  • The purposes of this study were twofold. Firstly, we sought to examine the effects of the severity of behavior problems of children with autism spectrum disorders and maternal stress coping styles on maternal parenting stress. Secondly, we investigated whether maternal stress coping styles moderate the relationship between the severity of children's behavior problems on parenting stress. The participants of this study comprised 106 mothers of children with ASD who were aged 6 to 18. In order to measure the research variables, the Parenting Stress Scale(Hwang, 2002), the Korean version of Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18(Oh, Kim, Ha, Lee, & Hong, 2010), the Ways of Coping Checklist(Kim, 1987) were used. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and hierarchical multiple regression analyses. The results indicated that both the severity of externalizing behavior problems and the emotion-focused stress coping styles had significant and positive effects on parenting stress. Second, the stress coping styles had no moderating effect on the relationship between the severity of behavior problems(externalizing behavior problems, internalizing behavior problems) and maternal parenting stress.

  • This study examined the effects of support systems and traditional value beliefs about the role of women on the parenting stress of dual-career mothers. The subjects were 203 employed mothers with one child 4- to 36-months of age. The influential independent variables affecting parenting stress listed in order of significance were satisfaction with child care, value placed on traditional maternal roles, sex of child, and cost of child care. Contrary to the researchers assumptions, social support systems had no effect on parenting stress. The results of this study have implications for formal and informal support systems for employed mothers with young children.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of mothers' parenting stress according to the knowledge and behaviors that mothers have on infant development. The subjects of this study are 145 mothers whose infants range in age from 18 to 36 months. The instruments used are: 1) Knowledge of Child Development Inventory (KCDI) (Larsen & Juhasz, 1986), 2) Q-sort modified by Ahn (2001), 3) Parenting Stress Scale (PSS) (Kim & Kang, 1997), and a demographic questionnaire. The data analyses used SPSS 12.0 which employs basic statistics, a reliability test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation. The results of this study indicate a correlation (r= -.20*) between behaviors of child-rearing and parenting stress of mothers. Specifically, mothers behaviors of child-rearing related to cognition development could predict parenting stress.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to explore the subjective sleep quality of depressed and non-depressed mothers in the late postpartum period and to determine the relationship with their health promoting behaviors, family functioning, parenting stress. Method: A non-probability sample of 128 mothers completed a self-administered questionnaires at 4-6weeks postpartum. The Edinburgh postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used to measure mother's experiences of depression symptoms and sleep. Related factors of sleep quality were measured by the Korean Family Functioning Scale, Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile, and Parenting Stress Index. The data was analysed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, and the Pearson's correlation coefficients. Result: The results indicated that the depressed mothers (EPDS$\geq$ 10) had poorer sleep quality than the non-depressed mothers(EPDS < 10), reported shortened sleep duration, and experienced more daytime dysfunctions. Depressed mothers who had no job, did not drink coffee, and were primipara tended to report poorer sleep quality. There were significant correlation between poorer sleep quality and lower health promoting behaviors, higher family intimacy and lower family communication, and higher parenting stress among depressed mothers. Conclusion: Our findings support the view that depressed mothers' experiences of poor sleep are much higher than non-depressed mothers and multi-faced. Nurse professionals should screen for sleep problems in the depressed mothers with a different biopsychosocial and behavioral aspect from the non-depressed mothers in the late postpartum period.

Results: The factors influencing depression in mothers of toddlers included ego-identity, economic status, and perceived health status. These variables explained 60.0% of depression in mothers of toddlers. Conclusion: Lower ego-identity was associated with more intense depression. • This study aimed to examine the mediation effects of foreign-born mothers' daily stress, depression, and neglectful parenting in the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier in multicultural families. For testing research questions, using Model 6 of the SPSS PROCESS Macro, this study analyzed simple and multiple mediation effects with a sample of 1,021 adolescents with Korean fathers and foreign-born mothers from the 8th wave's raw data of the Multicultural Adolescent Panel Study (MAPS). The main results are as follows. First, mothers' acculturative stress positively influenced children's carrier barrier. Second, mother's daily stress and neglectful parenting individually mediated the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier. Third, mother's depression and neglectful parenting dual-mediated the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier. Fourth, a triple mediation of mothers' daily stress, depression, and neglectful parenting was found in the influence of mothers' acculturative stress on children's carrier barrier. Based on the results, strategies to support the career development of multicultural adolescents were suggested.

  • This study looked into changes in the parenting stress and the depression of mothers whose children at the age of three or younger have been suffering from developmental risk, and discussed how the parenting stress would constantly influence the depression. In order to achieve the research goal, the study used the data from the Panel Study of Korean Children. According to the findings of the study, first of all, the parenting stress increased significantly for the next four years after the childbirth. The study also understood that there are personal differences among the mothers in relation to how much the stress gets worse overtime. Second, more severe the parenting stress during the year of the childbirth, the greater the depression during the same year, and this parenting stress's being intensified even more greatly for the four years right after the childbirth turned out to have a significant effect on how much the depression develops. What this study has found out so far confirms that the depression of the mothers will get reduced when the mothers of the children with the developmental risks before the age of three try to efficiently deal with their parenting stress.
