  • Recently, as the use of digital equipment increases in various fields, the importance of image and signal processing is increasing. However, many kinds of noise occur in the digital signal during transmission and reception, and this noise greatly affects the final output of the system. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that effectively restores the image by removing noise according to pixel similarity in a mixed noise environment with impulse noise and AWGN. The proposed algorithm sets the reference value according to the noise type and applies the filtering to pixels similar to the reference value to obtain the final output. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has good noise canceling performance and compared with conventional methods using PSNR.

  • The technique presented in this paper maximizes LCD color performance by way of advanced gamma control technology. First, two gamma curves corresponding to two sub-pixels are mixed to minimize gamma distortion off-axis, then RGB gamma curve control is used to establish accurate on-axis color. Independent RGB curve control for each sub-pixel improves the LCD's performance both on- and off-axis.

  • Both impluse noise and AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise) are easily corrupted into images, during signal transmission and acquisition. Thus, an algorithm for removing both noises is represented in this paper. An impulse noise detection step can effectively separate impulse noise with AWGN, then in the noise filtering step, by using several parameters, not only impulse noise but also AWGN can be reduced. The value of those parameters are automatically changeable when the standard deviation of AWGN, the impulse noise density, and the spatial distances between pixels are different. Results of computer simulations show that the proposed approach performs better than other conventional filters.

  • The characteristics of neighborhood correlation images for change detection were explored at different spatial resolution scales. Bi-temporal QuickBird datasets of Las Vegas, NV were used for the high spatial resolution image analysis, while bi-temporal Landsat $TM/ETM^{+}$ datasets of Suwon, South Korea were used for the mid spatial resolution analysis. The neighborhood correlation images consisting of three variables (correlation, slope, and intercept) were evaluated and compared between the two scales for change detection. The neighborhood correlation images created using the Landsat datasets resulted in somewhat different patterns from those using the QuickBird high spatial resolution imagery due to several reasons such as the impact of mixed pixels. Then, automated binary change detection was also performed using the single and multiple neighborhood correlation image variables for both spatial resolution image scales.

  • The massive green tide occurred every summer in the Yellow Sea since 2008, and many studies are being actively conducted to estimate the coverage of green tide through analysis of satellite imagery. However, there is no satellite images selection criterion for accurate coverage calculation of green tide. Therefore, this study aimed to find a suitable satellite image from for the comparison of the green tide coverage according to the spatial resolution of satellite image. In this study, Landsat ETM+, MODIS and GOCI images were used to coverage estimation and its spatial resolution is 30, 250 and 500 m, respectively. Green tide pixels were classified based on the NDVI algorithm, the difference of the green tide coverage was compared with threshold value. In addition, we estimate the proportion of the green tide in one pixel through the Linear Spectral Unmixing (LSU) method, and the effect of the difference of green tide ratio on the coverage calculation were evaluated. The result of green tide coverage from the calculation of the NDVI value, coverage of green tide usually overestimate with decreasing spatial resolution, maximum difference shows 1.5 times. In addition, most of the pixels were included in the group with less than 0.1 (10%) LSU value, and above 0.5 (50%) LSU value accounted for about 2% in all of three images. Even though classified as green tide from the NDVI result, it is considered to be overestimated because it is regarded as the same coverage even if green tide is not 100% filled in one pixel. Mixed-pixel problem seems to be more severe with spatial resolution decreases.

  • Points of sharp variations in images are the most important components when we analyze singularities of images. And they include a variety of information about the image's location and shape etc. So a lot of researches for detecting those edges have been continuing even now and at the early stage of the research, edge detection operators used relation among neighborhood pixels. However, such methods do not have excellent performance in the image which exists noise and can not detect edge selectively. In the meantime, the wavelet transform which is presented as a new technique of signal processing field is able to detect multiscale edge and is being applied widely in many fields that analyze singularities such as edge. For this reason, in this paper we detected image's line-edge elements with 2-D wavelet function, which is independent of line's width, in mixed noise environment.

  • Spatial heterogeneous characteristics of solar radiation energy from Climate Change gives rise to energy imbalance in the general ecological system including water resources. This study is to estimate the $CO_2$ flux of South Korea using Terra MODIS image and to assess the reliability of MODIS data from the ground measured $CO_2$ flux by eddy covariance flux tower data at 3 locations (two at mixed forest area and one at rice paddy area). The MODIS Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) product (MOD17A2), 8-day composite at 1-km spatial resolution was adopted for the spatial $CO_2$ flux generation. The MOD17A2 data by noise like cloud and snow in a day were tried to fill by Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) method from valid pixels and the damping effect of MOD17A2 data were corrected by Quality Control (QC) flag. The MODIS $CO_2$ flux was estimated as the sum of GPP and Re (ecosystem respiration) by Lloyd and Taylor method (1994). The determination coefficient ($R^2$) between MODIS $CO_2$ and flux tower $CO_2$ for 3 years (2011~2013) showed 0.55 and 0.60 in 2 mixed forests and 0.56 in rice paddy respectively. The $CO_2$ flux generally fluctuated showing minus values during summer rainy season (from July to August) and maintaining plus values for other periods. The MODIS $CO_2$ flux can be a useful information for extensive area, for example, as a reliable indicator on ecological circulation system.

  • This paper proposes an independent component analyses(ICAs) of the fixed-point (FP) algorithm based on Newton and secant method by adding the kurtosis, respectively. The kurtosis is applied to cluster the analyzed components, and the FP algorithm is applied to get the fast analysis and superior performance irrelevant to learning parameters. The proposed ICAs have been applied to the problems for separating the 6-mixed signals of 500 samples and 10-mixed images of $512\times512$ pixels, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed ICAs have always a fixed analysis sequence. The results can be solved the limit of conventional ICA without a kurtosis which has a variable sequence depending on the running of algorithm. Especially. the proposed ICA can be used for classifying and identifying the signals or the images. The results also show that the secant method has better the separation speed and performance than Newton method. And, the secant method gives relatively larger improvement degree as the problem size increases.
