  • The present study investigated the effects of the moment arm length on balance and walking when carrying a backpack. In total, 30 normal adults without orthopedic and neurological injuries were assessed. For each subject, balance and gait were measured under three conditions: 1) the no backpack condition, 2) the general backpack condition, and 3) the decreased length of moment arm backpack condition. There were significant differences in the center of the pressure area and velocity between the three conditions, whereas there was no significant difference in the center of the pressure area and velocity according to the moment arm length. There were significant differences in double limb support time and walking velocity under the three conditions, and there was a significant difference only in double limb support time according to the moment arm length. The results of the present study showed that a change in the length of the moment arm can be helpful for walking when carrying a backpack.

  • In order to predict the chromatogram for organic acid in ion chromatography, Langmuir isotherm parameters were obtained by Retention Time Method (RTM) and moment method. Ion chromatography analysis for formic acid was performed and compared with theoretically predicted profiles under isocratic condition. Band profiles were estimated with the equilibrium-dispersive model of chromatography using a PDEsolver Macsyma . The relationship between the characteristics of chromatogram and the variable operating condition in chromatography such as the flow rate, ionic strength and injection volume was studied. Satisfactory agreement was observed between the experimental and the estimated chromatograms with parameters obtained form the moment method.

  • The equilibrium constants of five deoxyribonucleosides (dDyd, dUrd, dGuo, dThd, dAdo) were estimated by the plate theory and the moment method under isocratic conditions of the Reversed-Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC). The mobile phase in this system was composed of water and organic modifiers(acetonitrile and methanol) The plate theory of linear adsorption isotherm was treated on the basis of continuous flow of eluent through the plates of the column. The moment method was utilized to find the equilibrium constant from the first absolute moment of experimental data. The equilibrium constants of five deoxyribonucleosides in the two methods were very close, and also the equilibrium constants calculated by capacity factor were similar to those by both the plate theory and the moment method. The equilibrium constant was expressed as a semi-log function of the quantity of organic modifier. Excellent agreements between the calculated elusion profile by the plate theory and the experimental data were observed.

  • This paper presents an efficient face recognition method using both first moment of image and eigenvector. First moment is a method for finding centroid of image, which is applied to exclude the needless backgrounds in the face recognitions by shitting to the centroid of face image. Eigenvector which are the basis images as face features, is extracted by principal component analysis(PCA). This is to improve the recognition performance by excluding the redundancy considering to second-order statistics of face image. The proposed methods has been applied to the problem for recognizing the 60 face images(15 persons *4 scenes) of 320*243 pixels. The 3 distances such as city-block, Euclidean, negative angle are used as measures when match the probe images to the nearest gallery images. In case of the 45 face images, the experimental results show that the recognition rate of the proposed methods is about 1.6 times and its the classification is about 5.6 times higher than conventional PCA without preprocessing. The city-block has been relatively achieved more an accurate classification than Euclidean or negative angle.

  • Inelastic seismic response of steel moment frame structures, which are usually quite gravity load and subject to large displacement under severe earthquake, may be severly influenced by the structure P-Δ effects. The P-Δ effect may have an important impact on the dynamic behavior of the structure in the nonlinear seismic analysis. In multi degree of freedom systems P-Δ effects may significantly affect only a subset of stories or a single story alone. Therefore, a story drift amplification of structure is happened by P-Δeffects and such nonlinear dynamic behaviors are very difficult to evaluate in the structures. In this study, two systems having different design methods of steel moment frame structures are investigated to evaluate the P-Δ effects due to gravity load. The plastic hinge formations, maximum rotational ductility demands, and energy distribution will be compared and evaluated following whether the P-Δ effects are considered or not. And design methods are proposed for the prevention of the instability of structures which due to the P-Δ effects.

  • The moment analysis of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) was performed using chromatograms that were obtained with the pulse input method from an octadecyl silica (ODS) high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) column. The general rate (GR) model was employed to calculate the first absolute moment and the second central moment. Three important coefficients for moment analysis, which are molecular diffusivity ($D_m$), external mass transfer coefficient ($k_f$), and intra-particle diffusivity ($D_e$), were estimated by the Wilke-Chang equation, Wilson-Geankoplis equation, and comparing van Deemter equation to theoretical plate number equation, respectively. Experiments were conducted by various conditions of flow rates, methanol volume ratio of the mobile phase, and solute concentration. After the moment analysis, results were organized by van Deemter plots. Also van Deemter coefficients were compared each other to effect $H_{ax}$, $H_f$, and $H_d$ on height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP, $H_{total}$). The value of intraparticle diffusion ($H_d$) was the primary factor which makes for HETP whereas external mass transfer ($H_f$) was disregardable factor.

  • This paper presents the dynamic behaviour of a simple beam subjected to moving loads and prebending moments. The velocity of the moving loads is assumed constant, and the prebending moment is assumed to be M. The fundamental equation of motion of the beam is derived from the principle of virtual works and solved by using Duhamel's Integral. In this paper we found that the dimensionless deflection at the middle of beam was related with prebending moment(M), velocity(V) and magnitude of the moving load(F) ; that is y/y$_{0}$=1/1-.betha.$^{2}$-.pi.M/Fl The faster the velocity becomes, the deeper the maximum deflection becomes. And the maximum deflection at the middle of beam was occurred after the moving load passed the midpoint of beam.

  • The problem of outdoor localization can be practically solved by GPS. However, GPS is not perfect and some areas of outdoor navigation should consider other solutions. This research deals with outdoor localization using an elevation map without GPS. This paper proposes a novel feature, elevation moment of inertia (EMOI), which represents the distribution of elevation as a function of distance from a robot in the elevation map. Each cell of an elevation map has its own EMOI, and outdoor localization can be performed by matching EMOIs obtained from the robot and the pre-given elevation map. The experiments and simulations show that the proposed EMOI can be usefully exploited for outdoor localization with an elevation map and this feature can be easily applied to other probabilistic approaches such as Markov localization method.

  • 3-D object recognition and restoration independent of the translation and rotation using an ultrasonic sensor array, neural networks and invariant moment are presented. Using invariant moment vectors on the acquired $16{\times}8$ pixel data, 3-D objects can be classified by SOFM(Self Organizing Feature Map) neural networks. Invariant moment vectors kept constant independent of the translation and rotation. The experiment result shows the suggested method can be applied to the environment recognition.
