On community data. sampled in regular intervals on a long-term basis. artificial neural networks were implemented to extract information on characterizing patterns of community changes. The Adaptive Resonance Theory and Kohonen Network were both utilized in learning benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the Soktae Stream of the Suyong River collected monthly for three years. Initially, by regarding each monthly collection as a separate sample unit, communities were grouped into similar patterns after training with the networks. Subsequently, changes in communities in a sequence of samplings (e.g., two-month, four-month, etc.) were given as input to the networks. After training, it was possible to recognize new data set in line with the sampling procedure. Through the comparative study on benthic macroinvertebrates with these learning processes, patterns of community changes in chironomids diverged while those of the total benthic macro-invertebrates tended to be more stable.
Species composition and seasonal change were examined monthly with shrimp assemblage caught in the coastal waters of Solido, Korea. Samplings were conducted in Solido using a beam trawl from June 2000 to May 2001. In the study period, a total of 16 species of shrimp belonging to six families were collected. Species was dominated by Palaemon gravieri, Crangon hakodatei, Trachysalambria curvirostris and Metapenaeus joyneri. Higher abundance of shrimp occurred in September and November, and lower abundance in June. Species diversity was reached its maximum (0.82) in November and its minimum (0.06) in January. Shrimp species in the study area can be grouped into three groups on the basis of their occurrence patterns: resident, seasonal and temporary species.
Objectives: Bioaerosols released by treating organic-waste resources cause a variety of environmental and hygiene problems. The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution characteristics of the airborne bacteria emitted from a pig manure composting plant, a principal site for organic-waste resource facilities. Methods: Three types of pig manure composting plant were selected based on fermentation mode: screw type, rotary type and natural-dry type. Each site was visited and investigated on a monthly basis between September 2009 and August 2010. A total of 36 air samplings were obtained from the pig manure composting plants. The air sampling equipment was a six-stage cascade impactor. Quantification and qualification of airborne bacteria in the air samples was performed by agar culture method and identification technique, respectively. Results: The mean concentrations of airborne bacteria in pig manure composting plant were 7,032 (${\pm}1,496$) CFU $m^{-3}$ for screw type, 3,309 (${\pm}1,320$) CFU $m^{-3}$ for rotary type, and 5,580 (${\pm}1,106$) CFU $m^{-3}$ for natural dry type. The screw type pig manure composting plant showed the highest concentration of airborne bacteria, followed by the natural dry type and the rotary type. The ratio of respirable to total airborne bacteria was approximately 40-60%. The predominant genera of airborne bacteria identified were Micrococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp. and Escherichia spp. Conclusion: Monthly levels of airborne bacteria were highest in August and lowest in November regardless of fermentation mode. There was no significant correlation relationship between airborne bacteria and environmental factors such as temperature, relative humidity and particulate matters in pig manure composting plants.
Samplings have been monthly collected in Jeju Island, Korea, using ser nets. A total of 759 individuals were sampled from June to November 2006. We analyzed mantle length distribution, monthly changes in maturity stages, maturation size and sex ratio. Mean Mantle length of the female specimens ranged from 6.7 to 50.3 cm and that of the male specimens ranged from 6.7 and 50.0 cm. The spawning period was November. The Mantle length at 50 % group maturity was estimated to be 17.1 cm. Sex ratio was 1 : 1.3 (male : female), suggesting the female population may be predominant.
Standing crops of freshwater phytoplankton was studied from October 1998 to September 1999 in Hyendo, Maam, Jangam, and Napo of Kumgang River. Standing crops peaked in July in Hyendo $(39.5{\times}10^3Cells ml^{-1}), Maam (112.1{\times}10^3Cells ml^{-1}), and Jangam (125.5{\times}10^3Cells ml^{-1}), while in August in Napo (288.6{\times}10^3Cells ml^{-1}), respectively. The standing crops ranged less than 5,000 cells ml^{-1} in most of months in Hyendo and Maam, while more than 5,000 cells ml^{-1}$ throughout the year in Napo, Jangam's standing crops being intermediate. Total standing crops throughout the year increased with downstream; the standing crops of Napo was 9.6 times higher than that of Hyendo. The standing crops peaked from spring to early summer in Jangam and peaked in other seasons in Napo. The small centric diatoms Cyczotella spp., Stephanodiscus spp. and filamentous diatoms Aulacoseira spp. played an important role to form the peak of standing crops.
The soil of the reclaimed tidal land, located in Chogi-ri, Is. Kanghwa, Korea was used in this experiment. The experimented soil samples were collected from 18 sites with its time elapsed after the shore-protection works, soil-depth and the vegetation of saline plants, and at each site samplings were conducted monthly from March through October, 1968, for the purposes of examining the changes of microbial populations for the microbes such as bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi, by using the dilution plate method. The numbers of the microbes in these soils generally showed lower levels comparing with those of other soils. The more time elapsed after the reclamation, the higher numbers of the microbes inhibited the soils. Higher populations were there in the surface soils than in the lower part of the area. The surface soils included comparatively better conditions in aeration and contents of organic matter than in the lower part, and this fact was. same as in general soils. However, not so was this in the case of March, April and October due to the higher soil temperatures in the lows. At the experimental sites where the halophytes such as Salicorniu were grown vigourously, the more densly the plants grew, the higher populations of actinomycetes and fungi were, but not in the case of bacterial population. This means, in this soil with dense Salicornia, it is difficult to obtain good-natured soils in short time without a higher population of bacteria. For the rapid utilization of the land soil, in this view of point, the methods increasing the number of bacteria in the soil are needed as well as the cultivation and harvesting Salicorniu which indicated in the privious paper(Hong, et al., 1969a). According to the results of this experiment, the changes of soil-microbial populations in the reclaimed tidal land soil containing high salinity depend deeply upon the interrelations of many environmental factors such as soil-salinity, soil-components and contents, concentration of organic matters, pH, aeration, and air and soil temperatures, as in the general soils.
The common octopus, Octopus vulgaris is commercially important species in Korea. Korean fishing vessels have actively caught it. However, the study of this species has been poorly known. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide information about maturation and spawning period of this species. Samplings have been monthly collected in Tongyoung and Sacheon of Gyeongsangnam-do, using traps. A total of 748 individuals were sampled from February 2007 to January 2008. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stages, gonadosomatic index, total weight at 50% group maturity. The octopus total weight was between 128.6 and 3381.4 g. Females were distributed between 129.8 and 3381.4 g and males between 128.6 and 2378.4 g. The spawning periods were May to June and September. The total weight at 50% group maturity was estimated to be 919.6 g.
Monthly variation of species composition and abundance of fish eggs were examined to know the spawning time and location of the fishes inhabiting the coastal region of Jejudo Island. Samplings had been performed at the four locations (Jeju port, Seongsanpo, Seogwipo port and Chagwido) with a bongo net which was towed monthly at the sea surface from August 2006 to July 2007. The fish eggs were identified based on phylogenetic analyses with the DNA sequences generated through PCR-amplification and sequencing of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Among a total of 43 taxa classified during the study period, 34 were identified to species, 4 to families, and the remaining 5 were unidentified. Of them, 23 taxa were occurred at Jeju port, 21 at Seongsanpo, 19 at Seogwipo port and 18 at Chagwido, whereas 15 taxa were found in September 2006, 12 in June 2007, 6 to 8 in August 2006 and January~May 2007, 5 in each October and November 2006, 3 in each December 2006 and July 2007. Among 34 species of fish eggs, Engraulis japonicus and Callanthias japonicus most frequently appeared at 16 times out of 48 observations in total. When those eggs were collected, the surface seawater temperature ranged $14.0{\sim}28.6^{\circ}C$ for E. japonicus and $14.9{\sim}20.5^{\circ}C$ for C. japonicus. The success rates of PCR-amplification and species identification in this study were 68.3% and 79.1%, respectively.
Monthly samplings were made at Yongho-dong, Pusan, on the south eastern coast of Korea from May 1998 to April 1999 to investigate population growth and regeneration pattern of C. okanurae. The growth of erect branches was dependent mainly on the habitat water temperature. Maximum length of an erect branch was 13.4 cm in July and the minimum was 5.1 cm in March; during the corresponding months maximum and minimum weights of the alga were 2.2 and 0.7 g, respectively. During this investigation, gametangia did not occur. Regeneration of excised ramuli was dependent on irradiance. Regeneration rate was the highest under 50 ${\mu}$molm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ at 2$0^{\circ}C$. Under the conditions of different combinations of temperature (18, 22, 25, 28 and 1$^{\circ}C$) and irradiance (10, 20, 40, 60 and 100 ${\mu}$molm$^{-2}s$$^{-1}$) regimes, regeneration of excised erect branch was highly affected by temperature and irradiance. The highest regeneration occurred at 25 $^{\circ}C$ and 20 ${\mu}$molm$^{-2}s$$^{-1}$, whereas the highest growth in length (4.5${\pm}$1.0 cm) and fresh weight (1.2${\pm}$0.7 g) was attained after 15 days of culture.

Previous studies on zooplankton in Asan Bay were mostly based on samples collected seasonally with three months intervals. Present study was aimed to know the temporal variation of meso-zooplankton distribution using the data collected monthly. Relationships between zooplankton abundances and environmental factors such as seawater temperatures, salinities and chlorophyll-a contents were also studied. Seawater temperature showed typical pattern of seasonal variation found in temperate waters. The fluctuations of environmental factors ranged relatively wider In the inner part of the bay than those in outer part of the bay. Salinity was very low right after the summer rainy period due to the sporadic outflow of freshwater from the adjacent artificial lakes. Sudden changes in salinity seemed to have significant impact on zooplankton assemblages. Chlorophyll-a contents were increased in general when compared with previous reports probably due to the recent human exploitations in the coastal zone, which might enhance the nutrients level . The timing and duration of spring bloom showed geographical differences. In the inner part of the bay it began earlier (February) and last longer (three months) while in the outer part of the bay it began late (April) and last just one month. Zooplankton abundance, especially most abundant taxon Acartia hongi, showed weak but significant positive correlation with chlorophyll-a contents. The difference in temporal variation found with two different sampling intervals indicated the necessity of shorter time interval samplings.
