  • CAMC (constant amplitude multi-code) has a better performance of error correction in iterative decoding than SPCPC (single parity check product code). CAMC benefits from a processing gain since it belongs to a spread spectrum signal. We show that the processing gain enhances the performance of CAMC. Additional correction of bit errors is achieved in the de-spreading of iteratively decoded signal. If the number of errors which survived the iterative decoding is less than or equal to ($\sqrt{N}/2-1$), all of the bit errors are removed after the de-spreading. We also propose a stopping criterion in the iterative decoding, which is based on the histogram of EI (extrinsic information). The initial values of EI are randomly distributed, and then they converge to ($-E_{max}$) or ($+E_{max}$) over the iterations. The strength of the convergence reflects how successfully error correction process is performed. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a gain of 0.2 dB in Eb/No.

  • Marine, shallow seismic data have been acquired and processed by newly developed multi-channel(6 channel), PC-based digital recording and processing system. The digital processing system includes pre-processing, swell-compensation filter, frequency filter, gain correction, deconvolution, stacking, migration, and plotting. The quality of processed sections is greatly enhanced in terms of signal-to-noise ratio and vertical/horizontal resolution. The multi-channel, digital recording, acquisition and processing system proved to be and economical, efficient and easy-to-use marine shallow seismic tool.

  • A multi-media variable processing gain DS/CDMA system are considered. Two types of information sources with different rates and transmitting powers are assumed to be stransmitted simultaneously in the same channel. Average signal-to-noise ratios at the correlation receiver outputs for each type of information sources are analytically derived as funtions of partial cross-correlations between spreading code sequences. As the difference of information rates between information sources increase, the difference between signal-to-noise ratio regarding random spreading code and that regarding pseudo random spreading code increases (maximum 1.3dB). The result can provide a analytical tools for use in multi-media DS/CDMA system design.

  • In training a deep learning model, it is crucial to tune various hyperparameters and gain speed and accuracy. While hyperparameters that mathematically induce convergence impact training speed, system parameters that affect host-to-device transfer are also crucial. Therefore, it is important to properly tune and select parameters that influence the data loader as a system parameter in overall time acceleration. We propose an automated framework called Num Worker Tuner (NWT) to address this problem. This method finds the appropriate number of multi-processing subprocesses through the search space and accelerates the learning through the number of subprocesses. Furthermore, this method allows memory efficiency and speed-up by tuning the system-dependent parameter, the number of multi-process spawns.

  • We investigate the pulsation characteristics in a multi-section DFB laser which is composed of one DFB section, phase tuning section, and gain section. Multi-section DFB lasers with anti-phase (AP) complex-coupled (CC) DFB structure show wide current ranges of gain and phase tuning sections fer stable pulsations compared to those with in-phase CC DFB structure or index-coupled DFB structure. For multi-section DFB lasers with AP CC DFB structure, the current range of a gain section for stable pulsations increases and the tuning range of the pulsation frequency increases as a coupling strength or a gain coupling coefficient increases Also, the tuning range using the phase variation in a phase tuning section increases. For a fixed coupling strength, the current ranges of gain and phase tuning sections for stable pulsations increase and the tuning range of the pulsation frequency increases as the length of a DFB section increases.

  • Task-based programming is becoming the state-of-the-art method of choice for extracting the desired performance from multi-core chips. It expresses a program in terms of lightweight logical tasks rather than heavyweight threads. Intel Threading Building Blocks (TBB) is a task-based parallel programming paradigm for multi-core processors. The performance gain of this paradigm depends to a great extent on the efficiency of its parallel constructs. The parallel overheads incurred by parallel constructs determine the ability for creating large-scale parallel programs, especially in the case of fine-grain parallelism. This paper presents a study of TBB parallelization overheads. For this purpose, a TBB micro-benchmarks suite called TBBench has been developed. We use TBBench to evaluate the parallelization overheads of TBB on different multi-core machines and different compilers. We report in detail in this paper on the relative overheads and analyze the running results.

  • In this paper, we present a method to improve the performance of the four transmit antenna quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (STBC) in the coded system. For the four transmit antenna case, the quasi-orthogonal STBC consists of two symbol groups which are orthogonal to each other, but intra group symbols are not. In uncoded system with the matched filter detection, constellation rotation can improve the performance. However, in coded systems, its gain is absorbed by the coding gain especially for lower rate code. We propose an iterative decoding method to improve the performance of quasi-orthogonal codes in coded systems. With conventional quasi-orthogonal STBC detection, the joint ML detection can be improved by iterative processing between the demapper and the decoder. Simulation results shows that the performance improvement is about 2dB at 1% frame error rate.

  • In this paper, it is analyzed that the error performance of a Multi-Carrier DS-CDMA system in a single cell with multipath Rician fading and multiple access interference (MAI) and the error performance of the system is compared with that of a Sing1e-Carrier DS-CDMA system. Moreover, the convolutional coding techniques with code rate of 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 are adopted in order to improve the error performance degraded by the multipath fading and MAI and performance improvement through the coding techniques is analyzed. As a result, it is shown that the number of users in each system can be determined by the number of branches of the rake receiver in a Single-Carrier DS-CDMA system and the number of carriers in a Multi-Carrier DS-CDMA system. Furthermore, the convolutional coding should be chosen with considering the trade-off between coding gain and a power limitation in a Multi-Carrier DS-CDMA system. In case of increasing the number of carriers, the processing gain is decreased but the error performance is improved through the effect of frequency diversity and the system can be possibility implemented due to the low chip rate.

  • In this paper, we propose a new modulation scheme called multi-coded variable pulse position modulation (MC-VPPM) for visible light communication systems. Two groups of signals (Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and Pulse Position Modulation (PPM) groups) are multi-coded by orthogonal codes for transmitting data simultaneously. Then, each multi-level value of the multi-coded signal is converted to pulse width and position which results in not only an improved data rate, but also a processing gain in reception. In addition, we introduce average duty ratio and cyclic shift concepts in PWM through which dimming control for light illumination can be supported without any degradation in communication performance. Through simulation, we confirm that the proposed MC-VPPM shows a comparable BER curve and much greater achievable data rate than the conventional VPPM scheme using a visible light optical channel environment.

  • This paper presents an efficient motion and disparity prediction method for multi-view video coding based on the high efficient video coding (HEVC) standard. The proposed method exploits inter-view candidates for effective prediction of the motion or disparity vector to be coded. The inter-view candidates include not only the motion vectors of adjacent views, but also global disparities across views. The motion vectors coded earlier in an adjacent view were found to be helpful in predicting the current motion vector to reduce the number of bits used in the motion vector information. In addition, the proposed disparity prediction using the global disparity method was found to be effective for interview predictions. A multi-view version based on HEVC was used to evaluate the proposed algorithm, and the proposed correspondence prediction method was implemented on a multi-view platform based on HEVC. The proposed algorithm yielded a coding gain of approximately 2.9% in a high efficiency configuration random access mode.
