energy ion beam is irradiated from Kaufman type ion gun. The direction of liquid crystal alignment is varied by the direction of Ar ion beam irradiation.

  • The results of effective irradiation swelling in a wide range of burnup levels are numerically obtained for an inert matrix fuel, which are verified with DART model. The fission gas swelling of fuel particles is calculated with a mechanistic model, which depends on the external hydrostatic pressure. Additionally, irradiation and thermal creep effects are included in the inert matrix. The effects of matrix creep strains, external hydrostatic pressure and temperature on the effective irradiation swelling are investigated. The research results indicate that (1) the above effects are coupled with each other; (2) the matrix creep effects at high temperatures should be involved; and (3) ranged from 0 to 300 MPa, a remarkable dependence of external hydrostatic pressure can be found. Furthermore, an explicit multi-variable mathematic model is established for the effective irradiation swelling, as a function of particle volume fraction, temperature, external hydrostatic pressure and fuel particle fission density, which can well reproduce the finite element results. The mathematic model for the current volume fraction of fuel particles can help establish other effective performance models.

  • We investigated sterilization characteristics of UV lights by counting the number of bacteria units with varying sterilization time and distance from the light source. We focused on an idea that UV light of 184.9 nm could generate ozone and developed a new sterilizer. The UV-ozone duplex system sterilized bacteria faster than UV-only sterilizers. To reduce shadowing effects by target objects, we used UV transparent quartz plate as a support and put a reflecting plate. Distribution of UV irradiation intensity and ozone supply were analyzed by a 3D model and measured by a semiconductor UV sensor. But even with an Al reflector, multi-layered pens could not be treated properly from UV irradiation only. Ozone generating lamp could treat more uniformly multi-layered pens with a stirring fan by supplying ozone to shadowed surfaces.

  • Antibiotic resistant microbes were isolated in catfish, trout, eel and loach aquaculture effluent. The distribution of antibiotic resistant microbes in aquaculture effluent and the disinfection efficiency of antibiotic resistant microbes by electron beam irradiation were investigated. It was shown that the multi-drug resistant bacteria were Aeromonas sp., Citrobacter sp., Bacillus sp., Marinobacter sp., Pantoea sp., Pseudomonas sp. and Enterobacter sp. in aquaculture effluent. 41.7% of total strains showed the resistance against one antibiotic agent, and 58.3% of total strains showed the resistance against more than two antibiotics. It was evidently shown that the toxicity and physicochemical properties of antibiotics can be estimated using Quantitative Structure Analysis Relationship (QSAR). Electron beam irradiation was very effective for the disinfection of antibiotic resistant bacteria from aquaculture effluent, in which the disinfection efficiency was approximately 99.9% with electron beam of 1 kGy.
