Lidocaine compounds have widely been used as local anesthetics. Regarding the molecular mechanism for anesthesia by lidocaine, it is proposed that lidocaine molecules penetrate to the hydrophobic region of cell membrane and expand the membrane volume, producing a change in protein conformation that blocks sodium permeability or lidocaine molecules directly adsorb into lidocaine receptor in the protein channel without expanding the cell membrane. But these proposals have never been proven experimentally. In this study, the expansion of cell membrane by lidocaine compounds was investigated by employing lipid monolayer at the air/water interface as the mimetic system of cell membrane. It was found that oil-soluble lidocaine contracted the area/molecule of lipid in the monolayer of phosphatidyl choline, sphingomyelin, DS-PL95E and lipoid, but expanded the monolayer of phosphatidyl ethanolamine only in a certain range of mixing ratios. On the contrary, water-soluble lidocaine-HCl salt expanded the monolayers of all lipids used in this study.

We studied chemical reactio of Eu metal on the in situ cleaved CdTe(110) surface by pphotoemission sppectroscoppy using synchrotron radiation. The chamber was maintained with base ppressure $\leq$2${\times}$10-10 mb during the expperiment. The expperiment was carried out in pphoton Factory in Jappan. Core level pphotoemission sppectroscoppy was carried out with Al K${\alpha}$ Line. The CdTe simiconductor was determined to be pp-typpe with low dopping concentration from Hall measurement. We found that there are two reacted pphases of Te with Eu (related to divalent Eu and trivalent Eu, resppectively) from least square fitting of Te 4d sppectra, but three is no indication of Cd reaction. Trivalent Eu exists after roughly one monolayer depposition (600 sec. depposition time is considered as one monolayer), which is also observed at Eu 3d core level sppectra. Overlayer Eu is metallized after roughly 2 monolayers depposition, as can be deduced from the fact that metallic edge near Fermi level begins to appear. The intensity of core-level of Te decreases expponentially at the initial stage (near one monolayer) and after one monolayer depposition it decreases more slowly due to Te out-diffusion. We categorized the growth mode of Eu on CdTe as S-K growth mode (cluster formation after one monolayer deppisition) from the relative intensity pplot of Te 4d normalized to the cleaved surface. At cleaved surface band bending is already established due to surface defects. At first 100 sec. depposition time the shift toward lower binding side by 0.6 eV is found at all core level sppectra of all elements in semiconductor. This shift is considered as the re-adjustment of surface Fermi level to the pposition induced by Eu metal (0.2 eV above the valence band maximum).
Graphene has attracted the interest of many researchers due to various its advantages such as high mobility, high transparency, and strong mechanical strength. However, large-area graphene is grown at high temperatures of about 1,000 ℃ and must be transferred to various substrates for various applications. As a result, transferred graphene shows many defects such as wrinkles/ripples and cracks that happen during the transfer process. In this study, we address transfer-free, large-scale, and high-quality monolayer graphene. Monolayer graphene was grown at low temperatures on Ti (10nm)-buffered Si (001) and PET substrates via plasma-assisted thermal chemical vapor deposition (PATCVD). The graphene area is small at low mTorr range of operating pressure, while 4 × 4 ㎠ scale graphene is grown at high working pressures from 1.5 to 1.8 Torr. Four-inch wafer scale graphene growth is achieved at growth conditions of 1.8 Torr working pressure and 150 ℃ growth temperature. The monolayer graphene that is grown directly on the Ti-buffer layer reveals a transparency of 97.4 % at a wavelength of 550 nm, a carrier mobility of about 7,000 ㎠/V×s, and a sheet resistance of 98 W/□. Transfer-free, large-scale, high-quality monolayer graphene can be applied to flexible and stretchable electronic devices.
In the present study, a human mammary epithelial cell (HMEC) culture model was developed to evaluate the potential involvement of carrier-mediated transport systems in drug transfer into milk. Trypsin-resistant HMECs were seeded on $Matrigel^{circledR}-coated$ filters to develop monolayers of functionally differentiated HMEC. Expression of the specific function of HMEC monolayers was dependent of the number of trypsin treatments. Among the monolayers with different numbers of treatment (treated 1 to 3 times), the monolayer treated 3 times (3-t-HMEC monolayer) showed the highest maximal transepithelial resistance and expression of $\beta-casein$ mRNA as an index of differentiation. Transport of tetraethylammonium (TEA) across the 3-t-HMEC monolayer in the basolateral-to-apical direction was significantly higher than that in the apical-to-basolateral direction (p<0.05), whereas such directionality was not observed for p-aminohippurate, suggesting the existence of organic cation transporters, but not organic anion transporters. In fact, expression of mRNAs of human organic cation transporter (OCT) 1 and 3 were detected in the 3-t-HMEC monolayer. These results indicate that the 3-t-HMEC monolayer is potentially useful for the evaluation of carrier-mediated secretion of drugs including organic cations into human milk.

In this study, application of SAM (self-assembled monolayer) to nano replication process as an anti-adhesion layer was presented to reduce the surface energy between the nano mold and the replicated polymeric nano patterns. The electron beam lithography was used for master nano patterns and the electorforming process was used to fabricate the nickel nano stamper. Alkanethiol SAM as an anti-adhesion layer was deposited on metallic nano stamper using solution deposition method. To analyze wettability and adhesion force of SAM, contact angle and LFM (Lateral Force Microscopy) were measured at the actual processing temperature and pressure for the case of nano compression molding and at the actual UV dose for the case of nano UV molding. It was found that the surface energy due to SAM deposition on the nickel nano stamper markedly decreased and the quality of SAM on the nickel stamper maintained under the actual molding environments.

The tribological characteristics of FDTS (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-Perflurodecyltrichlorosilane) SAM (self-assembled monolayer) and OTS (octadecyltrichlorosilane) SAM treated by high temperature annealing have been investigated from the viewpoint of stiction, adhesion and friction in micro/nano scale. From the experimental results, it was found that OTS SAM gets destroyed at 20$0^{\circ}C$ and stiction, adhesion and friction coefficient increased, but FDTS SAM was stable up to 40$0^{\circ}C$. Also, it was found that the friction coefficient of normal OTS SAM below 20$0^{\circ}C$ is lower than that of FDTS SAM in micro/nano scale, but stiction and adhesion is vice versa. This work shows the importance of surface group of self-assembled monolayer in dictating the tribological characteristics and thermal stability.

In this work, the indium zinc oxide (IZO) films had been deposited on the glass substrate coated with the SiO film. Based on a comparative investigation of the IZO monolayer and IZO/SiO multilayer, it is shown that the thickness of SiO film has a great effect on the mechanical properties of the thin films. The AFM images of the IZO thin film included the SiO film were shown smoother surfaces than monolayer. Resistivity was in inverse proportion to Mobility. If it deposited the SiO film on the substrate, the layer of change was generated between two layer(SiO and substrate). The layer of change influenced resistance because of oxygen content was more than the IZO monolayer.

Techniques measuring Maxwell displacement current (MDC) and LB films surface measuring technique have been applied to the study of monolayers of polyamic acid containing azobenzene. MDCs was generated from monolayers on the water surface by monolayer compression and expansion. It was generated when the area per molecule was about $103{\AA}^2\;and\;78{\AA}^2$ just before the initial rise of the surface pressure during the 1st and 2nd mixed monolayer compressions cycle, respectively. It was the maximum of MDCs appeared at the molecular area just before the initial rise of surface pressure in compression cycles, and we have found that the increase of aggregations causes the noticeable increase of the surface roughness.
Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the structure and stability of a nanoscale self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of alkanethiol on a gold (111) surface. The tilt angle and orientational order of the alkyl chains in the SAM island were examined by systematically varying the size of the island. The chain length dependence of the SAM island was examined by considering alkanethiols containing 12, 16, 20, and 24 carbon atoms. The minimum diameter of SAM islands made from 1-tetracosanethiol, 1-ecosanethiol, 1-hexadecanethiol and 1-dodecanethiol were 2.29, 1.9, 4.7 and 4.76 nm, respectively. These set the ultimate resolution that can be patterned by soft nanolithography. As the length of alkanethiol increases, the SAM islands became more ordered in both orientation and conformation of the alkyl chains.
Development of the methods to organize zeolite microcrystals into closely packed and uniformly aligned monolayers on various substrates have been pursued viewing microparticles as a novel class of building blocks. We now report that the vertically aligned zeolite monolayer can be applied as novel supramolecularly organized systems for anisotropic photoluminescence in high dichroic ratio, to study energy transfer dynamics between the internal and external fluorophores, and to develop zeolite-based advanced materials. Study of polarized fluorescence spectroscopy and angle-dependent intensity change with dye molecules in different surroundings further provides insight into molecular interactions that can be used for the future design of optoelectronic device in nanometer size. In addition, this report shows that isolating of organic dye through surface treatment is crucial for preventing the egress of the incorporated dye molecules from the channels of zeolite to the solution and to enhance the anisotropic luminescence.
