In this paper, various webs of I-shaped beam used in aircraft spars are examined. Under the assumption that an aircraft spar is a cantilevered beam with a constant cross-section and is subjected to only bending, four kinds of webs are analyzed for three different sizes. To enable comparison, each hole has the same area and are subjected to the same load by using EDISON 2D Continuum analysis. While circular hole is the most often used, elliptic one is obtained with the minimum von-Mises stress by about 40% decreased. To verify the results gathered by EDISON, comparison was made with ANSYS and analytic predictions obtained with the stress intensity factor K. As comparison shows insignificant discrepancies, it is concluded that a well-designed beam with elliptic holes will be the most efficient spar regarding weight to rigidity ratio in terms of the bending stress.

In this paper, an improved multi-objective optimmum design method is proposed. And it is applied to steel frames under seismic loads. The multi-objective optimization problem is formulated with three optimality criteria, namely, minimum structural weight and maximum strain energy and stability. The Pareto curve can be obtained by performing the multi-objective optimization for multistory shear buildings. In order to efficiently solve the multi-objective optimization problem the decomposition method that separates both system-level and element-level is used. In addition, various techniques such as effective reanalysis technique with respect to intermediate variables and sensitivity analysis using an automatic differentiation (AD) we incorporated. Moreover, the relationship function among section properties induced from the profile is used in order to link system-level and element level. From the results of numerical investigation, it may be stated that the proposed method will lead to the more rational design compared with the conventional one.

This paper describes the application of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria (DCOC) for the reinforced concrete continuous beams. The cost of construction as objective function which includes the costs of concrete, reinforced steel, formwork is minimized. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection in a given span, on bending and shear strengths, optimality criteria is given based on the well known Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, followed by an iterative procedure for designs when the design variables are the depth and the steel ratio. The self-weight of the beam is included in the equilibrium equation of the real system. Two numerical examples of reinforced concrete continuous beams with rectangular cross-section are solved to show the applicability and efficiency for the DCOC-based technique

This paper describes the application of discretized continuum-type optimality criteria (DCOC) for the multispan partially prestressed concrete beams. The cost of construction as objective function which includes the costs of concrete, prestressing steel, non-prestressing steel and formwork is minimized. The design constraints include limits on the maximum deflection, flexural and shear strengths, in addition to ductility requirements, and upper and lower bounds on design variables as stipulated by the design code. Based on Kuhn-Tucker necessary conditions, the optimality criteria are explicitly derived in terms of the design variables-effective depth, eccentricity of prestressing steel and non-prestressing steel ratio. The prestressing profile is prescribed by parabolic functions. The self-weight of the structure is included in the equilibrium equation of the real system, as is the secondary effect resulting from the prestressing force. Two numerical examples of multispan PPC beams with rectangular cross-section are solved to show the applicability and efficiency fo the DCOC-based technique.
The dynamic and structural responses of a 1000-m long circular submerged floating tunnel (SFT) with both ends fixed under survival irregular-wave excitations are investigated. The floater-mooring nonlinear and elastic coupled dynamics are modeled by a time-domain numerical simulation program, OrcaFlex. Two configurations of mooring lines i.e., vertical mooring (VM) and inclined mooring (IM), and four different buoyancy-weight ratios (BWRs) are selected to compare their global performances. The result of modal analysis is included to investigate the role of the respective natural frequencies and elastic modes. The effects of various submergence depths are also checked. The envelopes of the maximum/minimum horizontal and vertical responses, accelerations, mooring tensions, and shear forces/bending moments of the entire SFT along the longitudinal direction are obtained. In addition, at the mid-section, the time series and the corresponding spectra of those parameters are also presented and analyzed. The pros and cons of the two mooring shapes and high or low BWR values are systematically analyzed and discussed. It is demonstrated that the time-domain numerical simulation of the real system including nonlinear hydro-elastic dynamics coupled with nonlinear mooring dynamics is a good method to determine various design parameters.

A novel type of buckling restrained brace with built-up angle steel was developed. The core segment was formed by welding angle steel, and the middle section was reduced by cutting technology to solve the problem that the end of BRB was easy to buckle. The experimental program has been undertaken to study the performance of BRBs with different unbonded materials (silica gel, kraft paper) and different filler materials (ordinary concrete, full light-weight concrete). Four specimens were designed and fabricated for low cycle reciprocating load tests to simulate horizontal seismic action. The failure mode, hysteretic curves, tension-compression unbalance coefficient and other mechanical parameters were compared and analyzed. The finite element software ABAQUS was used to conduct numerical simulation, and the simulation results were compared with the experimental phenomena. The test results indicated that the hysteretic curve of each specimen was plump. Sustaining cumulative strains of each specimen was greater than the minimum value of 200 required by the code, which indicated the ductility of BRB was relatively good. The energy dissipation coefficient of the specimen with silica gel as unbonded material was about 13% higher than that with kraft paper. The experimental results were in good agreement with the simulation results.

In 2007, Iowa department of transportation (DOT) initiated to run the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) network-level testing along Iowa highway and road systems and to build a comprehensive database of deflection data and subsequent structural analysis, which are used for detecting pavement structure failure, estimating expected life, and calculating overlay requirements over a desired design life. Iowa's current FWD networklevel testing protocol requires that pavements are tested at three-drop level with 8-deflection basin collected at each drop level. The test point is determined by the length of the tested pavement section. However, the current FWD network-level program could cover about 20% of Iowa's highway and road systems annually. Therefore, the current FWD network-level test protocol should be simplified to test more than 20% of Iowa's highway and road systems for the network-level test annually. The main objective of this research is to investigate if the minimum number of drop levels and test points could be reduced to increase the testing production rate and reduce the cost of testing and traffic control without sacrificing the quality of the FWD data. Based upon the limited FWD network-level test data of eighty-three composite pavement sections, there was no significant difference between the mean values of three different response parameters when the number of drop levels and test points were reduced from the current FWD network-level testing protocol. As a result, the production rate of FWD tests would increase and the cost of testing and traffic control would be decreased without sacrificing the quality of the FWD data.
An improved formulation for multi-objective optimization was proposed. This formulation was applied to steel seismic loads. The multi-objective optimization problem was formulated with minimum structural weight, maximum strstability. The global criterion method was employed to find a rational solution closest to the ideal solution for the optimization problem using standard steel profile, To efficiently solve the optimization problem, the decomposition meth both system-level and element-level was used. In addition, various techniques including efficient reanalysis technique intermediate variables and sensitivity analysis using an automatic differentiation(AD) were incorporated. Moreover the reamong section properties fitted to the section profile used in order to link the system level and the element level. From numerical investigation, it could be stated that the proposed method will lead to the more rational design compared with one.

For swiftness and economic feasibility of parcel delivery, optimal location of mail exchanging centers considering not only section delivery distance but also some weights like the number of delivery vehicles are necessary. In this paper, a mechanism with section delivery distance and vehicle number for locating of mail distribution centers which connect some mail centers of major cities in Republic Korea by applying GOSST theory is proposed. This mechanism for locating mail exchange centers can make the total delivery distance of postal matters less than not only present method which assigns Daejun as mail exchange center, but also Steiner tree method which does not consider weights like number of delivery vehicles. The mechanism is good for protecting the environment as well as rapid and economic delivery. In experiment, the proposed mechanism could curtail total delivery distance by 2.52 percentages compared with Steiner tree method and by 6.66 percentages compared with present method. The mechanism may be used in electric power transmission routing, distribution line topology design, power relay station locating where various voltages and other weights should be considered.

Hydro-forming technology has spread dramatically throughout automotive industry over the last 20 years. This technology has many advantages for automotive applications in terms of better structural integrity of the parts, lower cost from fewer parts, material savings, weight reduction, lower springback, improved strength, durability, and design flexibility. In this study, various simulation technologies were developed to investigate the formability of hydro-forming components. Through this technology, to establish the effective forming process for appropriate components design, the bending process, pre-forming process, die closing process, etc. were considered for good forming. This paper proposes the forming amount, section length (corresponding to the hydro-forming press capacity), and minimum curvature (curvature effect evaluation according to the hydro-forming pressure) among the considerations in the design of the hydro-forming part. In addition, a design method is proposed for hydro-forming molding by carrying out cross section analysis of a real sub-frame part for automobiles. The effects of pre-bending, axial feed, hydraulic pressure, press load, and friction among the hydro-forming process parameters were analyzed. Therefore, whether these processes are necessary factors for hydro-forming were examined.
