A molel study was conducted to determine the optimal sample size for the analysis of the aquatic insect community in a stream reach of the Pangtae Creek, Kangwon-do in October 1995 and may 1996. The results showed that the required minimum sample size varied and depended on the purposes of the community analysis. Acoording to the Species: Area Curve method, at least 16 Surber samplings ($30{\times}30cm$) were required in a stream reach in each spring and fall survey. The species diversity index did not vary significantly as the sample size increased. Based on the coefficient of variation analysis, the minimum sample sizes of 10 were required in order to compare seasonal differences of the community in the study area. Considering the static community structure of aquatic insects, including both species numbers and individual numbers of aquatic insects, 11 and 7 samplings were optimal sizes for the fall and spring survey, respectively. We concluded that 12 Surber samplings from 3 riffle-pool sequences (4 samplings at each riffle-pool sequence) would be required in a stream reach (length 1 km) to obtain reliable as well as cost efficient data. Our model showed that the optimal sample size should be determined by interactions between minimum sample size, the degree of data reliability, and cost efficiency.
The delivery system such as sprue, runner and gate is a waste of resin in injection molding operation. In this study the reduction of runner size has been investigated using injection molding CAE softwares, Moldflow and Moldex3D, and commercial CFD Softwares, Fluent and Polyflow. To verify the computational results experiment was performed. There were three considerations in deciding optimal runner size in this study: minimum pressure at the gate that makes resin fully filled in the cavity, minimum runner size that compensates shrinkage of resin in the cavity, and frozen layer thickness formed in the runner during injection. Through the computer simulations the optimal runner size that satisfies those three considerations has been decided. Although the computational results among the softwares were slightly different, it was enough to predict the optimal runner size. The previous runner diameter was 8 mm and predicted optimal size was 5 mm. This was verified by injection molding experiment. Thus, the way of CAE application in deciding optimal runner size adapted in this study would be appropriated.

In this paper, we propose the optimal lag size which is optimize the performance of the fixed-lag minimum variance FIR smoother. Since the performance of estimation is represented with two Riccati equation and the nonlinear equation of lag size, it is difficult to obtain the optimal lag size. Therefore, we consider the optimal lag size for the scalar system and the numerical example is provided to demonstrate the proposed algorithm.
This paper investigates the design of multi-winding coupled inductor for minimum inductor current ripple. Based on the general circuit model of coupled inductor together with the operating principles of dc-dc converter, the relationship between the ripple size of inductor current and the coupling factor is derived under the different duty ratio. The optimal coupling factor of n-phase multi-winding coupled inductor which corresponds to a minimum inductor ripple current becomes -(1/n-1), i.e. a complete inverse coupling without leakage inductance, as the duty ratio of steady-state operating point approaches 1/n, 2/n, ${\cdots}$ or (n-1)/n. In an opposite manner, the optimal coupling factor value of zero, i.e. zero mutual inductance, is required when the duty ratio of steady-state operating point approaches either zero or one. Therefore, coupled inductors having optimal coupling factor can minimize the ripple current of inductor and inductor size.

In this paper, an algorithm for determining the optimal resolution has been described for measuring the actual length of circular objects. As the resolution gets higher, the measurement error in general becomes smaller because of the reduced distance per pixel. However, the higher resolution makes circular objects enlarged, which may produce an ill-conditioned system. That is, a small error in the boundary positions may result in a large error in the analysis of the circular objects. Taking this fact into account, a new measure is proposed to determine the optimal resolution. The actual errors have been calculated with various resolutions and the resolution with the minimum error has been decided as the optimal resolution. The analysis using various circles with different sizes indicates that the minimum measurement error is obtained when the whole circle appears in the screen as large as possible, regardless of the size of circle. The experimental results using real images have verified the validity of our analysis.
As one of many design variables, the role of dimension tolerances is to restrict the amount of size variation in a manufactured feature while ensuring functionality. In this study, a nonlinear integer model has been modeled to allocate the optimal tolerance to each individual feature at a minimum manufacturing cost. While a normal distribution determines statistically worst tolerances with its symmetrical property in many previous tolerance allocation studies, a asymmetrical distribution is more realistic because its mean is not always coincident with a process center. A nonlinear integer model is modeled to allocate the optimal tolerance to a feature based on a beta distribution at a minimum total cost. The total cost as a function of tolerances is defined by machining cost and quality loss. After the convexity of manufacturing cost is checked by the Hessian matrix, the model is solved by the Complex Method. Finally, a numerical example is presented demonstrating successful model implementation for a nonlinear design case.
This paper investigates the design of coupled inductor for minimum inductor current ripple in rapid traction battery charger systems. Based on the general circuit model of coupled inductor together with the operating principles of dc-dc converter, the relationship between the ripple size of inductor current and the coupling factor is derived under the different duty ratio. The optimal coupling factor which corresponds to a minimum inductor ripple current becomes -0.5, i.e. a complete inverse coupling without leakage inductance, as the steady-state duty ratio operating point approaches 1/3 or 2/3. In an opposite manner, the optimal coupling factor value of zero, i.e. zero mutual inductance, is required when the steady-state duty ratio operating point approaches either zero or one. Coupled inductors having optimal coupling factor can minimize the ripple current of inductor and battery current resulting in a reliable and efficient operation of battery chargers.
Many alternatives have been discussed to reduce the medical expenditure and to use the medical resources effectively. Many studies about the economies of scale have been done for the last several decades. This study has analyzed the relationship between the number of beds and the mean expense per hospitalization day in Korea. A Cost Function Model was identified and we wanted to see the minimum optimal size with the cheapest mean expense per hospitalization day. The result is as follows; 1. In the Cost Function Mode, (the number of beds)$^{2}$, the number of personnel, productivity and training institutions are the factors that statisticaly influence the mean expenses. 2. By the univariate analysis the mean expense proved to be the smallest as the level of 150-200bed, The breaked down of the components of expenses shows that the mean labor cost is much different from the mean value of material and administration costs, and that hospital with 150-200 beds also have the minimal expense. The mean expense goes up dramatically in hospitals of 450 beds or more. 3. When the other conditions are constant, according to the multiple regression analysis of the mean expense per adjusted hospitalization day the minimum optimal size with the cheapest expense is a hospital with 191 beds and the hospital with 230 beds takes the lowest mean labor cost. The material or administration costs are not influenced by hospital size. This research has limitation in measuring the variables that influence hospital xpenses, in estimating hospital output by the number of beds in considering outpatient cost and in securing representativeness of hospitals because many hospitals made no responses to the research questionnare. But it is valuable and helpful for development of health policy to figure out the number of beds with the cheapest expense per hospitalization day.

In the citrate reduction method of gold nanoparticle (AuNP) synthesis, pH of the reaction mixture can have a considerable impact on the size and size distribution of AuNPs. In this work, effects of pH variation upon the size and its distribution were examined systematically. As the initial pH was change from 5.5 to 10.5, it showed an optimal pH around 7.5. At this pH, both of the size and the size distribution showed their minimum values, which was verified by transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. This occurrence of optimal pH was discussed with the results of in situ monitoring pH during the reaction of AuNP synthesis.
