  • This paper presents an improved single-stage ac-dc LED-drive flyback converter using the transformer-coupled lossless (TCL) snubber. The proposed converter is derived from the integration of a full-bridge diode rectifier and a conventional flyback converter with a simple TCL snubber. The TCL snubber circuit is composed of only two diodes, a capacitor, and a transformer-coupled auxiliary winding. The TCL snubber limits the surge voltage of the switch and regenerates the energy stored in the leakage inductance of the transformer. Also, the switch of the proposed converter is turned on at a minimum voltage using a formed resonant circuit. Thus, the proposed converter achieves high efficiency. The proposed converter utilizes only one general power factor correction (PFC) control IC as its controller and performs both PFC and output power regulation, simultaneously. Therefore, the proposed converter provides a simple structure and an economic implementation and achieves a high power factor without the need for any separate PFC circuit. In this paper, the operational principle of the proposed converter is explained in detail and the design guideline of the proposed converter is briefly shown. Experimental results for a 40-W prototype are shown to validate the performance of the proposed converter.

  • The conventional LCL filter design method of the utility interactive inverter considers only harmonics attenuation of the current injected to the grid. However, in case of utility-interactive inverter with critical load the voltage quality of the critical load should also be considered for LCL filter design. Also, considering cost and volume of LCL filters. it is important to have minimum values of inductance and capacitance as far as the harmonic standards are satisfied. In this paper a LCL filter design method is proposed to satisfy not only the harmonic standards of the grid current during the grid-connected mode but the voltage quality of the critical load during grid-connected mode and stand-alone mode. With the proposed method optimized values of LCL filters could be obtained by applying weighting factor to voltage ripple across the critical load, inductor volume, amount of reactive current and system bandwidth.

  • This paper presented a design technique of planar magnetic components for forward converter. Planar magnetic components are a good solution for high frequency switching-mode power supplies(SMPS). Since these kind of magnetic components have some advantages(low leakage inductance, low profile, low weight, minimum EMI etc.) that improve the SMPS performance, their use is growing in the last years. In this paper, the performance of designed system is verified by simulation and experiment by comparing the system using conventional magnetic components and the system using planar magnetic components.

  • This paper presents the PFC method for an electronic ballast using SEPIC converter. Generally, the Boost Converter Type PFC has a DC 400V and output voltage is a bigger than input rms voltage. But the SEPIC type converter has above 0.95 Power Factor and wanted output voltage. This paper employs the SEPIC(Single Ended Primary Inductance Converter) Converter for PFC and the Ring core for oscillating method. Consequently, We reduced element's size and capacity in a converter with minimum voltage for the operating lamp.

  • The SRM is a doubly salient, singly excited machine. The torque is developed by the tendency for the magnetic circuit to adopt a configuration of minimum reluctance, i.e. for the rotor to move into in line with the stator poles and to maximize the inductance of the coils excited. It is common practice to combine them into groups of poles which are excited simultaneously; for example, 8/6 SRM (8 stator poles and 6 rotor poles) for 4 phases, 6/4, 12/8 SRM for 3 phases, 4/2, 6/3 SRM for 2 phases. Small number of phases in two-phase SRMs allows more cost savings with regards to the switching devices in the converter. The stator back irons of two phase 6/3 SRM and C-core 4/3 SRM does not experience any flux reversal as the flux is in the same direction whether phase A or B is excited. In this study, the similarities, the differences, and structural characteristics between the two SRMs was studied, The magnetic analysis also has been carried out by the finite element method analysis (FEM).

  • A magnetic field exposure system that generates 60 Hz magnetic fields from 1 mG to 5 G was designed and constructed for small-sized animal study. In order to investigate as many animals as possible at one series of test, uniform magnetic fields are required at wide living area of the animals. In this article, a cubic shaped field exposure system with three animal living floors was designed, which offers about 50 seating capacity. For calculation of magnetic fields inside the cage, a three-dimensional calculation program was developed. Using this, optimum electric current ratio of inner coil to outer coil and position of each coil were determined. Meanwhile, inductance of the exposure system was calculated for the design of power supply. The field measurement results of the manufactured exposure system showed that the difference between maximum and minimum magnetic field at the testing floors was less than 3%, which strongly demonstrated the field exposure system was good for small sized animal study.

  • The design of low voltage LC-VCO(LC Voltage Controlled Oscillator) has been presented to optimize the phase noise and power consumption for the block of frequency synthesis to satisfy WCDMA system specification in this paper. The parameters for minimum phase noise has been obtained in the region of design, using the lines of the tuning range and the excess gain in the plane of the inductance and the transconductance of MOS transistor to compensate the loss of LC-tank. As a result of simulation, the phase noise characteristics is -113dBc/Hz for offset of 1MHz. The optimum designed LC-VCO has been fabricated using the process of 0.25um CMOS. As a result of measurement for fabricated chip, the phase noise characteristics is -116dBc/Hz for offset of 1MHz. The power consumption is 15mW, and Kvco is 370MHz/V.

  • Metamaterials composed of split cut wire (SCW) on grounded polyimide film substrate have been investigated for the aim of electromagnetic wave absorbers operated in THz frequency band. Reflection loss and current density distributions are numerically simulated with variations of the SCW geometries using the commercial software. The minimum reflection loss lower than -20 dB has been identified at 5.5~6.5 THz. The simulated resonance frequency and reflection loss can be explained on the basis of the circuit theory of an inductance-capacitance (L-C) resonator. Dual-band absorption can be obtained by arrangement of two SCWs of different length on the top layer of the grounded substrate, which is due to multiple magnetic resonances by scaling of SCWs. With increasing the side spacing between SCWs, a more enhanced absorption peak is observed at the first resonance frequency that is shifted to a lower frequency.

  • In this paper, a zero torque control scheme adopting current sharing function (CSF) used in integrated Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) drive with DC battery charger is proposed. The proposed control scheme is able to achieve the keeping position (KP), zero torque (ZT) and power factor correction (PFC) at the same time with a simple novel current sharing function algorithm. The proposed CSF makes the proper reference for each phase windings of SRM to satisfy the total charging current of the battery with zero torque output to hold still position with power factor correction, and the copper loss minimization during of battery charging is also achieved during this process. Based on these, CSFs can be used without any recalculation of the optimal current at every sampling time. In this proposed integrated battery charger system, the cost effective, volume and weight reduction and power enlargement is realized by function multiplexing of the motor winding and asymmetric SR converter. By using the phase winding as large inductors for charging process, and taking the asymmetric SR converter as an interleaved converter with boost mode operation, the EV can be charged effectively and successfully with minimum integral system. In this integral system, there is a position sliding mode controller used to overcome any uncertainty such as mutual inductance or DC offset current sensor. Power factor correction and voltage adaption are obtained with three-phase buck type converter (or current source rectifier) that is cascaded with conventional SRM, one for wide input and output voltage range. The practicability is validated by the simulation and experimental results by using a laboratory 3-hp SRM setup based on TI TMS320F28335 platform.

  • This paper presents a new load sharing control for use between paralleled three-phase inverters in an islanded microgrid based on the online line impedance estimation by the use of a Kalman filter. In this study, the mismatch of power sharing when the line impedance changes due to temperature, frequency, significant differences in line parameters and the requirements of the Plug-and-Play mode for inverters connected to a microgrid has been solved. In addition, this paper also presents a new droop control method working with the line impedance that is different from the traditional droop algorithm when the line impedance is assumed to be pure resistance or pure inductance. In this paper, the line impedance estimation for parallel inverters uses the minimum square method combined with a Kalman filter. In addition, the secondary control loops are designed to restore the voltage amplitude and frequency of a microgrid by using a combined nominal value SOGI-PLL with a generalized integral block and phase lock loop to monitor the exact voltage magnitude and frequency phase at the PCC. A control model has been simulated in Matlab/Simulink with three voltage source inverters connected in parallel for different ratios of power sharing. The simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed control method.
