In Korea, 64% of the land is known as mountain area, but the definition and classification standard of mountain are not clear. Demand for utilization and development of mountain area is increasing. In this situation, the unclear definition and scope of the mountain area can lead to the destruction of the mountain and the increase of disasters due to indiscreet permission of forestland use conversion. Therefore, this study analyzed the variables and criteria that can extract the mountain boundaries through the questionnaire survey and the terrain analysis. We developed a mountain boundary extraction algorithm that can classify topographic mountain by using selected variables. As a result, 72.1% of the total land was analyzed as mountain area. For the three catchment areas with different mountain area ratio, we compared the results with the existing data such as forestland map and cadastral map. We confirmed the differences in boundary and distribution of mountain. In a catchment area with predominantly mountainous area, the algorithmbased mountain classification results were judged to be wider than the mountain or forest of the two maps. On the other hand, in the basin where the non-mountainous region predominated, algorithm-based results yielded a lower mountain area ratio than the other two maps. In the two maps, we was able to confirm the distribution of fragmented mountains. However, these areas were classified as non-mountain areas in algorithm-based results. We concluded that this result occurred because of the algorithm, so it is necessary to refine and elaborate the algorithm afterward. Nevertheless, this algorithm can analyze the topographic variables and the optimal value by watershed that can distinguish the mountain area. The results of this study are significant in that the mountain boundaries were extracted considering the characteristics of different mountain topography by region. This study will help establish policies for stable mountain management.
Simple estimating method of rock drilling and blasting work size is necessary to apply as a guidance of general road plan and a cost analysis of mountain forest road construction. For this work study, 11 cycles were divided in 5km route at Hyeonnammeon Yangyang-gun and the mountain slope at every 20m interval was measured. During working days all kind of works concerned on drilling and blasting was investigated in every cycle. Depending on the simple work study results it's work size can bef estimated with high correlation between drilling length in meter and frequency percentage of mountain slope more than 70%. With total drilling length known the machinery hours, drillers and explosive quantify can be estimated by the regression with high correlation. Estimation of drilling and blasting work by mountain slope gradient in road route is proposed like table 5 with estimating value of machinery hour, drillers and explosive in granite gneiss region.

This study was conducted to examine variations of 35 morphological characteristics of 6 natural populations of Zelkova serrata in Korea. On the basis of the results of the ANOVA tests, the populations were significantly different in 16 of the 20 quantitative morphological characteristics that were tested. In particular, the 'Cheongju-si Gutdae Mountain' population showed larger values in 9 of the 20 quantitative characteristics that were examined. In the results of principal component analysis of the characteristics, examined characteristics were not suitable for the variation of 6 natural populations. According to the results of cluster analysis, 'Namhae-gun Mijori Evergreen Forest' population was grouped with 'Yangpyeon-gun Yongmun Mountain' population to the nearest group, and then 'Cheongju-si Gutdae Mountain' population, 'Boeun-gun Sokri Mountain' population, 'Daegu metropolitan city Palgong Mountain' population, and 'Hamyang-gun Sang Forest' population were grouped in regular sequence.
This study was conducted as a restoration research in a mountain stream of hydrologic cycle system, which is a type of microsites purposely changing vegetation. The status of vegetation in the three experimental sites, water purification site, small dammed pole site, and aquatic plant restoration site, and one control site within the area of the mountain forest stream were investigated in three different periods, namely before sites restoration, year of sites restoration, and year after sites restoration. After one year of restoration, number of vegetation was increased in the small dammed pool and control site respectively. Vegetation coverage ratio of Zizania latifolia was increased at the water purification area. The effects of habitats restoration appeared to be good a year after the restoration of the experimental sites, in terms of families and species composition of the introduced vegetation, and stream flow. Therefore, the results of the study strongly suggest that fairly effective ways to restore and reproduce degrading mountain hydroecological habitats are by way of forming pool sites and small dams in intermittent mountain streams and re-vegetating with selected plants.
One of the widely used applications of remote sensing studies is environmental change detection and biodiversity conservation. The study area Hustai Mountain is situated in the transition zone between the Siberian taiga forest and Central Mongolian arid steppe. Hustai National Park carries out one of several reintroduction programs of takhi (wild horse or Equus ferus przewalskii) from various zoos in the world and it represents one of a few textbook examples of successful reintroduction of an animal extinct in the wild. In this paper we describe the results of an analysis on the change of remaining forest area over the 7-year period since Hustai Mountain was designated as a protected area for reintroduction to wild horses. Today the forested area covers approximately 5% of the Hustai National Park, mostly the north-facing slopes above 1400 m altitude. Birch (Betula platyphylla) and aspen (Populus tremula) trees are predominant in the forest. We used Landsat ETM+ images from two different years and multi temporal MODIS NDVI data. Land types were determined by supervised classification methods (Maximum Likelihood algorithm) verified with ground-truthing data and the Land Change Modeler (LCM) which was developed by Clark Labs. Forested area was classified into three different land types, namely the forest land, mountain meadow and mountain steppe. The study results illustrate that the remaining birch forest has rapidly changed to fragmented forest land and to open areas. Underlying causes for such a rapid change during the 15-year period may be manifold. However, the responsible factors appear to be the drying off and outbreak of forest pest species (such as gypsy moth or Lymantria dispar) in the area.
The research which it sees is the simulation research for "The Ecological Diversion of Forest Land-Use System". It accomplished the simulation which applies a permission standard, it developed escape it did a model and the basic draft. From the research which it sees in order to investigate the application characteristic of natural intimate mountain district application standard the mountain district whole aspect instance middle actual object a time mountain district use standard about under selecting which it will yell it applied. "Natural intimate mountain district development standard triangular position plan research" from compatibility of the mode of life mountain district whole aspect permission standard which is proposed about under investigating it presented the improvement program and a institutional improvement direction of corresponding standard. About under preserving plan it applies the yearly environment the mountain district to sleep it prepares the foundation for it accomplished the transcendental research for. With the achievement resources which the mountain district has resultantly must preserve a value, limit of the development size it will be able to minimize the effect which it follows in development, the arrangement method back could be proposed, also the case which will use the mountain district where it is damaged induces the development which cabinets to the concept of demobilization, the case which will apply the existing forest resources takes a triangular position with the act it will be able to increase the circulating value of the resources and will do.
This study provides basic data for the cost operating strategy of forest welfare infra facilities. We use the Price-Sensitivity Measurement technique (PSM) for a forest welfare infra facility (healing forest, wood camping, forest leisure sport, etc.). In addition, we conduct a survey in the four target locations (Kyung-gi, Kyung-sang, Chung-cheong, and Jeolla) and receive answer from 390. The results show that higher the price of present infra facilities, higher the price sensibility. The forest welfare infra facilities we include are healing forest 1,894 won, wood camping 5,625 won, mtb park 9,530 won, mountain horseback riding 14,556 won, paragliding 20,252 won, mountain ski 3,075won. However, we investigate zip-lines at lower than current price levels.
Forest road (10 Km) constructed for the demonstrational purpose by Forest Work Training Center (F.T.C.) in 1984 was partly damaged through the roadside landside and ditch erosion by the typhoon in 1986. The causes were investigated to apply for protecting against the damage of mountain forest road. The damaging length caused by roadside landside is around 3% out of total length of 10 Km forest road, and mostly coming from the curve road filled up more than 10 m slope length on the concave mountain slope, partly from the foot of fillslope along the ever-following valley and from the both side of fillslope under the outlet of culvert with ever-flowing water. In case of ditch erosion, the big damage at V-type ditch is coming from the overflow of valley water flowing down along the inside slope. Other problem is also showing in the steepness of longitudial gradient, which is felt as a problem in road to be constructed under more than 10 persent of gradient. Other cause of ditch erosion is coming from the bury of sand basin (water collecting wall) by the debris in small diameter culvert zone, namely less than 400mm, in diameter and by the soil mass slumped down from steep wall slope. From above results the causes of F.T.C. model road damage is showing to come from no-following the general guide or little experience to protect against the forest road damage. When improved above mentioned mistakes, F.T.C. Method of mountain forest road type could be developed as a model of Mountain forest road.

This study estimated and evaluated the high resolution (1km) gridded mountain meteorology data of daily mean, maximum and minimum temperature based on ASOS (Automated Surface Observing System), AWS (Automatic Weather Stations) and AMOS (Automatic Mountain Meteorology Observation System) in South Korea. The ASOS, AWS, and AMOS meteorology data which were located above 200m was classified as mountainous area. And the ASOS, AWS, and AMOS meteorology data which were located under 200m was classified as non-mountainous area. The bias-correction method was used for correct air temperature over complex mountainous area and the performance of enhanced daily coefficients based on the AMOS and mountainous area observing meteorology data was evaluated using the observed daily mean, maximum and minimum temperature. As a result, the evaluation results show that RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of air temperature using the enhanced coefficients based on the mountainous area observed meteorology data is smaller as 30% (mean), 50% (minimum), and 37% (maximum) than that of using non-mountainous area observed meteorology data. It indicates that the enhanced weather coefficients based on the AMOS and mountain ASOS can estimate mean, maximum, and minimum temperature data reasonably and the temperature results can provide useful input data on several climatological and forest disaster prediction studies.
This study analyzed settlement motivation, life satisfaction factors, policy requirement targeting return farmers on mountain village. 8 target villages where return farmers live at least 10 people were selected according as cooperation of the local governments through literature by considering the area of the whole country. The return farmers in target villages were conducted a face to face survey with village headman's pre-coordination from February to September 2013. A total of 94 surveys were performed and 87 copies were used in the analysis. According to the results, the most important factor influenced the decision to be a return farmer was "my family health(3.97)". The correlation analysis was performed to examine factors related with satisfaction of "return farmer life in general". The result showed that "change of physical health" was the most important correlativity with 0.544 correlation coefficient and 0.05 significant level and "family relationship" was followed with 0.424 correlation coefficient and 0.05 significant level. According to the "important factor for the successful return-farmer life", 42.7% of respondents chose "harmonious relationships with local residents" and "stable source of income" was chosen by 29.3% of residents. A questionnaire for the analysis of policy requirements showed that "education system related Forestry(Agriculture)" was the highest demand with 4.oo points. The result can be used as a basis for establishing policies with activation of mountain villages to attract to constantly increasing population of return farmers.
