Effect of Fuel Mixing on PAH and Soot Formation in Counterflow Diffusion Flames (다양한 연료의 혼합에 따른 대향류 확산화염에서의 PAH 및 매연생성 특성)

  • In order to investigate the effect of fuel mixing on PAH and soot formation, four species of methane, ethane, propane and propene have been mixed in counterlfow ethylene diffusion flame. Laser-induced incandescene and laser-induced fluorescene techniques were employed to measure soot volume fraction and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration, respectively. Results showed that the mixing of ethane (or propane) in ethylene diffusion flame produces more PAHs and soot than those of propene. Considering that propene directly dehydrogenates to propargyl radical, this behavior implied that the enhancement of PAH and soot formation by the fuel mixing of ethylene and ethane (or propane) cannot be explained solely by propargyl radical directly dehydrogenated from ethane (or propane). Thus, combination reactions between C1 and C2-species for the formation of propargyl was suggested to identify the synergistic effect occurring in the flames of ethylene and propane (or ethane) mixtures.

  • Recently the automobile engine has been developed in achieving the high performance, fuel economy, and emission reduction. In a conventional spark ignition engine the fuel and air are mixed together in the intake system, inducted through the intake valve into the cylinder, and then compressed. Under normal operating conditions, the combustion is initiated towards the end of the compression stroke at the spark plug by an electric discharge. Following inflammation, a flame develops and propagates through this premixed fuel-air mixture. Therefore the state of mixture is very important in the combustion and emission characteristics. In this study the combustion and emission characteristics were tested and analyzed with changing the mixture composition and engine operating parameters in order to improve the combustion and performance in engine.

Preparation and Characterization of Hybrid Membrane for Block Copolymer Containing Diphenyl Unit Increasing Cationic Conductivity for Fuel Cells (연료전지용 양이온 전도성이 증가된 디페닐 단위를 갖는 블록공중합체 혼성막 제조 및 특성)

  • Sulfonated fluorinated block copolymers having diphenyl units were mixed with the sulfonated cationic conductive polymers at an optimum mixing ratio to form hybrid membranes for fuel cells and their characteristics were studied. 2D and 3D AFM topology analysis confirmed that the number of hydrophilic units in the hybrid membrane was improved. Through the FE-SEM, the microstructure of the hybrid membrane implied hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions, and EDAX confirmed carbon, oxygen, sulfur, and fluorine. The thermogravimetric analysis showed that the hybrid membrane was thermally stable and the hydrophilicity of the hybrid membrane was increased by the contact angle of water droplets. As a result, it was confirmed that the cation conductivity increased by a factor of 1.8 times as the number of acidic domains in the hybrid film increased.

  • The combustion process was applied to synthesize the LiAlO2 powder with high specific surface area and pure crystalline ${\gamma}$-phase. For the combustion synthesis of LiAlO2 which is a binary-component oxide in-cluding lithium and aluminum ions the mixture of citric acid and urea with stoichiometric composition was selected as a promising fuel. The highest combustion temperature was measured in the reaction using the mixed fuel with a stoichiometric composition. The synthesized powder was very fine and its specific surface area was more than 15 m2/g.

  • NiO films and Ru co-sputtered NiO films were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering for micro-solid oxide fuel cell anode applications. The deposited films were reduced to form porous films. The reduction kinetics of the Ru doped NiO film was more sluggish than that of the NiO film, and the resulting microstructure of the former exhibited finer pore networks. The possibility of using the films for the anodes of single chamber micro-SOFCs was investigated using an air/fuel mixed environment. It was found that the abrupt increase in the resistance is suppressed in the Ru co-sputtered film, as compared to undoped film.

  • We describe a manufacturing method and characteristics on components of molten carbonate fuel cell. Cr, Al, AI$_{2}$O$_{3}$, Co, MgO powder were mixed with Ni powder for anode components and NiO was used for cathode electrode. The electrolyte plate consisted of LiAIO$_{2}$ and carbonate (Li$_{2}$CO$_{3}$/K$_{2}$CO$_{3}$=62/38) and these three were manufactured by doctor-blade method. As a result, open circuit voltage was 1.05[VI at Ni-10Cr anode and porosity was above 60[%].

  • One of the unsolved problems of the natural gas dual fuel engine is that there is too much exhaust of Total Hydrogen Carbon(THC) at a low equivalent mixture ratio. To fix it, a natural gas mixed with hydrohen was applied to engine test. The results showed that the higher the mixture ratio of hydrogen to natural gas, the higher the combustion efficiency. And when the amount of the intake air is reached to 90% of WOT, the combustion efficiency was promoted. But, like a case making the injection timing earlier, the equivalent mixture ratio for the nocking limit decreases and the produce of NOx increases.

Towards inferring reactor operations from high-level waste

  • Nuclear archaeology research provides scientific methods to reconstruct the operating histories of fissile material production facilities to account for past fissile material production. While it has typically focused on analyzing material in permanent reactor structures, spent fuel or high-level waste also hold information about the reactor operation. In this computational study, we explore a Bayesian inference framework for reconstructing the operational history from measurements of isotope ratios from a sample of nuclear waste. We investigate two different inference models. The first model discriminates between three potential reactors of origin (Magnox, PWR, and PHWR) while simultaneously reconstructing the fuel burnup, time since irradiation, initial enrichment, and average power density. The second model reconstructs the fuel burnup and time since irradiation of two batches of waste in a mixed sample. Each of the models is applied to a set of simulated test data, and the performance is evaluated by comparing the highest posterior density regions to the corresponding parameter values of the test dataset. Both models perform well on the simulated test cases, which highlights the potential of the Bayesian inference framework and opens up avenues for further investigation.

  • 일본은 사용후연료의 재처리 정책을 진행하고 있으나 고속증식로 계획이 지연됨에 따라 그 처리의 목표가 확실하지 못하다. MOX(Mixed-Oxide Fuel : 혼합 산화물 연료)에 의한 처리가 계획되어 있으나 상당히 어려운 상황이다. 또 2018년에 미 일 원자력협력협정의 갱신이 예정되어 있는데 이 플루토늄의 취급이 문제가 될 예정이다. 미국은 핵무기의 원료나 테러에 사용할지도 모르는 플루토늄의 확산을 경계하고 있기 때문이다.
