MoSi2-Al2O3 composites were prepared by thermal explosion mode of self-propagating high temperature syn-thesis (SHS) using element powders of MoO3 Mo Si and Al. The combustion products of MoSi2 which have 10, 20, 30 and 40 wt% Al2O3 showed the molten state in the range of Mo to MoO3 6:1-9.5:1, 2:1-8:1, 1:1-5:1, and 1:1-3:1 (molar ratio) respectively. The combustion products which made least seperation the molten phase from the slag phase were in Mo/MoO3=9, 5:1, 8:1, 5:1 and 3:1 (molar ratio) respectively. Particles size of MoSi2 and Al2O3 in the combustion product were decreased as the molar ratio of Mo to MoO3 increase. By XRD analysis only MoSi2 and $\alpha$-Al2O3 peaks were identified in the combusion products, In case of MoSi2 containing 20wt% Al2O3 5.1wt% Al existed into MoSi2 grains and 30.7wt% Si and 7.7wt% Mo existed into Al2O3 grains. The relative density of MoSi2 containing 10, 20, 30 and 40 wt% Al2O3 were 82.7, 85.2, and 81.9% respectively. The fracture strength of MoSi2-Al2O3 composites increased with increasing Al2O3 and that of MoSi2-20wt% Al2O3 composite was 195 MPa.
To enhance the performance of cathodes at low temperatures, a Cu-coated cathode is prepared, and its electrochemical performance is examined by testing its use in a single cell. At $620^{\circ}C$ and a current density of $150mAcm^{-2}$, a single cell containing the Cu-coated cathode has a significantly higher voltage (0.87 V) during the initial operation than does that with an uncoated cathode (0.79 V). According to EIS analysis, the high voltage of the cell with the Cu-coated cathode is due to the dramatic decrease in the high-frequency resistance related to electrochemical reactions. From XPS analysis, it is confirmed that the Cu is initially in the form of $Cu_2O$ and is converted into CuO after 150 h of operation, without any change in the state of the Ni or Li. Therefore, the high initial cell voltage is confirmed to be due to $Cu_2O$. Because $Cu_2O$ is catalytically active toward $O_2$ adsorption and dissociation, $Cu_2O$ on a NiO cathode enhances cell performance and reduces cathode polarization. However, the cell with the Cu-coated cathode does not maintain its high voltage because $Cu_2O$ is oxidized to CuO, which demonstrates similar catalytic activity toward $O_2$ as NiO.
Perovskite structured barium titanate particles ($BaTiO_3$) platelets were synthesized by molten salt synthesis and topochemical microcrystal conversion. As the precursors of $BaTiO_3$, plate-like $BaBi_4Ti_4O_{15}$ particles were first synthesized by the reaction of $Bi_4Ti_3O_{12}$, $BaCO_3$, and $TiO_2$ at $1080^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in $BaCl_2$-KCl molten salt. After the topochemical reactions, layer-structured $BaBi_4Ti_4O_{15}$ particles transformed to the perovskite $BaTiO_3$ platelets. $BaTiO_3$ particles with thickness of approximately $0.5{\mu}m$ and a length of $10-15{\mu}m$ retained the morphology feature of the $BaBi_4Ti_4O_{15}$ precursor. For <001> $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-32.5PbTiO_3$ (PMNT)-5 wt % PbO piezoelectric ceramics textured with 5 vol % of $BaTiO_3$ templates, the Lotgering factor reached 0.82, and $d_{33}$ was 870 pC/N.
The effect of an aluminum scrap addition ratio on the tensile and solidification cracking properties of the AC4A aluminum alloy in the as-cast state and heat-treated state were investigated in this study. Generally, the expected problem of using scrap in aluminum casting is an increase of hydrogen and Fe element inside the aluminum melt. Another issue is an oxide film which has a weak interface with the molten aluminum and acts as potent nucleation sites for internal porosity and crack initiation. Solidification cracking is one of the critical defects that must be resolved to produce high quality castings. A conventional evaluation method for solidification cracking is a relative and qualitative analysis method which does not provide quantitative data on the thermal stress in the solidification process. Therefore, a newly designed solidification cracking test apparatus was used in this study, and the device can provide quantitative data. As a result, after conducting experiments with different scrap addition ratios (0%, 20%, 35%, 50%), the tensile strengths and elongations in the as-cast state were 214, 187.7, 182.1 and 170.4MPa and 4.6%, 3.4%, 3.1% and 2.3%, respectively. In the case of the T6 heat-treated state, the tensile strengths and elongations were 314.9, 294.6, 293.1 and 271.1MPa and 5.4%, 4.6%, 3.8% and 3.1%, respectively. The strength of the solidification cracking was 3.1, 2.4, 2.2and 1.6MPa as the scrap addition ratio increases.

Mold cavities of gears should be made larger than the product specification since plastics shrink when changing from a molten to a solid state. For injection molded spur gears, two design methods for the compensation of shrinkage are widely used. One is the module correction method and the other is the pressure angle correction method. Both methods are based on the assumption that shrinkage occurs toward the center of a molded gear. This paper deals with the shrinkage rate and proposes a method of designing gear cavity derived from the measured shrinkage rates which govern the outside diameter, the tooth depth and the tooth thickness of a molded gear. The proposed method imposes no restriction on the shrinkage direction and provides a cavity with all of the fundamental gear design parameters.

First ex-vessel core catcher has been applied to the practical design of NPPs with VVER-1000 reactors built in China (Tyanvan) and India (Kudankulam) for severe accident management (SAM) and mitigation of SA consequences. The paper presents the concept and basic design of this crucible-type core catcher as well as an evaluation of its efficiency. The important role of oxidic sacrificial material is discussed. Insight into the behaviour of the molten pool, which forms in the catcher after core relocation from the reactor vessel, is provided. It is shown that heat loads on the water-cooled vessel walls are kept within acceptable limits and that the necessary margins for departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) and of vessel failure caused by thermo-mechanical stress are satisfactorily provided for.

To investigate the thermal conductivity and the structural properties of naturally cooled excimer-laser annealed Si, molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed. The thermal conductivity of crystalline Si (c-Si) was measured by direct method at 1000 K. Steady-state heat flow was measured using a stationary temperature profile; significant deviations from Fourier's law were not observed. Reliable processes for measuring the thermal conductivity of c-Si were presented. A natural cooling process to admit heat flow from molten Si (l-Si) to c-Si was performed using an MD cell with a size of $48.9{\times}48.9{\times}97.8{\AA}^3$. During the cooling process, the temperature of the bottom $10{\AA}$ of the MD cell was controlled at 300 K. The results suggest that the natural cooling system described the static structural property of amorphous Si (a-Si) well.
