Nutritional genomics is a new field of study of how nutrition interacts with an individual's genome or individual responds to individual diets. Systematic approach of nutritional genomics will likely provide important clues about responders and non-responders. The current interest in personalizing health stems from the breakthroughs emerging in integrative technologies of genomics and epigenomics and the identification of genetic and epigentic diversity in individual's genetic make-up that are associated with variations in many aspects of health, including diet-related diseases. Microarray is a powerful screen system that is being also currently employed in nutritional research. Monitoring of gene expression at genome level is now possible with this technology, which allows the simultaneous assessment of the transcription of tens of thousands of genes and of their relative expression of pathological cells such tumor cells compared with that of normal cells. Epigenetic events such as DNA methylation can result in change of gene expression without involving changes in gene sequence. Recent developed technology of DNAarray-based methylation assay will facilitate wide study of epigenetic process in nutrigenomics. Some of the areas that would benefitfrom these technologies include identifying molecular targets (Biomarkers) for the risk and benefit assessment. These characterized biomarkers can reflect expose, response, and susceptibility to foods and their components. Furthermore the identified new biomarker perhaps can be utilized as a indicator of delivery system fur optimizing health.
Human tumors, including those of the hepatobiliary system, express a number of specific antigens that can be recognized by T cells, and may provide potential targets for cancer immunotherapy. Dendritic cells (DCs) are rare leucocytes that are uniquely potent in their ability to capture, process and present antigens to T cells. The ability to culture sufficient numbers of DCs from human bone marrow or blood progenitors has attracted a great deal of interest in their potential utilization in human tumor vaccination. $CD34^+$ peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) were obtained from a patient with a hepatocellular carcinoma. The PBSCs were cultured in the X-VIVO 20 medium supplemented with the Flt-3 Ligand (FL), GM-CSF, IL-4 and TNF-$\alpha$ for 12 days. The morphology and functions of the cells were examined. The generated cells had the typical morphology of DCs. When the DCs were reinjected into the same patient, an augmentation of the cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activity was observed. Concomitantly, an increase in the natural killer (NK) cell activity was also detected in the patient. These results suggest that DCs-based cancer immunotherapy may become an important treatment option for cancer patients in the future.
In order to prepare the information needed to construct a reduction system for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exhausted from ship-block paint-booths in a giant shipyard, VOCs in paint-shop airs were analyzed and compared to the components in paint thinners. Aromatic hydrocarbons containing eight and nine carbon atoms are known to be major VOC compounds found in shipyard paint-shops. The total hydrocarbon (THC(C7)) concentrations calibrated using toluene gas, were measured in block paint-shops with two photo-ionization detector (PID) meters, and the resulting THC(C7) data were converted to THC(C1) concentrations according to the Standard Methods for the Measurements of Air Pollution in South Korea. THC(C1) concentrations near the spray site ranged from 10 to 2,000 ppm, but they were less than 400 ppm near the walls of the paint-booth. The measurements of THC concentrations, based on the height of the monitoring sites, were related to the height of the target to which the spray paints were applied. The maximum concentrations occurred at almost the same height as the spray targets. When painted blocks had been dried-by warming with no spraying, the THC concentrations were 80~100 ppm.
Accurate diagnosis and proper monitoring of cancer patients remain important obstacles for successful cancer treatment. The search for cancer biomarkers can aid in more accurate prediction of clinical outcome and may also reveal novel predictive factors and therapeutic targets. One such prognostic marker seems to be FOXA1. Many studies have shown that FOXA1 is strongly expressed in a vast majority of cancers, including breast cancer, in which high expression is associated with a good prognosis. In this review, we summarize the role of this transcription factor in the development and prognosis of breast cancer in the hope of providing insights into utility of FOXA1 as a novel biomarker.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to assess the quality of spinal disease focusing on Korean medical hospital admission patients. Methods The disease code related to spinal disease was selected based on the contents of development of clinical quality indicators for spinal disease. The assessment analysis of feasibility was conducted through medical history analysis that targets spinal disease patients, current development of clinical quality indicators for spinal disease, and relevant literature. Results The indicator items of structure, process, and results were classified and selected, and so were the detailed indicator entries. After that, the appropriate reference value was chosen. The final selected quality indicators were 3 items from structure, 9 items from process, 4 items from results, including 3 monitoring items, total 16 items was chosen. Conclusions Clinical research for the adequacy assessment should be conducted and the index entry and indicators should be reassessed through an expert group discussion. Training for the evaluation indicators and association with relevant society will motivate hospitals to voluntarily improve their quality.

Cucumber leaves subjected to light chilling stress exhibit a preferential inactivation of photosystem(PS) I relative to PSII, resulting in the photoinhibition of photosynthesis. In light chilled cucumber leaves, Cu/Zn-Superoxide dismutase(SOD) is regarded as a primary target of the light chilling stress and its inactivation is closely related to the increased production of reactive oxygen species. In the present study, we further explored that inactivation of PSI in cucumber leaves is not a light chilling specific, but general to various oxidative stresses. Oxidative stress in cucumber leaves was induced by treatment of methylviologen(MV), a producer of reactive oxygen species in chloroplasts. MV treatment decreased the maximal photosynthetic O$_2$ evolution, resulting in the photoinhibition of photosynthesis. The photoinhibition of photosynthesis was attributable to the decline in PSI functionality determined in vivo by monitoring absorption changes around 820 nm. In addition, MV treatment inactivated both antioxidant enzymes Cu-Zn-superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase known sensitive to reactive oxygen species. From these results, we suggest that chloroplast antioxidant enzymes are the primary targets of photooxidative stress, followed by subsequent inactivation of PSI.
The first step in change detection in any SAR monitoring, including SAR interferometry, is the co-registration of the images. CCPs (Ground Control Points) for co-registration are usually detected manually, but for qualitative analyses of enormous volumes of data, some automation of the process will become necessary. An automated determination of common CCPs for the same path/row data is especially desirable. We selected the intersections of linear features as the candidates of common GCPs Very bright point targets, which are commonly used as GCPs, have the drawback of appearing and disappearing depending on the conditions of the observation. But in the case of linear features, some detailed elements may appear differently in some case, but the overall line-likeness will remain. In this study, we selected 18 common GCPs for a single-look JERS-1 SAR image of Omaezaki area in central Japan. Although the GCPs in the first image had to be selected either interactively or semi-automatically, the same GCPs in all other images were successively detected automatically using a tiny sub-image around each GCP and a dilated mask of each linear feature in the first image as the reference data.

Albeit the use of terrestrial 3D laser scanner (TLS) in the parts of landslide monitoring, cultural heritage documentation, civil engineering, urban engineering, etc. is increasing more and more, there is no international standardization regulation about the accuracy evaluation of the geometric element values, target, instrument calibration and test procedures, etc. Accordingly, this study deals with the manufacturing of TLS performance test target and the evaluation of TLS distance measurement and shows its suitability as the test target.

A prototype of a relativistic proton generation system, based on laser-induced plasma interaction, has been designed and fabricated. The system is composed of three major parts: a fs TW laser; a target chamber, including targets and controls; and a diagnostic system for charged particles and lasers. An Offner-type pulse stretcher for chirped pulse amplification (CPA) and eight pass pre-amplifier are installed. The main amplifier will be integrated with a new pumping laser. The design values of the laser at the first stage are 1 TW in power and 50 fs in pulse duration. We expect to generate protons with their maximum energy of approximately 3 MeV and the flux of at least $10^6$ per pulse using a 10 $\mu$m Al target. A prototype target chamber with eight 8-inch flanges, including target mounts, has been designed and fabricated. For laser diagnostics, an adaptive optics based on the Shack-Hartmann type, beam monitoring, and alignment system are all under development. For a charged particle, CR-39 detectors, a Thomson parabola spectrometer, and Si charged-particle detectors will be used for the density profile and energy spectrum. In this paper, we present the preliminary design for laser-induced proton generation. We also present plans for future work, as well as theoretical simulations.
