This study was performed to verify the validity and utility of the Korean Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Preschool Version(BRIEF-P). The BRIEF-P is one of the most used instruments to measure Executive Function(EF) and a teacher-rating assessment method designed to measure the executive function of preschoolers(age 2-5). A total of 200 preschoolers(104 boys, 96 girls; recruited aged 3 to 5years) participated. Confirmatory factor analysis was carried out to evaluate the model structure. Correlation analysis was done to verify the concurrent validity. In the results, the model fit indexes were good with the five BRIEF-P subscales (that is, inhibit, shift, emotional control, working memory, plan/organize). The internal consistency of the BRIEF-P five subscales were supported. As a results, the Korean Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Preschool Version(BRIEF-P) was confirmed to be a reliable and valid assessment tool to measure executive function in preschoolers.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to test stage model in Traumatic Brain Injury(TBI) patients. According to the stage model, attention deficits which is basic stage in information processing lead to memory disturbance and subsequently affect higher-order cognitive function such as memory, decision-making, abstract thinking, and judgement related to executive function. Therefore, it was hypothesized that attention affect recall(retrieval efficacy) related to executive function mostly relative to other cognitive function, in TBI patients with low executive function. Methods : Participants were referred to a TBI clinic and then was rated on K-WAIS and Executive Intelligence Test(EXIT). Participants were divided into two groups according to Executive IQ(EIQ) score, which of high function group(N=67) was more than 80(above low average) and of low function group(N=52) was under 80 (under borderline). To test the stage model, using hierarchical regression analysis, recall(retrieval efficacy) was regressed on 3 subscales(attention, verbal, visuospatial scale) after controlling for IQ according to each group. Furthermore, the mediation effect of attention between retrieval efficacy and verbal, visuospatial score was analyzed. Results : In the low function group, only attention area predicted significantly recall(retrieval efficacy), indicating that lower attention were related to lower EIQ after controlling for IQ. In the high function group, no area predicted significantly retrieval efficacy. In the low function group, verbal and visuospatial scale did not predicted significantly retrieval efficacy, indicating that there was no evidences supporting the mediation model. Conclusion : Only attention affect retrieval efficacy in TBI patients with low executive function. But, the mediation effect of attention between retrieval efficacy and verbal and visuospatial scale was not tested in the low function group. These results implied that stage model was tested partially. In treating cognitive deficit in TBI patients, it is necessary to develop cognitive rehabilitation program based on stage model. Furthermore, it is necessary to necessary to test mediation model in the future study.
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among mothers' reflective function, preschoolers' empathy, executive function, caring behaviors. Subjects for this study were 498 preschoolers and their mothers. Mothers' reflective function was assessed by the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire(PRFQ). Preschoolers' empathy was assessed by the Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy(QCAE). Preschoolers' executive function was assessed by the Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Functions-Preschool Version(BRIEF-P), and caring behaviors were assessed by the caring behaviors scale(Kim, 2015). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis(CFA), and structural equation model(SEM) with the SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 23.0 program. The major results of this study were as follows. First, mothers' reflective function showed direct effects on preschoolers' empathy, executive function, and caring behaviors. Second, the preschoolers' empathy and executive function showed direct effects on preschoolers' caring behaviors. Third, preschoolers' empathy mediated the effects of mothers' reflective function on preschoolers' caring behaviors. The findings of this study will contribute to designing intervention programs to improve preschoolers' empathy, executive function, and caring behaviors.
This study examined the structural relationship between children's academic stress, grit, executive function difficulty, and media device addiction. Data on 1,132 children and their mothers from the 11th (2018)Panel Study on Korean Children were used for the study. Data were collected by Academic Stress Scale, Grit Scale-Children, Child-Adolescent Self-reported Executive Function Difficulty Screening Questionnaire, and K-Internet Addiction Scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 23.0 program with Pearson correlation, structural equation model and bootstrapping. The main results were as follows. 1) Children's academic stress had a negative influence on their grit. 2) Children's grit had a negative influence on their executive function difficulty and media device addiction. 3) Children's executive function difficulty had a positive influence on their media device addiction. 4) The relationship between children's academic stress and media device addiction was mediated by their grit and executive function difficulty. This study is significant in the sense that it found protective factors and risk factors for children's addiction to media devices. We suggest that children's grit be improved, and their academic stress and executive function difficulty be reduced to prevent and mediate children's media device addiction.
This study examined the effect of maternal cognitive empathy on children's executive function focusing on mediating effects of preschooler's caring behavior and happiness. The subject of this study was 460 five-year-old preschooler-their mother dyads in Korea. Data were collected by Korean Version of Questionnaire of Cognitive and Affective Empathy(K-QCAE), Caring Behaviors Scale for Young Children, Happiness Scale for Young Children and Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Preschool Version(BRIEF-P). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, structural equation model and bootstrapping test with SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 23.0 program. The major results were as follows. 1) Maternal cognitive empathy had a positive influence on preschooler's caring behavior. 2) Preschooler's caring behavior had a positive influence on happiness and executive function. 3) Preschooler's happiness had a positive influence on executive function. 4) The effect of maternal cognitive empathy on preschooler's executive function was mediated by preschooler's caring behavior. 5) The effect of maternal cognitive empathy on preschooler's executive function was sequentially mediated by preschooler's caring behavior and happiness. This study revealed that maternal cognitive empathy, preschooler's caring behavior, and happiness have an important role in preschooler's executive function. Most of all, we suggest that maternal cognitive empathy should be improved to promote preschooler's executive function. The findings of this study will contribute to designing intervention programs to improve preschooler's executive function as well as maternal empathy.
Household chaos, represented by high levels of disorganization and instability in the home, has been linked with suboptimal outcomes for preschoolers. The aim of this study was to examine the roles that sleep problems and executive function play in the association between household chaos and preschoolers' aggression and prosocial behavior. The sample for the study consisted of 420 preschoolers and their mothers. The mothers provided reports on the level of chaos in the home and their preschoolers' sleep problems, executive function, and social behavior, including aggression and prosocial behavior. The data was analyzed using structural equation modeling. When preschoolers' sleep problems and executive function were included in the model as mediators, the results indicated that household chaos did not have direct effects on preschoolers' aggression and prosocial behavior. Such effects were instead serially mediated by preschoolers' sleep problems and executive function, respectively. The higher the degree of household chaos, the more preschoolers displayed sleep problems and deficits in executive function, resulting in more aggression and less prosocial behavior. The findings from this study emphasize the significance of reducing household chaos in order to reduce preschoolers' aggression and promote prosocial behavior. They also underscore the need to identify additional variables that mediate the impact of household chaos on preschoolers' social outcomes.
Background and objective: This study identifies whether children's planning-organizing executive function can be significantly classified and predicted by home environment quality and wealth factors. Methods: For empirical analysis, we used the data collected from the 10th Panel Study on Korean Children in 2017. Using machine learning tools such as support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF), we evaluated the accuracy of the model in which home environment factors classify and predict children's planning-organizing executive functions, and extract the relative importance of variables that determine these executive functions by income group. Results: First, SVM analysis shows that home environment quality and wealth factors show high accuracy in classification and prediction in all three groups. Second, RF analysis shows that estate had the highest predictive power in the high-income group, followed by income, asset, learning, reinforcement, and emotional environment. In the middle-income group, emotional environment showed the highest score, followed by estate, asset, reinforcement, and income. In the low-income group, estate showed the highest score, followed by income, asset, learning, reinforcement, and emotional environment. Conclusion: This study confirmed that home environment quality and wealth factors are significant factors in predicting children's planning-organizing executive functions.

This paper finds some stylized facts about executive pay in South Korea. Using aggregate data of the listed companies since 2002, we find that 1) the director's remuneration has risen faster than the employee compensation, thus, the pay ratio of executive and employee has escalated from 3.0 to 4.5; 2) the executive compensation for large business group fluctuates more widely than that for small and medium enterprises does, hence the pay ratio for large firms changes widely too; 3) the median pay ratio has not grown monotonically but it rather rises to remain still around year 2011, which is accounted for mostly by small and medium enterprises. New information on executive compensation by compulsory disclosure starting from 2013 made further analysis of CEO compensation attainable. Based on the conventional regression analysis for 2013-2017, we find that 1) the elasticity of CEO pay with respect to firm value is about 0.18; 2) the volatility of stock return is negatively related to CEO pay; 3) contemporaneous stock return is positively associated with the pay; 4) there is insufficient evidence that large business groups pay their CEOs more than small and medium enterprises do. These results are robust under various model specifications.

This study examined the longitudinal effects of media usage by early school-age children and of maternal parenting stress on children's school adjustment. The study focused on the mediating effect of executive function difficulty. Longitudinal data to examine the hypothetical model were drawn from the eighth (2015) through tenth (2017) waves of the Panel Study of Korean Children (PSKC) collected by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education (KICCE). A total of 581 children (293 boys and 288 girls) and their mothers were included. Confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation model, and bootstrapping analysis were applied using SPSS 25.0 and Amos 26.0. The results are as follows. First, no significant correlation was found between early school-age children's media usage and maternal parenting stress. Second, neither media usage by early school-age children nor maternal parenting stress were found to directly affect children's school adjustment. Third, media usage by early school-age children and maternal parenting stress were shown to indirectly affect children's school adjustment via executive function difficulties. In other words, higher levels of media usage by early school-age children and maternal parenting stress during the first grade lead to greater executive function difficulties after a year, which, in turn, lead to a lower level of school adjustment in the third grade. This study indicates the need to develop practical support for the psychological wellbeing of mothers while they are performing their role as a parent and for children in maintaining suitable levels of media usage during early childhood.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the moderated-moderated mediating effects of children's media content selection and parental restrictive media mediation on the relationship between children's screen media time and executive function difficulties. Methods: A total of 693 parents of children aged 5~6 years participated in this study and were asked to answer all survey questions. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and correlation analysis using SPSS 27.0. Model 11 of PROCESS macro 4.3 was used to examine the moderated-moderated mediation model. Children's gender, age, childcare enrollment status, and household income were included in the analyses as covariates. Results: The moderated-moderated mediating effects of children's media content selection and parental restrictive media mediation were found to be significant. Specifically, bedtime mediated the relationship between screen media time and executive function difficulties only when parents did not appropriately implement restrictive mediation and children freely selected media content. Conclusion/Implications: It is recommended that parents understand the importance of implementing restrictive media mediation and selecting appropriate media contents for their child to prevent executive function difficulties in early childhood. Also, child education or day-care centers should offer education program about appropriate media use to reach more parents.
