  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been developing one mobile and one stationary SLR system since 2008 named as ARGO-M and ARGO-F, respectively. KASI finished the step of deriving the system requirements of ARGO. The requirements include definitions and scopes of various software and hardware components which are necessary for developing the ARGO-M operation system. And the requirements define function, performance, and interface requirements. The operation system consisting of ARGO-M site, ARGO-F site, and Remote Operation Center (ROC) inside KASI is designed for remote access and the automatic tracking and control system which are the main operation concept of ARGO system. To accomplish remote operation, we are considering remote access to ARGO-F and ARGO-M from ROC. The mobile-phone service allows us to access the ARGO-F remotely and to control the system in an emergency. To implement fully automatic tracking and control function in ARGO-F, we have investigated and described the requirements about the automatic aircraft detection system and the various meteorological sensors. This paper addresses the requirements of ARGO Operation System.

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute has been developing one mobile satellite laser ranging system named as accurate ranging system for geodetic observation-mobile (ARGO-M). Preliminary design of ARGO-M operation system (AOS) which is one of the ARGO-M subsystems was completed in 2009. Preliminary design results are applied to the following development phase by performing detailed design with analysis of pre-defined requirements and analysis of the derived specifications. This paper addresses the preliminary design of the whole AOS. The design results in operation and control part which is a key part in the operation system are described in detail. Analysis results of the interface between operation-supporting hardware and the control computer are summarized, which is necessary in defining the requirements for the operation-supporting hardware. Results of this study are expected to be used in the critical design phase to finalize the design process.

  • This paper proposes a space-polarization division multiple access (SPDMA) system that has limited feedback channels. The system simultaneously serves data streams to multiple mobile users through dual-polarized antenna arrays, by using pre-determined sets of precoding vectors that are orthogonal in both space and polarization domains. To this end, a codebook whose elements are sets of the precoding vectors is systematically designed based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix and considering the power imbalance of polarized channels. Throughput of the SPDMA system is evaluated and compared to that of space division multiple access (SDMA) system, according to the various parameters including cross polarization discrimination (XPD). The results show that the throughput of SPDMA system outperforms that of SDMA in the environments of high XPD with many mobile users.

  • This paper proposed a new technology to control a path forging parts in limited narrow space of manufacturing process automation for smart factory. In the motion control, we adapted the obstacle avoidance technology based on ultrasonic sensors. The new motion control performance test for a mobile robot is experimented in narrow space environments. The travelling path control is performed by a fuzzy control logic. which plays a role for selecting an appropriate behavior in accordance with the situation in the vicinity of the mobile robot. Ultrasonic sensors installed at the front face of the mobile robot are used. In order to update the current position and heading angle of the mobile robot, a new approch is adapted. The reliability is illustrated by simulation and experiments.

  • This paper proposes an efficient and yet powerful local descriptor called phase-space partition based descriptor (PPD). This descriptor is designed for the mobile image matching and retrieval. PPD, which is inspired from SIFT, also encodes the salient aspects of the image gradient in the neighborhood around an interest point. However, without employing SIFT's smoothed gradient orientation histogram, we apply the region based gradient statistics in phase space to the construction of a feature representation, which allows to reduce much computation requirements. The feature matching experiments demonstrate that PPD achieves favorable performance close to that of SIFT and faster building and matching. We also present results showing that the use of PPD descriptors in a mobile image retrieval application results in a comparable performance to SIFT.

  • High temperature and high pressure heavy water flows through the pipes in atomic power plants. The curved parts of pipes are critical parts in that they change the direction of steam flow, and these parts are especially affected by severe wear. Therefore, most pipes in atomic power plants are tested by non-destructive examination by workers who use ultrasonic sensors to measure the wall thickness of pipes. But not only are these pipes located in a very dangerous environment, but the space is also very limited. For the safety of workers, it is necessary to design a device that uses a mobile robot that can inspect curved pipes. This paper presents the design and construction of a small device that can generate the necessary contact forces between ultrasonic sensors and pipe walls in a limited space. And a mobile robot is used in place ortho worker for successful non-destructive examination.

  • Q-learning, based on discrete state and action space, is a most widely used reinforcement Learning. However, this requires a lot of memory and much time for learning all actions of each state when it is applied to a real mobile robot navigation using continuous state and action space Region-based Q-learning is a reinforcement learning method that estimates action values of real state by using triangular-type action distribution model and relationship with its neighboring state which was defined and learned before. This paper proposes a new Region-based Q-learning which uses a reward assigned only when the agent reached the target, and get out of the Local optimal path with adjustment of random action rate. If this is applied to mobile robot navigation, less memory can be used and robot can move smoothly, and optimal solution can be learned fast. To show the validity of our method, computer simulations are illusrated.

  • Due to the rapid performance improvement of smartphones, multitasking on mobile platforms has become an essential feature. Unlike traditional desktop or server environments, mobile applications are mostly interactive jobs where response time is important, and some applications are classified as real-time jobs with deadlines. When interactive and real-time jobs run concurrently, memory allocation between multitasking applications is a challenging issue as they have different time requirements. In this paper, we study how to allocate memory space when real-time and interactive jobs are simultaneously executed in a smartphone to meet the multitasking requirements between heterogeneous jobs. Specifically, we analyze the memory size required to satisfy the constraints of real-time jobs and present a new model for allocating memory space between heterogeneous multitasking jobs. Trace-driven simulations show that the proposed model provides reasonable performance for interactive jobs while guaranteeing the requirement of real-time jobs.

  • Robots will be able to coexist with humans and support humans effectively in near future. One of the most important aspects in the development of human-friendly robots is to cooperation between humans and robots. In this paper, we proposed a method for multi-object identification in order to achieve such human-centered system and robot localization in intelligent space. The intelligent space is the space where many intelligent devices, such as computers and sensors, are distributed. The Intelligent Space achieves the human centered services by accelerating the physical and psychological interaction between humans and intelligent devices. As an intelligent device of the Intelligent Space, a color CCD camera module, which includes processing and networking part, has been chosen. The Intelligent Space requires functions of identifying and tracking the multiple objects to realize appropriate services to users under the multi-camera environments. In order to achieve seamless tracking and location estimation many camera modules are distributed. They causes some errors about object identification among different camera modules. This paper describes appearance based object representation for the distributed vision system in Intelligent Space to achieve consistent labeling of all objects. Then, we discuss how to learn the object color appearance model and how to achieve the multi-object tracking under occlusions.
