In this paper, we propose a novel positioning system for indoor navigation which helps a user navigate easily to desired destinations in an unfamiliar indoor environment using his mobile phone. The system requires only the user's mobile phone with its basic equipped sensors such as a camera and a compass. The system tracks user's positions and orientations using a vision-based approach that utilizes $360^{\circ}$ panoramic images captured in the environment. To improve the robustness of the vision-based method, we exploit a digital compass that is widely installed on modern mobile phones. This hybrid solution outperforms existing mobile phone positioning methods by reducing the error of position estimation to around 0.7 meters. In addition, to enable the proposed system working independently on mobile phone without the requirement of additional hardware or external infrastructure, we employ a modified version of a fast and robust feature matching scheme using Histogrammed Intensity Patch. The experiments show that the proposed positioning system achieves good performance while running on a mobile phone with a responding time of around 1 second.

In order to guide the robots move along a collision-free path efficiently and reach the goal position quickly in the unknown multi-obstacle environment, this paper presented the navigation problem of a wheel mobile robot based on proximity sensors by fuzzy logic controller. Then a genetic algorithm was applied to optimize the membership function of input and output variables and the rule base of the fuzzy controller. Here the environment is unknown for the robot and contains various types of obstacles. The robot should detect the surrounding information by its own sensors only. For the special condition of path deadlock problem, a wall following method named angle compensation method was also developed here. The simulation results showed a good performance for navigation problem of mobile robots.

In this paper, we propose a multisensor-based navigation algorithm for a mobile robot, which is intelligently searching the goal location in unknown dynamic environments using multi-ultrasonic sensor. Instead of using “sensor fusion” method which generates the trajectory of a robot based upon the environment model and sensory data, “command fusion” method by fuzzy inference is used to govern the robot motions. The major factors for robot navigation are represented as a cost function. Using the data of the robot states and the environment, the weight value of each factor using fuzzy inference is determined for an optimal trajectory in dynamic environments. For the evaluation of the proposed algorithm, we performed simulations in PC as well as experiments with IRL-2002. The results show that the proposed algorithm is apt to identify obstacles in unknown environments to guide the robot to the goal location safely.

This paper addresses a formation navigation issue for a group of mobile robots passing through an environment with either static or moving obstacles meanwhile keeping a fixed formation shape. Based on Lyapunov function and graph theory, a NN formation control is proposed, which guarantees to maintain a formation if the formation pattern is $C^k,\;k\geq1$. In the process of navigation, the leader can generate a proper trajectory to lead formation and avoid moving obstacles according to the obtained information. An evolutionary computational technique using particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed for motion planning so that the formation is kept as $C^1$ function. The simulation results demonstrate that this algorithm is effective and the experimental studies validate the formation ability of the multiple mobile robots system.
Obstacle avoidance is a basic skill to make a mobile robot move effectively and safely even in any arbitrarily given environment. Because of the difficulty of self-location caused by unavoidable slip and drift errors of sensors and effective detection of any encountered obstacle, only finite and simple obstacle avoidance strategies can be carried out. In this paper we mainly explored how to make a robot perform effectively obstacle detection and avoidance in the guideline navigation with one CCD video camera and some supersonic sensors. Making use of the specially designed guideline, the detection and calculation of the geometric dimensions of the encountered obstacle became simpler. And possible avoidance strategies appropriate to our navigation were studied and the simulations results were given.
Low-cost sensors have been widely used for mobile robot navigation in recent years. However, navigation performance based on low-cost sensors is not good enough to be practically used. Among many navigation techniques, building of an accurate map is a fundamental task for service robots, and mapping with low-cost IR sensors was investigated in this research. The robot's orientation uncertainty was considered for mapping by modifying the Bayesian update formula. Then, the data association scheme was investigated to improve the quality of a built map when the robot's pose uncertainty was large. Six low-cost IR sensors mounted on the robot could not give rich data enough to align the range data by the scan matching method, so a new sample-based method was proposed for data association. The real experiments indicated that the mapping method proposed in this research was able to generate a useful map for navigation.
In this paper, we propose a new approach to autonomous wall-following of wheeled mobile robots using hybrid control system. The hybrid control approach IS introduced to the motion control of nonholonomic mobile robots in the Indoor navigation problems. In hybrid control architecture, the discrete states are defined by the user-defined constraints, and the reference motion commands are specified In the abstracted motions. The hybrid control system applied to motion planning and autonomous navigation with obstacle avoidance In indoor navigation problem. Simulation results show that it is an effective method for the autonomous navigation in indoor environments.
In this paper, a parameter optimization technique for a mobile robot navigation is discussed. Authors already have proposed a navigation algorithm for mobile robots with sonar sensors using fuzzy decision making theory. Fuzzy decision making selects the optimal via-point utilizing membership values of each via-point candidate for fuzzy navigation goals. However, to make a robot successfully navigate through an unknown and cluttered environment, one needs to adjust parameters of membership function, thus changing shape of MF, for each fuzzy goal. Furthermore, the change in robot configuration, like change in sensor arrangement or sensing range, invokes another adjusting of MFs. To accomplish an intelligent way to adjust these parameters, we adopted a genetic algorithm, which does not require any formulation of the problem, thus more appropriate for robot navigation. Genetic algorithm generates the fittest parameter set through crossover and mutation operation of its string representation. The fitness of a parameter set is assigned after a simulation run according to its time of travel, accumulated heading angle change and collision. A series of simulations for several different environments is carried out to verify the proposed method. The results show the optimal parameters can be acquired with this method.

This paper presents an implementation of autonomous navigation of a mobile robot indoors. It explains methods for map building, localization, obstacle avoidance and path planning. Geometric map is used for localization and path planning. The localization method calculates sensor data based on the map for comparison with the real sensor data. Monte Carlo Localization(MCL) method is adopted for estimation of the robot position. For obstacle avoidance, an artificial potential field generates repulsive and attractive force to the robot. Dijkstra algorithm plans the shortest distance path from a start position to a goal point. The methods integrate into autonomous navigation method and implemented for indoor navigation. The experiments show that the proposed method works well for safe autonomous navigation.

Various robot platforms have been designed and developed to perform given tasks in a hazardous environment for the purpose of surveillance, reconnaissance, search and rescue, and etc. We have considered a terrain adaptive hybrid robot platform which is equipped with rapid navigation on flat floors and good performance on overcoming stairs or obstacles. Since our special consideration is posed to its flexibility for real application, we devised a design of a transformable robot structure which consists of an ordinary wheeled structure to navigate fast on flat floor and a variable tracked structure to climb stairs effectively. Especially, track arms installed in front side, rear side, and mid side are used for navigation mode transition between flatland navigation and stairs climbing. The mode transition is determined and implemented by adaptive driving mode control of mobile robot. The wheel and track hybrid mobile platform apparatus applied off-road driving mechanism for various professional service robots is verified through experiments for navigation performance in real and test-bed environment.
