This paper is suggesting the method to embody Multi-Axes robot controller by using CAN which has been the most popular industrial networks. The robot controller guarantees the efficiency and reliability by using CAN as a communication tool between upper robot control parts and lower control parts.
In order to enhance dexterity in execution of robot tasks, a redundant number of degrees-of-freedom (DOF) is adopted for design of robotic mechanisms like robot arms and multi-fingered robot hands. Associated with such redundancy in the number of DOFs relative to the number of physical variables necessary and sufficient for description of a given task, an extra performance index is introduced for controlling such a redundant robot in order to avoid arising of an ill-posed problem of inverse kinematics from the task space to the joint space. This paper shows that such an ill-posedness of DOF redundancy can be resolved in a natural way by using a novel concept named “stability on a manifold”. To show this, two illustrative robot tasks 1) robotic handwriting and 2) control of an object posture via rolling contact by a multi-DOF finger are analyzed in details.

Mobile multi-robot teams are useful in many critical applications such as search and rescue. Explicit communication among robots in such mobile multi-robot teams is useful for the coordination of such teams as well as exchanging data. Since many applications for mobile robots involve scenarios in which communication infrastructure may be damaged or unavailable, mobile robot teams frequently need to communicate with each other via ad hoc networking. In such scenarios, low-overhead and energy-efficient routing protocols for delivering messages among robots are a key requirement. Two important primitives for communication are essential for enabling a wide variety of mobile robot applications. First, unicast communication (between two robots) needs to be provided to enable coordination and data exchange. Second, in many applications, group communication is required for flexible control, organization, and management of the mobile robots. Multicast provides a bandwidth-efficient communication method between a source and a group of robots. In this paper, we first propose and evaluate two unicast routing protocols tailored for use in ad hoc networks formed by mobile multi-robot teams: Mobile robot distance vector (MRDV) and mobile robot source routing (MRSR). Both protocols exploit the unique mobility characteristics of mobile robot networks to perform efficient routing. Our simulation study show that both MRDV and MRSR incur lower overhead while operating in mobile robot networks when compared to traditional mobile ad hoc network routing protocols such as DSR and AODV. We then propose and evaluate an efficient multicast protocol mobile robot mesh multicast (MRMM) for deployment in mobile robot networks. MRMM exploits the fact that mobile robots know what velocity they are instructed to move at and for what distance in building a long lifetime sparse mesh for group communication that is more efficient. Our results show that MRMM provides an efficient group communication mechanism that can potentially be used in many mobile robot application scenarios.

This paper presents an algorithm for the path-finding problem in unknown environments with cooperative and commutative multi-robots. To verify the algorithm, we investigate the problem of escaping through the exit of a randomly generated maze by muti-robots. For the purpose, we adopt the so called frontier cells and cell utility functions, which were used in the exploration problem for the multi-robots. For the wireless communications among the mobile robots, we modify and utilize the so called the random basket routing, a kind of hop-by-hop opportunistic routing. A mobile robot, once it finds the exit, will choose its next action, either escape immediately or stay-and-relay the exit information for the others, where the robot takes one action based on a given probability. We investigate the optimal probability that minimizes the average escaping time (out of the maze to the exit) of a mobile robot.

Generally, multi-legged walking robots have excellent mobility in rough and uneven terrain, and they are deployed for the safety of rescuers in various disaster environments. However, as each leg is driven by a number of actuators, it leads to a complicated structure and high power consumption; therefore, it is difficult to put them into practical use. In this article, a new concept is proposed of a walking robot whose legs are driven by a complex linkage structure to overcome the deficiencies of conventional multi-legged walking robots. A double crank-rocker mechanism is proposed, making it possible for one DC motor to actuate the left and right movements of two neighboring thighs of the multi-legged walking robot. Each leg can also move up and down through an improved cam structure. Finally, each mechanism is connected by spur and bevel gears, so that only two DC motors can drive all legs of the walking robot. The feasibility of the designed complex linkage mechanism was verified using the UG NX program. It was confirmed through actual production that the proposed multi-legged walking robot performs the desired motion.

This study aims to improve the dynamic stiffness of an inspection robot frame to prevent derailment from transmission lines. Finite element models for the transmission lines and robot frame are developed for the multi-body dynamic simulation. Natural frequency analysis was conducted using the FE models. Three types of spacer damper clamps installed on 4-conductor transmission lines are used to evaluate the derailment of the robot. Multi-body dynamic simulations with FE models are demonstrated for sub-span oscillation. When the robot operates, derailment of inspection robot from the transmission lines is determined because of resonance. To prevent the resonance, body position was changed and thickness optimization was conducted. The results show that derailment was not occurred because of the natural frequency improvement.

Most of large scale solar panel handling robots adopt the timing-belt drive system for its driveline because of the simplicity and the easiness of implementation. The vibration caused by the flexure of the timing belt would increase as the size and the weight of the panel that the robot handles increase and the vibration would deteriorate the precision and/or productivity of the whole robot system. For the development of a proper control system and for the improvement of the design of the robot it is important to estimate the oscillatory response of the robot system including the flexible drive system properly. In this paper a flexible multi-body dynamics model of a large-scale solar-panel-handling robot with the flexible timing-belt drive system is developed using a generic multi-body dynamics analysis program, RecurDyn.

This article describes the analysis of stable grasping for multi-fingered robot. An analysis method of stable grasping, which is based on the three-dimensional acceleration convex polytope, is proposed. This method is derived from combining dynamic equations governing object motion and robot motion, force relationship and acceleration relationship between robot fingers and object's gravity center through contact condition, and constraint equations for satisfying no-slip conditions at every contact points. After mapping no-slip condition to torque space, we derived intersected region of given torque bounds and the mapped region in torque space so that the intersected region in torque space guarantees no excessive torque as well as no-slip at the contact points. The intersected region in torque space is mapped to an acceleration convex polytope corresponding to the maximum acceleration boundaries which can be exerted by the robot fingers under the given individual bounds of each joints torque and without causing slip at the contacts. As will be shown through the analysis and examples, the stable grasping depends on the joint driving torque limits, the posture and the mass of robot fingers, the configuration and the mass of an object, the grasp position, the friction coefficients between the object surface and finger end-effectors.

In mobile robotics, ultrasonic sensors became standard devices for collision avoiding. Moreover, their applicability for map building and navigation has exploited in recent years. In this paper, as the preliminary step for developing a multi-purpose autonomous carrier mobile robot to transport trolleys or heavy goods and serve as robotic nursing assistant in hospital wards. The aim of this paper is to present the use of multi-sensor data fusion such as ultrasonic sensor, IR sensor for mobile robot to navigate, and presents an experimental mobile robot designed to operate autonomously within both indoor and outdoor environments. The global map building based on multi-sensor data fusion is applied for recognition an obstacle free path from a starting position to a known goal region, and simultaneously build a map of straight line segment geometric primitives based on the application of the Hough transform from the actual and noisy sonar data. We will give an explanation for the robot system architecture designed and implemented in this study and a short review of existing techniques, Hough transform, since there exist several recent thorough books and review paper on this paper. Experimental results with a real Pioneer DX2 mobile robot will demonstrate the effectiveness of the discussed methods.
