  • It is known that house dust mites which settle on sofa, carpet, and dust in the house ignite asthma and allergic rhinitis. Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus distribute widely and densely in Korea. In this study we carried out to identify that shed hair of dogs which was applied topically with fipronil ($\Frontline^{circledR}$) kill house dust mites. We co-cultured house dust mites with fipronil-applied hair of dog during 12 hours, and then compared the death rate of mites here with that cultured without hair. The larger amount of hair, the more mites were killed. The death rate of mites was higher than control significantly until 2 weeks after $\Frontline^{circledR}$ application. Hair which had been shed at 3 days after $\Frontline^{circledR}$ application always killed the smaller number of mites than not shed. The present study suggested that the use of $\Frontline^{circledR}$ to our pets control house dust mites effectively.

  • The chigger mites known as the vectors of Tsutsugamushi disease seriously increased due to the expansion of their habitats by the change of farmland into idle land, arboreta and golf courses with the progress of industrialization. These mites were surveyed for their nymphs in soil of four areas located in the northern part of Kyonggido known as the outbreak areas of Tsutsugamushi disease. Total number of the chigger mites collected in the soil of four surveyed areas was 2576, and two genera and ten species including Leptotrombidium palpale were indentified. Among them L. pallidum was the dominant species with the highest occurrence rate of 62 percent. Nine species occurred on the bank of Changrungchon that has been idled for more than ten years, but six or seven species occurred in Wonhundong and Ilsandong that hans been idled for less than five years. The number of individuals collected was also higher in Changrungchon than the other sites. Seasonal occurrence of these mites showed a peak with 166 mites in November on the west slope and another with 192 mites in February on the east slope of the bank of Changrungchon, but none in June. Component ratio of individual numbers for L. palpale, L. pallidum, L. orientalis and L.scutelaris were 19, 62, 9 and 3 percent, respectively. Individual number of L. pallidum and L. scutelaris appeared to some extent of 397 and 23 mites, respetively.

  • 330 House-Mice (Rattus norvegicus; 288, Rattus rattus; 42) were captured in surveyed areas (Downtown Seoul, Yeom-gok dong, and Sung-nam city) from May 1st, 1983 to April 30, 1984. Total 6170 of their Mites were collected from the above-indicated House-Mice. The survey on the number of species, the average individual number, preference of host, infection rate, and monthly abundance of Mites reached the following results. Seven species of Mites in Rattus norvegicus, and 5 species of Mites in Rattus rattus were respectively found. Accordingly whole Mites were found in 4 families, 6 genera, 9 species including unrecorded Hirstionysssus apodemi and Roadfordia ensifera. The most common species among Mites were Laelaps nuttalli (70.6). In aspect of the average individualnumber of Mites by host, 19.9% of Rattus norvegicus is more excessive than 10.2% of Rattus rattus. Eulaelaps stabularis, Androlaelaps glasgowi, Hirstionys년 apodemi were shown in preference of host in Rattus norvegicus, while Laelaps jettmari and Rodfordia ensifera in Rattus rattus. Rattus norvegicus was much infected by Laelaps nuttalli, while Rattus rattus by Laelaps echidninus. The seasonal development of it in Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus was at peak in July and in September. And Ornithonyssu bacoti was at peak in June, while Laelaps echidninus and Laelaps nuttalli in July.

  • In this study three types of domatia; Tuft (T), Pocket-Tuft (PT) and Pocket (P) were observed on some species of the genus Cornus. Cornus officinalis Sieb & Zuee and C. florida Linnaeus possess T type, C. controversa Hemsl and C. walteri Wangerin possess PT type while C. alba Linnaeus possess P type. A total of 120 leaves were investigated for foliar mite's population. T type domatia was the habitat of 329 mites (48.89%), followed by PT type where 198 mites (29.41%) were found, and the least favored was the P type domatia that accommodated 146 mites (21.70%) out of 673 mites in total. The mean number of mites per domatia was $8({\pm}0.22)$, $4({\pm}0.95)$ and $3({\pm}0.70)$ for T, PT and P type, respectively. The alternative hypothesis that foliar mites prefer T type domatia as a habitat than PT and P type domatia was accepted based on these findings at a probability of P<0.05. Thus, it was concluded that foliar mites prefer T type domatia than the other two types. This could be due to the nature and efficiency of T type domatia in ensuring mites protection from predators and unfriendly environmental conditions. Therefore, the presence of denser tufts lowers the risks of predation and unfriendly environmental conditions and results in a higher number of mites.

  • In the course of surveying the internal parasites of domestic animals, a large number of eggs and mites were detected in the feces and feeds of cattle, pigs, chickens and ducks. Three kinds of mites were identified in the present studies: Acarus siro (Linnaeus), Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank) and Cheyletus malaccensis (Oudemans). The eggs of the mites were similar to those of flukes. In the fecal examination, therefore, it is necessary to differentiate the mite eggs from fluke eggs. The mites found in the present studies live by organic materials. Thus, they were found in the mixed commercial animal feeds. The spoiling of animal feeds by these mites remains to be verified. The damage of the gut epithelium of animals by these adult mites has to be examined more thoroughly, although macroscopic changes were not detected in the present studies. In the commercial animal feeds, the mites were largely found during the warm, humid seasons. As these mites can cause dermatitis in man, care should be taken not to contact continuously with the contaminated feeds.

  • The purpose of this study were to identify seasons variation of house dust mites allergen and perceived allergic symptom. The subjects were consisted of 29 family with allergy patients and 34 family without allergy patients. Perceived allergic symptoms were accessed and house dust was sampled from beds, floor of bedroom, kitchen and livingroom in spring(August), summer (July), fall(October) and winter(January) and tested using two-site ELISA. The results were as follows; 1) In all family, amount of house dust mites allergen(Der fI) of livingroom floor was the highest in summer$(4.73{\mu}g/1g\;of\;dust)$, and then fall$4.67{\mu}g/1g\;of\;dust)$, winter$(3.94{\mu}g/1g\;of\;dust)$, spring$(1.73{\mu}g/1g\;of\;dust)$. 2) In family with allergy patients, amount of house dust mites allergen(Der fI) of bedroom floor was highest in fall $(9.75{\mu}g/1g\;of\;dust)$. 3) In family with allergy patients, amount of house dust mites allergen(Der fI) of mattress was highest in fall$(8.23{\mu}g/1g\;of\;dust)$. 4) Perceived allergic symptom scores of family with allergy patients were higher than family without allergy patients in all seasons. In family without allergy patients, perceived allergic symptom scores was the highest in spring(4.29) and perceived allergic symptom scores of family with patients was the highest in winter(2.49). 5) The relationship of house dust mites allergen and perceived allergic symptom scores were positively related (r=.941, p=.000). Perceived allergic symptoms were correlated with amount of house dust mites allergen, That is, perceived allergic symptoms were became worse by house dust mites allergen. So House dust mites allergen reducing strategies and intervention should be recommended in further study.

  • The parasitic mites were collected from a total of 2,691 house rats in four areas of Seoul, Seongnam, Incheon and Yangsuri of Korea from January, 1983 to December, 1986, Infestation rates, the species composition of the mites. species diversity, evenness, dominance, similarity of the mites among the areas and monthly abundance were studied as follows: Among twenty-one species of mites identified from two species of house rats in the areas, 12 species belonged to Mesostigmata, 8 species to prostigmata and 1 species to Metastigmata. Out of twenty-one species, ten including Androlaelaps casalis were commonly found only on Rattus norvegicus, however, two including Haemogamsus serdjukovae only on Rattus rattus, and all the trombiculid mites were found in particular on R norvegicus. The highest infestation rates of the mites on the rats ranged from June to August in all the areas throughout the year. The species diversity of the mites was the highest (0.6280) in Yangsuri with the highest evenness value (0.5770) observed in Incheon. The seasonal species diversities in Seoul, Seongnam and Yangsuri were higher in April, October and March respectively than the other time of the year. The highest similarity value was calculated between Yangsuri and Seoul areas, compared with the lowest combination in Seoul and Seongnam areas. The seasonal indices of mites showed that the most abundant number of mites was observed in spring and summer in Seoul and Seongnam, in summer and autumn in Incheon and in the winter season in Yangsuri. The mesostigmatid and metastigmatid mites were collected abundantly in July and September from R. norvegicus and R rattus in Seoul with the highest number of the above mites found from R. norvegicus in June in Seongnam. Particularly in Yangsuri, a large number of the mites were collected all the year round.

  • Viruses in garlic plants (Allium sativum L.) have accumulated and evolved over generations, resulting in serious consequences for the garlic trade around the world. These viral epidemics are also known to be caused by aphids and eriophyid mites (Aceria tulipae) carrying Potyviruses, Carlaviruses, and Allexiviruses. However, little is known about viral epidemics in garlic plants caused by eriophyid mites. Therefore, this study investigated the infection of garlic plants with Allexiviruses by eriophyid mites. When healthy garlic plants were cocultured with eriophyid mites, the leaves of the garlic plants developed yellow mosaic strips and became distorted. In extracts from the eriophyid mites, Allexiviruses were observed using immunosorbent electron microscopy (ISEM). From an immunoblot analysis, coat proteins against an Allexivirus garlic-virus antiserum were clearly identified in purified extracts from collected viral-infected garlic plants, eriophyid mites, and garlic plants infected by eriophyid mites. A new strain of GarV-B was isolated and named GarV-B Korea isolate 1 (GarV-B1). The ORF1 and ORF2 in GarV-B1 contained a typical viral helicase, RNA-directed RNA polymerase (RdRp), and triple gene block protein (TGBp) for viral movement between cells. The newly identified GarV-B1 was phylogenetically grouped with GarV-C and GarV-X in the Allexivirus genus. All the results in this study demonstrated that eriophyid mites are a transmitter insect species for Allexiviruses.

  • This study was conducted to analyze oribatid mites communities in deciduous forests in Namsan and Kwangreung on which different levels of environmental stresses might press, and to select potential condidate of biological indicator species. In overall, pH was lower in soil than in litter layer. Also soil pH, total nitrate content and soluble sulfate content were significantly higher in Namsan than in Kwangreung (p<0.05). The flora in Namsan and Kwangreung deciduous forests were dominated by Quercus mongolica, and Carpinus laxiflora respectively. It indicated that Namsan was in the lower stage of the floral succession. The number of species of oribatid mites was significantly higher in Kwangreung (39 families, 65 genera and 114 species) than in Namsan (32 families, 53 genera and 89 species) (p<0.05). Common species found in two regions were 77 species. Mean density of oribatid mites was 1.8 times higher in Kwangreung than in Namsan and this difference came mainly from litter layer. Among correlation analyses between environmental factors and oribatid mites density and species number, only density was negatively correlated with fresh litter depth in Namsan litter layer (r=-0.89, p<0.05). The pH which was considered to affect distribution of oribatid mites didn't show significant results.
