  • In order to promote and comprehend marriage immigrants' culture, it is essential to understand the life of their families in their counties. For this study, data by a Philippine CFO(Commission on Filipino Overseas) has been analyzed, and the study researcher has attended an educational program run by the PDOS(Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar). Also, in order to understand the immigrants' families in their country, interviews have been done with some of the CFO employees, people arranged to immigrate to Korea through marriage, and female immigrants who are married. First, Filipino females have a positive attitude toward marriage with a foreign male. Most immigrants are from the rural parts of their country, and their families tend to rely on their daughters more than their sons. Therefore, they decide to marry Korean males and immigrate in order to support their families. However many of them do not have enough information about Korea. Second, Philippine's family system is of bilateral kinship, and traditionally, men and women are treated equally. Therefore, Filipino females tend to be well-educated, outgoing, and vibrant. Thus, they can create an active role in married life for themselves and support their family members. Lastly, based on videos and class materials on the topic of domestic violence that are used in the pre-educational programs for females planning to immigrate to Korea, the content of the program is to be revised.

  • Recently, the number of multi-cultural families have been on the rise for years in Korea. Although social concerns are on the increase, there is still no basic data of their oral health state. In this study, we examined the caries prevalence of mother-child pairs from some korean families and multi-cultural families, and collected some saliva from them. We evaluated Streptococcus mutans level and investigated the serotype distribution of Streptococcus mutans of them to confirm the transmission in mother-child pairs. As a results, to the Korean families, the percentages of serotype c, e, f, k were 95%, 10%, 10%, and 10%. And to the multi-cultural families, the percentages of serotype c, e, f, k were 68.8%, 31.25%, 43,75%, 18.8%. But, there is no significant relationship between the number of serotype per person, caries prevalence, and Streptococcus mutans level(p>0.05). In conclusion, there are differences of serotype distribution of Streptococcus mutans between the two families. Nevertheless, matching rate of more than one serotype between mother and their child was high (92.86%). So, vertical transmission of Streptococcus mutans in mother-child pairs could be demonstrated.

  • Objectives: This study examined the differences in the intention of having a second child and the related factors among Chinese and Vietnamese migrant women from the perspective of adaptation theory. Methods: Data were drawn from the National Survey on Multi-Cultural Families in 2009 and 2015. Among the total 7,615 married migrant women (Korean-Chinese, Chinese-Han, Vietnamese), those within the age group 20-39 within the first 5 years of marriage who had one child were selected. A frequency analysis, chi-squared test, and logit regression analysis were performed. Results: Different ethnic groups had different reasons for having a second child and the related factors also differed between 2009 and 2015. In 2009, after controlling the related variables, the intention of Korean-Chinese and Chinese-Han married immigrant women to have a second child was higher than that of Vietnamese women, but no such difference was found in 2015. Participation in their local community, first marriage, the gender of the first child, and whether they were living with their parents-in-law were associated with the intention of migrant women having a second child in the 2009 analysis model but these factors were not significant in the 2015 analysis model. In the latter model, the household income, a variable related to economic conditions, has a positive effect on the intention of having a second child. Conclusions: The significance of this study supports adaptation theory by addressing the similarity in the childbirth intention between recently married immigrant women and Korean women.

  • This study aims to extract and analyze the bibliotherapeutic values/situations of Korean folk-tales for multi-cultural families in Korea. By analyzing 27 stories in the Korean folk-tale picture book written in two languages(Korean & English), we can find out 5 kinds of situational analysis as follows: (1) There are more men than women by the biological sex factor, whereas there are more adults than younger persons by the biological age discrimination. (2) For the space concept, there are a lot of socially related stories in their surroundings. (3) In the vertical relationship, there are more conflict elements than in the horizontal one. (4) There are more helpers from the outside than in the inside circle for the solution of their problems. (5) As a story theme, greed, wisdom, belief and family component elements are greatly involved in the stories. Among their beliefs, there are a lot of wisdom and greed themes, while piety and royalty to parents and conflict against stepmothers are among the family components. All of these would be an archetype of Korean culture, which can play an important role not only to understand Korean lifestyle for the multi-cultural families, but also to learn and practice bibliotherapeutic values.
