  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the shear wave tomography technology as a non-destructive testing method to evaluate the debonding between the track concrete layer (TCL) and the hydraulically stabilized based course (HSB) of concrete slab tracks for the Korea high-speed railway system. A commercially available multi-channel shear wave measurement device (MIRA) is used to evaluate debonding defects in full-scaled mock-up test specimen that was designed and constructed according to the Rheda 200 system. A part of the mock-up specimen includes two artificial debonding defects with a length and a width of 400mm and thicknesses of 5mm and 10mm, respectively. The tomography images obtained by a MIRA on the surface of the concrete specimens are effective for visualizing the debonding defects in concrete. In this study, a simple image processing method is proposed to suppress the noisy signals reflected from the embedded items (reinforcing steel, precast sleeper, insert, etc.) in TCL, which significantly improves the readability of debonding defects in shear wave tomography images. Results show that debonding maps constructed in this study are effective for visualizing the spatial distribution and the depths of the debondiing defects in the railway concrete slab specimen.

  • We answer a question raised by P. Brass on the number of maximally repeated sub-patterns in a set of n points in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. We show that is number, which was conjectured to be polynomial, is in fact $\Theta(2^{\frac{n}{2}})$ in the worst case, regardless of the dimension d.

  • Geometric approach to extend the classical two-set theory of canonical correlation analysis to three or more sets is considered. It provides statistical graphs to represent the data in a low dimensional space. Procedures are developed for computing the canonical variables and the corresponding properties are investigated. The solution is equivalent to that of the usual problem in the case of two sets. Goodness-of-fit of the proposed plots is studied and a numerical example is included.

  • We present the results of image simulations of 43.1 GHz SiO maser emission toward a Mira variable using the KVN (Korean VLBI Network) and other facilities which can make joint VLBI experiments with the KVN. To test the imaging capability of the KVN we used the image of SiO masers in the simulation obtained by the VLBA, which is considered to be the optimum VLBI facility at present to study SiO masers toward evolved stars. The simulated images of SiO maser emission confirm that coordinate VLBI expriments of KVN with several more stations in Japan or in the neighborhood of Korean Peninsula are necessary to exert the functional benefit of the KVN as the first mm VLBI facility which can perform simultaneous observations at four different frequency bands.

  • We present 2D- photometric decompositions of ~1,200 nearby dwarf galaxies. Our representative sample is derived from 'A catalog of Visually classified galaxies in the Local Universe'(Ann, Seo and Ha APJS,,,2015) of which galaxy morphological types are determined by visual inspection of color images using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 7. In this catalog, dwarf galaxies were divided into 5 subtypes : dS0, dE, dSph, dEbc, dEblue with distinction of the presence of nucleation in dE, dSph, and dS0. The dSph types are less brighter than other types, and galaxies with nuclei are slightly brighter than those with no nuclei in the same types. Sersic index n have a range 1~1.5, and $dE_{un}$ and $dSph_{un}$ galaxies have n less than 1, and $dSph_n$ galaxies have largest values. We performed two-dimensional decomposition of galaxies using GALFIT, and analyzed their structural components, and residual features which are seen in the residual image.

  • A slew-rate control method of LCD driver ICs is introduced to increase uniformity between adjacent driver ICs and reduce power consumption. The slew rate of every voltage follower is calibrated by a feedback algorithm during the non-displaying period. Under normal operation mode, the slew rate is dynamically controlled for improving power efficiency. Experimental results show that the power consumption is reduced by 16% with a white pattern and by 10% with a black pattern, and display defects are successfully eliminated.
