  • FDG-PET has potential as an effective, non-invasive tool to measure tumor response to anticancer therapy. The changes in tumor FDG uptake may provide an early, sensitive guide to the clinical and subclinical response of tumors to cancer treatment, as well as functional assessment of residual viable tumor. This may allow the evaluation of subclinical response to anticancer drugs in early clinical trials and improvements in patients management. However, monitoring tumor responses with FDG-PET is still in its infancy. The methods of measurement of FDG uptake are currently diverse and timing with respect to anti cancer therapy variable. Therefore, there is a need for larger-scale trials along with standardized methodology and a collection of reproducibility data. The recent guideline from the European group seems to be the most comprehensive. In future, the combination of morphological and metabolic images may improve the quantitative nature of these measurements by relating tumor viability to total tumor mass. More data on sensitivity and specificity of FDG-PET technique are needed along with continued advancement of PET methodology.

  • Optical fiber sensors are by now broadly accepted as an innovative and reliable device for structural health monitoring, to be used either embedded into or bonded on structures. The accuracy of the strain measurement achievable by optical fiber sensors is critically dependent on the characteristics of the bonding of the various interface layers involved in the sensor bonding/embedding (structure material and gluing agent, fiber coating and gluing agent, fiber coating and fiber core). In fact, the signal of the bonded/embedded optical fiber sensor must correspond to the strain experienced by the monitored structure, but the quality of each involved interface can affect the strain transfer. This paper faces the characterization, carried on by both mechanical tests and morphological analysis, of the strain transfer function resulting with epoxidic and vinylester gluing agent on polyimide and acrylate coated optical fibers.

  • Acanthopanax divaricatus, a member of the Araliaceae family, has been used as an invigorant in traditional Korean medicine. During disease monitoring, a stem with small, irregular, brown lesions was sampled at a farm in Cheonan in 2011. The symptoms seen were sunken cankers and reddish-brown needles on the infected twig. The isolated fungal colonies were whitish, having crenated edges and aerial mycelium on the surface, and with black gregarious fruiting bodies. The reverse plate was creamy white. Conidia were $17{\sim}22{\times}3.5{\sim}4.2{\mu}m$, fusiform, 4-septate, and straight to slightly curved. The nucleotide sequence of the partial translation elongation factor 1 alpha gene of the fungal isolate, shares 99% sequence identity with that of known Pestalotiopsis ellipsospora. Based on the results of the morphological and molecular analyses, the fungal isolate was identified as P. ellipsospora. In Korea, this is the first report of canker on A. divaricatus.

  • Analysis of intraepidermal nerve fibers using skin biopsy is a recently developed technique, providing diagnostic information on small fiber neuropathies. The specimens are obtained by 3 mm punch biopsy, which is safe and minimally invasive. Immunohistochemical staining by Protein gene product (PGP) 9.5 demonstrate not only intraepidermal nerve fibers but dermal structures, such as sweat gland and erector papillae. Up to now, many studies agree that intraepidermal nerve fiber density is dramatically reduced in various sensory neuropathies. The utility of density measure was confirmed with high sensitivity in the diagnosis of sensory neuropathy, comparable to sural nerve biopsy or quantitative sensory testing. Besides quantitative methods, morphological changes like axonal swelling and fragmentation can be used as predegenerative markers. This article reviews the technique of skin biopsy and clinical and experimental usefulness of skin biopsy in diagnosing and monitoring peripheral neuropathies.

  • Invasive species are organisms that are introduced into places outside of their natural distribution range. The global pet trade is facilitating the introduction of invasive species into new countries and areas. Among the introduced alien species, turtles are one of the most common animal groups whether lives in wetland ecosystems, such as wetlands or reservoirs. Like other countries around the world, exotic turtles is becoming a growing concern for the wetland ecosystem in South Korea. In this study, we report new reports of subspecies of Painted turtle (Chrysemys spp.): Chrysemys picta marginata, C. p. bellii and C. dorsalis, from the reservoirs in downtown Cheongju and Gwangju, South Korea. We used morphological features, such as the characteristics of the legs, plastron, and carapace, to identify the turtles. It is assumed that all turtles were artificially released into nature. Considering the increasing number of reports on the introduction of alien invasive turtles in Korean wetlands, we recommend the formulation of an immediate and systematic management plan for pet trades and organized continuous monitoring programs.

  • Haliotis arabiensis Owen, Regter & Van Laethem, 2016 was found near Muscat city of Oman in the Sea of Oman in September 2021. A total of 85 abalone specimens were collected under small boulders from a depth of 2-5 m during the scuba diving survey from seven stations located from Sidab to Bandar Khairan. The shell length (SL) of the abalone ranged between 10.0 and 30.0 mm, on average 19.9 ± 0.22 mm SL. The sex was determined in 15 females and 21 males. The study presents photos and a comparative table with morphological descriptions of four abalone species (H. arabiensis, H. mariae, H. rugosa multiperforata and H. unilateralis) which are important for differentiating the small abalone species from juveniles of H. mariae during monitoring surveys of this important commercial species in Oman.
