  • We isolated endophytic fungi from the leaves of the conifer Juniperus chinensis var. sargentii inhabiting Mt. Hallasan. The fungal isolates were identified based on phylogenetic analysis using nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region, large subunit region of ribosomal DNA, translation elongation factor, and ${\beta}$-tubulin region. In this study, we confirmed four species of unreported endophytic fungi in Korea, Allantophomopsis lycopodina, Epicoleosporium ramularioides, Kabatina juniperi, and Seiridium podocarpi. We describe their morphological characteristics and the results of the phylogenetic analysis.

  • An analysis of recent studies and a field survey were conducted to investigate the distribution of the exotic species Ophraella communa LeSage (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) and the results' applicability for biological control against ragweed, which disturbs the island's ecosystem. The ragweed beetle (O. communa) can be found anywhere on the host plant Ambrosia artemisiifolia L., which grows in Jeju Island. Moreover, ragweed beetles possess the following characteristics: a high host plant specificity, a high-temperature resistance, an excellent mobility, and multivoltinism. Ragweed is extensively distributed and gradually expands its habitat further on Jeju Island. For this reason, it is recommended to take advantage of O. communa for the biological control of ragweed instead of pesticides or direct removal, considering that Jeju is endowed with many natural reserves and unique insular traits.

  • As climate change intensifies, the importance of studying plant phenology has increased, leading to a surge in research employing automated video recording devices like Phenocams. In this study, using the Phenocams operated by the National Institute of Ecology, we examined the trends in plant phenological changes across diverse ecosystem types in South Korea and analyzed their correlations with climate factors. The patterns of plant phenological changes varied by region and tree species. Pinus thunbergii and Pinus densiflora typically show an overall increase in their growth period, positively correlating with temperatures and precipitation during winter. However, uniquely, for Abies koreana on Hallasan Mt., a higher amount of precipitation in August leads to an earlier end of season (eos), and the correlation analysis with the recent phenomenon of dying A. Koreana seems necessary. beyond the analysis, solutions for handling missing data issues during the data collection process were proposed. Furthermore, to expand future research scope and encompass diverse ecosystem types, a suggestion to combine Phenocam research with satellite observations was presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the vegetation structure of Daphniphyllum macropodum community in the Yeong-sil and Seong-panack. To do so, 26plots ($(20m{\times}20m)$) were set up and surveyed. Plant communities were classified with 3 groups according to the analysis of classification by TWINSPAN and DCA Ordination; Pinus densiflora-Carpinus laxiflora (I), Carpinus laxiflora-Quercus serrata (II) and Carpinus tschonoskii (III). Daphniphyllum macropodum is appearing in understory and shrub layer of all groups. We found that Daphniphyllum macropodum will be dominated in understory and shrub layer. These results was judeged that these influence is depended on difference of altitude and accompanied species. Accompanied species were lived in similar growth environment to Daphniphyllum macropodum. That species were Styrax japonica, Quercus serrata of understory and Ilex crenata, Taxus cuspidata of shrub layer.

  • 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland and 2011 Shinmoedake's eruption in Japan evoked concerns from researchers for the possibility of explosion of Baekdusan volcano after long dormancy (repose period). National Emergency Management Administration has tried to evaluate the vulnerability of volcanic disaster and to prepare response to the potential risk and to mitigate the damages from the volcanic eruption, but a few studies have focused on the activities of Baekdusan. This study aims to clarify what the criteria between dormant volcano and active volcano based on geomorphologists' and geologists' researches. Volcanic experts have made a criterion of activeness such as the evidence of volcanic eruption within 10,000 year before present. More rigorous criterion which was made in 1991 by Japanese Meteorological Administration was 2000 years B.P. Both Baekdusan and Hallasan satisfy two criteria, so it is necessary for us to monitor the activity of both volcanoes and to reflect the facts into the curriculum.
