The Effects of Several Types of Bibimbabs on Immune Activities in Mice (여러 가지 비빔밥의 섭취가 생쥐의 각종 면역 활성에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of several types of bibimbab (a Korean traditional meal of mixed rice with assorted vegetables), on various immune activities. Compared to control animals in a mouse model (given hamburgers), the oral administration of a portion of bibimbab containing wild plants significantly increased splenic B/T, thymic Th lymphocyte subpopulations, serum IFN-${\gamma}$ production, and enhanced hemagglutination titers up to 300%. Also, a consumption of mushroom-bulgogi bibimbab and Jeonju-style bibimbab markedly decreased compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylaxis (immediate hypersensitivity), while bibimbab with wild plants inhibited SRBC-induced delayed type hypersensitivity. These results suggest that bibimbab with wild plants both up-regulate on immune activities and have anti-allergenic properties.

Prevalence, Risk Factors and Consequent Effect of Dystocia in Holstein Dairy Cows in Iran

  • The objective of this research was to determine the prevalence, risk factors and consequent effect of dystocia on lactation performance in Holstein dairy cows in Iran. The data set consisted of 55,577 calving records on 30,879 Holstein cows in 30 dairy herds for the period March 2000 to April 2009. Factors affecting dystocia were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression models through the maximum likelihood method in the GENMOD procedure. The effect of dystocia on lactation performance and factors affecting calf birth weight were analyzed using mixed linear model in the MIXED procedure. The average incidence of dystocia was 10.8% and the mean (SD) calf birth weight was 42.13 (5.42) kg. Primiparous cows had calves with lower body weight and were more likely to require assistance at parturition (p<0.05). Female calves had lower body weight, and had a lower odds ratio for dystocia than male calves (p<0.05). Twins had lower birth weight, and had a higher odds ratio for dystocia than singletons (p<0.05). Cows which gave birth to a calf with higher weight at birth experienced more calving difficulty (OR (95% CI) = 1.1(1.08-1.11). Total 305-d milk, fat and protein yield was 135 (23), 3.16 (0.80) and 6.52 (1.01) kg less, in cows that experienced dystocia at calving compared with those that did not (p<0.05).

Genetic Relationships of Carcass Traits with Retail Cut Productivity of Hanwoo Cattle

  • This study aimed to estimate genetic correlation between carcass grading and retail productivity traits and to estimate the correlated response on retail productivity traits through selection for carcass grading traits in order to assess the efficacy of indirect selection. Genetic parameters were estimated with the data from 4240 Hanwoo steers using mixed models, and phenotypes included carcass weight (CWT), back fat thickness (BFT), eye muscle area (EMA), marbling (MAR), and estimated lean yield percentage (ELP) as the carcass grading traits, and weight and portion of retail cuts (RCW and RCP), trimmed fats (TFW and TFP) and trimmed bones (TBW and TBP) as the lean productivity traits. The CWT had positive genetic correlations with RCW (0.95) and TFW (0.73), but its genetic correlation with RCP was negligible (0.02). The BFT was negatively correlated with RCP (-0.63), but positively correlated with TFW and TFP (0.77 and 0.70). Genetic correlations of MAR with TFW and TFP were low. Among the carcass grading traits, only EMA was positively correlated with both RCW (0.60) and RCP (0.72). The EMA had a relatively strong negative genetic correlation with TFW (-0.64). The genetic correlation coefficients of ELP with RCP, TFW, and TFP were 0.76, -0.90, and -0.82, respectively. These correlation coefficients suggested that the ELP and EMA might be favorable traits in regulating lean productivity of carcass.

  • This research aimed to design and develop a mobile-website mixed business model and smartphone based mobile application for the purpose of mobile fashion content distribution. We have implemented a mobile interface and trading system supporting self production of content, use, share, and user's self-up. And we proposed its market access strategy for the expansion of fashion contents transactions. To do this, the existing status of research and benchmarking for mobile app of fashion contents related were studied. As a result of the study, Android, iOS-based mobile applications were developed, but there are some business problems such as low awareness, low entry barriers, and the poor fashion content compared to the size of industry. Because this system provide the fashion contents of affiliated companies to users, it needs to expand cooperation and to promote the partnership with fashion blog, cafes, and fashion magazines.

Simulation Model of Dual-Species Biofilm Growth in Hydrodynamic Flow (유체 흐름 안에서 두 종의 생물막 성장 시뮬레이션 모델)

  • In rivers and streams, biofilms are thin layers of greenish-brown slime attached to rocks, plants, and other surfaces. Biofilms play key roles in primary production and cycling of nutrients, water quality remediation, suspended sediment removal, and energy flow to higher trophic levels. In the present study, we developed a two-dimensional cellular automata model to simulate mixed biofilms of toxin-sensitive and toxin-producing species in hydrodynamic flow. The flow was generated by a stochastic process for uniform flow and by using the Navier-Stokes equation for non-uniform flow. Minimized local rules governing reproduction and mortality of the species were executed in the self-organizing processes to elucidate interactions between toxin-producing and toxin-sensitive species in competition over nutrients. We briefly discuss the morphology of the simulated biofilm under different flow conditions.

  • The focus on the issues surrounding spent nuclear fuel and lifetime extension of old nuclear power plants continues to grow nowadays. A transparent decision-making process to identify the best suitable nuclear fuel cycle (NFC) is considered to be the key task in the current situation. Through this study, an attempt is made to develop an equilibrium model for the NFC to calculate the material flows based on 1 TWh of electricity production, and to perform integrated multicriteria decision-making method analyses via the analytic hierarchy process technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution, preference ranking organization method for enrichment evaluation, and multiattribute utility theory methods. This comparative study is aimed at screening and ranking the three selected NFC options against five aspects: sustainability, environmental friendliness, economics, proliferation resistance, and technical feasibility. The selected fuel cycle options include pressurized water reactor (PWR) once-through cycle, PWR mixed oxide cycle, or pyroprocessing sodium-cooled fast reactor cycle. A sensitivity analysis was performed to prove the robustness of the results and explore the influence of criteria on the obtained ranking. As a result of the comparative analysis, the pyroprocessing sodium-cooled fast reactor cycle is determined to be the most competitive option among the NFC scenarios.

A Study on Throughput Increase in Semiconductor Package Process of K Manufacturing Company Using a Simulation Model (시뮬레이션 모델을 이용한 K회사 반도체 패키지 공정의 생산량 증가를 위한 연구)

  • K company produces semiconductor package products under the make-to-order policy to supply for domestic and foreign semiconductor manufacturing companies. Its production process is a machine-paced assembly line type, which consists of die sawing, assembly, and test. This paper suggests three plans to increase process throughput based on the process analysis of K company and evaluates them via a simulation model using a real data collected. The three plans are line balancing by adding machines to the bottleneck process, product group scheduling, and reallocation of the operators in non-bottleneck processes. The evaluation result shows the highest daily throughput increase of 17.3% with an effect of 2.8% reduction of due date violation when the three plans are applied together. Payback period for the mixed application of the three plans is obtained as 1.37 years.

Effects of Replacing Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) Hay with Fresh Citrus Pulp on Ruminal Fermentation and Ewe Performance

  • Two studies were conducted to determine the effects of replacing 30% (% in diet DM) of lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) hay with citrus pulp in Merino ewe diets: i) an in vitro study which measured ruminal fermentation; and ii) an in vivo study in which twelve Merino ewes pre- and post-lambing were fed experimental diets in a cross-over design over 120 days to evaluate effects on ewe performance (i.e. DM intake, average daily gain (ADG) and wool growth). In both the in vitro and in vivo studies, the control treatment consisted of lucerne (91.3% in diet DM), lupins (8.3% in diet DM) and phosphate (0.42% in diet DM), while the citrus pulp treatment consisted of lucerne (57.7% in diet DM), lupins (9.5% in diet DM), phosphate (0.48% in diet DM) and fresh citrus pulp (32.3% in diet DM). Data were analysed using the mixed model procedure of SAS. In the in vitro study, gas production, total volatile fatty acid (VFA) yield, proportion of propionic acid to total VFA and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) were higher (p<0.02) in the citrus pulp treatment compared to the control treatment. In contrast, in vitro ammonia production, pH and the acetate to propionate ratio were lower (p<0.03) for the citrus pulp treatment compared to the control treatment. In the in vivo study, DM intake of ewes fed the citrus pulp diet was lower than their control ewe counterparts throughout both the pre- and post-lambing periods (928.9 vs. 1,115.0 g/d pre-; 1,285.0 vs. 1,620.3 g/d post-lambing, p<0.01), however ADG was similar (p = 0.12). Wool growth parameters and lamb performance did not differ (p>0.32) between treatments. In summary, the in vitro study demonstrated that the replacement of 30% of a lucerne diet with fresh citrus pulp improved total VFA yield, increased total gas production and improved IVDMD, while decreasing the production of ammonia, acetic acid and rumen pH. In addition, the in vivo study demonstrated that the replacement of 30% of a lucerne diet with fresh citrus pulp pre- and post-lambing decreased intake but did not affect ewe performance in terms of ADG and wool growth. These findings, of course, would be of significant interest to sheep producers endeavouring to control cost of feed ingredients whilst maintaining productivity.

ESTIMATES OF PHENOTYPIC AND GENETIC PARAMETERS FOR WEANING AND YEARLING WEIGHTS IN BALI BEEF CATTLE

  • Records on weaning (3803) and yearling weight (2990) of beef cattle (Bibos banteng) from the Bali Cattle Improvement Project were examined. A mixed model analysis involving all main non-genetic effects (village, year of birth, season of birth, age of dam, sex of calf, all significant interactions and age at weighing as a covariate) as fixed effects and sire nested within village as a random effect was undertaken. Variance components were estimated by Henderson's Method III. Paternal half-sib components of variance and covariance were used to estimate heritabilities of weaning and yearling weights, as well as their genetic and phenotypic correlations. Heritability estimates ($\pm$ standard error) obtained by Henderson's Method III for weaning and yearling weights were $.11{\pm}.03$ and $.13{\pm}.04$, respectively while the phenotypic and genetic correlations were estimated as .32 and $.64{\pm}.10$, respectively. The parameters estimated in this study were at the lower end of the range of reported values from various breeds. It is concluded that further information should be gathered to assist in estimating genetic parameters for other economic traits of Bali beef cattle and to provide more accurate estimates for weaning and yearling weights. These parameters should then be used to formulate a selection program to enable the genetic improvement of Bali Beef cattle.

  • Food Culture is formed in a unique culture heritage in some areas harmonized with social factors mixed with geographical conditions, natural environment, culture and religion. The more the life skill develops highly, the more people focus on improvement of the life skill in order to realize a delightful and convenient life, and plan an increase of production. Recently food-service companies have changed very quickly with economic environment. Such change will be continued and its speed will be more faster than now. Many food-service companies will disappear for weak competition, if they don’t manage adequately in such a case. Therefore, food-service companies have to search for an efficient, unique and creative management strategy. In such a viewpoint, Kyunggi-do designated five local cities as a model of Food Culture Streets greeting Welcoming Year of Kyunggi-do in 2005. The purpose of this study is to serve the healthy food to visitors visiting the Food Culture Streets and to do public relations about the excellence of their traditional food. In addition, this study includes improving tastes and qualities of food through education about cooking skills, management strategies and the best service with unique and creative menu development. Accordingly, we need to analyze the factors continuously on the business of food culture streets, and intend to use them as a database for high quality education and activity of food service industry in the future.
