  • Since air pollution problem by emissions from automotive vehicles has become social issues, lean-burn gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine is focused as an alternative to meet the requirement of reinforced emission regulation and improved fuel consumption. Spray-guided type DI combustion is promising technology, which characterized by the centrally mounted injector and closely positioned spark plug, since stable lean combustion can be realized even at ultra-lean mixture condition. In the present study, the effect of multi-ignition with developed charge coil on combustion and emission characteristics was investigated in optical accessible single cylinder engine. In order to fully understand the in-cylinder phenomena and the mechanisms of emission production, optical diagnostics, such as flame visualization was also carried out at frequently using operating condition. Multi-ignition is effective to improve fuel economy but increase NOx emission at flammability limit.

  • The purpose of this study is experimentally to analyze that the fuel mass fractions of multi-component mixed fuels have an effect on the characteristics of spray ignition and combustion under the ambient conditions of diesel combustion fields. The characteristics of ignition and combustion were investigated by chemiluminescence images and direct photography. The experiments were conducted in the RCEM(rapid compression expansion machine) with optical access. Multi-component fuels mixed with i-octane, n-dodecane and n-hexadecane are injected in RCEM by the electronic control of common rail injector. Experimental conditions set up 42, 72 and 112 MPa in injection pressure, 700, 800 and 900 K in ambient gas temperature. The results show that the ignition delay was dependent on high cetane number. In case of low ambient temperature, the more low boiling point fuels were mixed, the lower luminance regime had a remarkable effect and also shortened diffusion combustion by increasing heat release rate.

  • The interaction between chemistry and turbulence is treated by employing the Representative Interactive Flamelet (RIF) Model. The detailed chemistry of 114 elementary steps and 44 chemical species is adopted for the n-heptane/air reaction. In order to account for the spatial inhomogeneity of the scalar dissipation rate, the multi-RIF is used. The effect of the number of RIF on ignition delay is discussed in detail. Numerical results indicate that the present RIF approach successfully predicts the ignition delay time as well as the essential features of a spray auto-ignition process.

  • The effect of turbulence and ignition energy on flame kernel growth in mathanol-air mixtures has been studied in a constant volume vessel. Experiments were made under different turbulent intensity conditions, ignition energy and over a range of equivalence ratio. Characteristics of turbulent flow were grasped by measurments of gas pressure and visualization of flame propagation. Flow velocity was measured by use of hot wire anemometer. A comparison of the effect of turbulence on ignition probability and flame kernel volume variation ratio is also presented.

  • The combustion in the cylinder of spark ignition engine is completed after the delayed time that the liquid film fuel is vapourized as flowing into the combustion chamber. It is necessary to enhance the homogeneity of mixture and the combustion phenomenon in order to improve the heat efficiency and the emission characteristics of spark ignition engine. The main purpose of this paper is to manufacture a combustion analyzing system and examine closely the influence of non-uniformity due to the liquid film fuel flowing in the intake manifold on the combustion characteristics by using a 4 stroke multi- cylinder spark ignition engine. Moreover, with each cylinder, the interpretation of combustion characteristics by indicator diagram and the concentration of exhaust gas were investigated.

  • Backfire occurrence must be controlled for the practical use of hydrogen fueled engine. It was found from preceeding studies that crevice volume around piston rings could effect a backfire occurrence. In this study, a possible countermeasure to backfire occurrence was evaluated by using multi point ignition method around piston ring. The results showed that backfire limited equivalence ratio was increased by a little due to a enhancing effect of mixture combustion around piston crevice volume.

  • For rockets using cryogenic liquid hydrogen or liquid oxygen, chilling is required to avoid cavitation and surge problems. Chilling is categorized by the initial chilling/filling stage and the low-temperature maintenance stage. In addition, to improve satellite insertion capability, a multi-ignition capability is required and accordingly chilling to prepare for the next ignition during low-gravity coasting is also required. This paper describes the overall aspects of filling and low temperature maintain marinating for the booster and the upper stage engine including chilling for multi-ignition.

  • This paper investigates a power supply of medium voltage with enhanced ignition characteristics for plasma torches. A series resonant half-bridge topology is presented as a suitable ignition circuitry. The ignition circuitry is integrated into the main power conversion system of a multi-phase staggered three-level dc-dc converter with a diode front-end rectifier. A plasma torch rated at 3MW, 2kA and having a physical size of 1m is selected to be the high enthalpy source for a waste disposal system. The steady-state and transient operations of a plasma torch are simulated. The parameters of a Cassie-Mary arc model are calculated based on 3D magneto-hydrodynamic simulations. The circuit simulation waveform shows that the ripple of the arc current can be maintained within ${\pm}10%$ of its rated value under the presence of a load disturbance. This power conversion configuration provides a high enough ignition voltage, around 5KA, during the ignition phase and high arc stability under the existence of arc disturbance noise resulting in a high-performance plasma torch system.

  • Various blast pressure calculation methods have been developed for predicting the explosion pressure of vapor cloud explosions. Empirical methods include the TNT equivalent method, and multi-energy method. The multi-energy method uses a charge strength that considers environmental factors. Although the Kinsella guideline was provided to determine the charge strength, there are limitations such as guidelines related to ignition sources. In this study, we proposed an improved charge strength guideline, by subdividing the ignition source intensity and expanding the type classification through literature analysis. To verify the improved charge strength guideline, and to compare it with the result obtained using the Kinsella guideline, four vapor cloud explosion cases which could be used to estimate the actual blast pressure were investigated. As a result, it was confirmed that the Kinsella guidelines showed an inaccurate, that is, wider pressure than the actual estimated blast pressure. However, the improved charge strength guideline enabled the selection of the intensity of the ignition source, and more subdivided types through the expansion of classification, hence it was possible to calculate the blast pressure relatively close to that of the actual case.

  • Hydrogen is gaining attention as a sustainable and renewable energy source, potentially replacing fossil fuels. Its high diffusivity, wide flammable range, and low ignition energy make it prone to ignition even with minimal friction, potentially leading to fire and explosion risks. Workplaces manage ignition risks by classifying areas with explosive atmospheres. However, the effective installation of a blast wall can significantly limit the spread of hydrogen, thereby enhancing workplace safety. To optimize the wall installation of this barrier, we employed the response surface methodology (RSM), considering variables such as wall distance, height, and width. We performed 17 simulations using the Box-Behnken design, conducted using FLACS software. This process yielded two objective functions: explosion likelihood near the barrier and explosion overpressure affecting the blast wall. We successfully achieved the optimal solution using multi-objective optimization for these two functions. We validated the optimal solution through verification simulations to ensure reliability, maintaining a margin of error of 5%. We anticipated that this method would efficiently determine the most effective installation of a blast wall while enhancing workplace safety.
