Math Mobile Applications Affect Arithmetic Fluency and Learning Motivation of Underachieving Students in Math (수학 모바일 애플리케이션이 수학 학습부진아동의 연산 유창성과 수학 학습동기에 미치는 영향)

  • In this research, we investigated the effect of arithmetic learning utilizing mathematical mobile application on arithmetic fluency and learning motivation of underachieving students in math. 24 4th grade math underachievers were divided into control and experimental groups. Arithmetic learning utilizing mathematical mobile application was conducted for experimental group and arithmetic learning utilizing learning worksheets was conducted for comparative group. After three weeks, the experimental group showed increase in math fluency and motivation compared to control group. Implications are discussed.

  • With the development of computer technology, many different kinds of digital design tools have been developed and used. In the circumstance, methodologies of digital process have more been researched. Despite various atypical forms, there have been limits to the application and practical use of the mobile technology for approaches to the creation of architectural forms and various circumstances. Therefore, this study tries to analyze previous studies and actual conditions of mobile application in order to recognize the research necessity and suggest the possibility of the atypical form creation in the mobile environment. In short, the purpose of this study is to recognize the necessity of the smart mobile application for making idea & learning tools, suggest the process based selective application method (not analytical application) of smart mobile application technology to make possible atypical form creation in the initial step of architectural design processes, and propose a new method of mobile application.

Development of a English Vocabulary Context-Learning Agent based on Smartphone (스마트폰 기반 영어 어휘 상황학습 에이전트 개발)

  • Recently, mobile application for english vocabulary learning is being developed actively. However, most mobile English vocabulary learning applications did not effectively connected with the technical advantages of mobile learning. Also,the study of mobile english vocabulary learning app are still insufficient. Therefore, this paper development a english vocabulary context-learning Agent that can practice context learning more reasonably using a location-based service, a character recognition technology and augmented reality technology based on smart phones. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed agent, we have measured the precision and usability. As results of experiments, the precision of learning vocabulary is 89% and 'Match between system and the real world', 'User control and freedom', 'Recognition rather than recall', 'Aesthetic and minimalist design' appeared to be respectively 3.91, 3.80, 3.85, 4.01 in evaluation of usability. It were obtained significant results.

  • Given the potential of mobile applications to create new learning opportunities beyond the prevalent use of digital textbooks and Internet lectures, this study aims to derive types and themes of mobile application content that can be effectively integrated with the school curricula. Twenty primary school teachers participated in this study that examines teachers' perceptions about the advantages and disadvantages of printed and digital textbooks' modality, the advantages and disadvantages of mobile learning, and the themes relevant to develop mobile applications. Findings indicate that it is necessary to develop activity-centered applications for vertical use rather than theme-centered applications for horizontal use. In addition, while most ideas derived from teachers center on multimedia access, there was lack of ideas that leverage the affordances of mobile devices for collaborative interaction and location-awareness. Lastly, to promote the diffusion of mobile learning in school environments, this study suggests the need to overcome teachers' epistemology that perceives mobilization against inquiry activities.

  • The present study aims to design an application for anger control training of individuals and test its practical usability with the goal of encouraging preventive training in daily life. This study also investigates, through usability evaluation, whether users can use the application to carry out the actual anger management training program, whether it is useful and convenient, and whether it produces adequate learning effects. In order to conduct usability evaluation, a usability evaluation scale comprised of six factors-utility, reuse intention, learning, error, and reflectivity-was derived, and survey items tailored to each factor were produced. The association between usability evaluation elements, user demographic parameters, mobile usage behavior, and state anger was also examined. The result demonstrated that additional menus and features are necessary to increase the usability of the application for anger management. The result also revealed that it is vital to build an intuitive application interface that users unfamiliar with mobile app functionality can easily navigate, as well as to add entertaining components in the content, as users may be somewhat bored. On the basis of the findings, ideas of modifying and creating anger management training programs were discussed.

  • An effective integration of web-based learning environment and mobile device technology is considered as a new challenge to the developers. The screen size, however, of the mobile device is too small, and its performance is too inferior. Due to the foregoing limit of mobile technology, displaying bulk data on the mobile screen, such as a cyber lecture accompanied with real-time image transmission on the web, raises a lot of problems. Users have difficulty in recognizing learning contents exactly by means of a mobile device, and continuous transmission of video stream with bulky information to the mobile device arouses a lot of load for the mobile system. Thus, an application which is developed to be applied in PC is improper to be used for the mobile device as it is, a player which is fitting for the mobile device should be developed. Accordingly, this paper suggests mobile presentation using transcoding techniques of the field concerned. To display continuous video frames of learning image, such as a cyber lecture or remote lecture, by means of a mobile device, the performance difference between high-resolution digital image and mobile device should be surmounted. As the transcoding techniques to settle the performance difference causes damage of image quality, high-quality image may be guaranteed by application of trial and error between transcoding and selected learning resources.

  • Facial expression recognition plays a significant role in understanding human emotional states. With the advancement of AI and computer vision technologies, extensive research has been conducted in various fields, including improving customer service, medical diagnosis, and assessing learners' understanding in education. In this study, we develop a model that can infer emotions in real-time from a webcam using transfer learning with TensorFlow.js and MobileNet. While existing studies focus on achieving high accuracy using deep learning models, these models often require substantial resources due to their complex structure and computational demands. Consequently, there is a growing interest in developing lightweight deep learning models and transfer learning methods for restricted environments such as web browsers and edge devices. By employing MobileNet as the base model and performing transfer learning, our study develops a deep learning transfer model utilizing JavaScript-based TensorFlow.js, which can predict emotions in real-time using facial input from a webcam. This transfer model provides a foundation for implementing facial expression recognition in resource-constrained environments such as web and mobile applications, enabling its application in various industries.

  • As the distribution rate of a smart phone which can actualize even augmented reality is getting higher, the application scope of a smart phone is sharply increasing. However, in spite of various functions of it, there is still lack of learning app. Mobile equipments can bring no spatial-temporal restriction of learning to a learner, but they can tempt a learner into inappropriate spaces. In this sense, learning app is necessarily needed to motivate and keep learner's inner desire. This thesis suggested considerations when learning mobile app is designed by analyzing motivation strategy of ARCS Theory and UI of web based contents. Also, a design method of mobile learning app was suggested based on a procedural model of mobile learning app adapting ARCS Theory.

  • This paper implements a smartphone application for sound recording and player of mobile learning. Due to its ubiquitous nature, smartphones could be used anytime anywhere, and because they combine an audio and a microphone, the application for sound recording and player that this paper suggests can be easily and cost effectively developed without additional infrastructure. This paper also explains a technique which processes data of music lyrics. The technique is built on a database technology by using SQLite, a DBMS combined in a platform of android. Thus, as long as the smartphone application for sound recording and player is developed and the mobile phone has sound source files, learners could record their own voices to the sound. Therefore, we expect the learners without additional infrastructure to enable mobile learning.

Mobile Application for Real-Time Monitoring of Concentration Based on fNIRS (fNIRS 기반 실시간 집중력 모니터링 모바일 애플리케이션)

  • Learning assistance system that continuously measures user's concentration will be helpful to grasp the concentration pattern and adjust the learning method accordingly to improve the learning efficiency. Although a lot of various learning aids have been proposed, there have been few studies on the concentration monitoring system in real time. Therefore, in this study, we developed an Android-based mobile application that can measure concentration during study by using functional near-infrared spectroscopy, which is used to measure brain activity. First, the task accuracy was predicted at a maximum level of 93.75% from the prefrontal oxygenation characteristics measured while performing the visual Q&A task on 11 college students, and a concentration calculation formula based on a linear regression model was derived. Then, a survey on the usability of the mobile application was conducted, overall high satisfaction and positive opinions were obtained. From these findings, this application can be used as a customized learning aid application for users, and further, it can help educators improve the quality of classes based on the level of concentration of learners.
