  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of dietary activated carbon(0.9%) and fish oil(0, 1, 2, 4%) addition on the feed efficiency, blood-cholesterol, proximate composition, pH and minerals in breast and thigh of chicken meat. Broilers were randomly assigned to one of the five dietary treatment: 1) Control (commercial feed) 2) T1(commercial feed supplemented with 0.9% activated carbon) 3) T2 (commercial feed with 0.9% activated carbon and 1% fish oil) 4) T3 (commercial feed with 0.9% activated carbon and 2% fish oil) 5) T4 (commercial feed with 0.9% activated carbon and 4% fish oil). They were fed with one of the experimental diets for five weeks and slaughtered. After that, the meat samples were vacuum packaged and stored over a period of 10 days at 4$\pm$1$\^{C}$. When broilers were fed with dietary activated carbon and fish oil, the feed efficiency of birds were higher compared with that of control diet. The blood cholesterol was tended to decrease in dietary activated carbon and fish oil(p<0.05). However, effects of diets containing graded levels of activated carbon and fish oil on proximate composition were not found(p>0.05). The pH of all treatments significantly increased during the storage periods. The activated carbon and fish oil diet increased the calcium, potassium and sodium content of chicken meat, and tended to increase total mineral contents.

  • Coal gasification technology in the sector of domestic clean coal technologies is being into the limelight since recent dramatic rise of international oil price. In this study, we used a low rank coal from Inner Mongolia, China as a starting material for gasification. Various properties including optical, mineralogical, X-ray spectroscopic, X-ray diffraction, and drying property were measured and tested in order to estimate the suitability of the coal to gasification. The coal was identified as a brown coal of lignite group from the measurement of vitrinite reflectance. The coal has very low slagging and fouling potentials, and the ignition temperature is about $250^{\circ}C$. The major impurities consist of quartz, siderite, and clay minerals. Additionally, the coal had moisture content above 28%. Tests for finding effective drying method showed that the microwave drying is more effective than thermal drying.

  • Copper-red (Dongwha, Jinsa) is Korean traditional inorganic pigment used for red-coloring on the porcelain surface during Goryeo and Joseon Periods. Trace amounts of copper-red porcelains are handed down because of the technical difficulty of making and coloring of the pigment. It is known that copper ore sources were extensively distributed in Korea according to old literatures and some of them are still producing copper ore at this present. Main types of copper-bearing mineral in Korea are chalcopyrite ($CuFeS_2$) and malachite ($Cu_2CO_3(OH)_2$), and they are easily collected from the ground surface. This means Korea had geographical and economic geological advantages for supplying raw material of the pigment. These two minerals showed good red-coloring in color test for porcelain pigment. As a coloring element, copper showed micro size less than $5{\mu}m$ in diameter in glaze matrix. The dispersion of copper particle is the most decisive factor for red chromaticity of copper-red porcelain, as well as copper content of the pigment.

  • The effect of dietary zinc levels on macro mineral contents was investigated in rats. Rats were divided into three groups by zinc levels, such as low (50% of requirement, Zn/L), adequate (100%, Zn/A) and high (200%, Zn/H) levels of dietary zinc. The calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium contents in serum and organs were measured. The food intake was significantly higher in Zn/L group compared to that of Zn/H group. The body weight gain in Zn/H group was significantly lower than that of other two groups. There were no significant differences in liver, kidney and spleen weights. Also, serum calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium concentrations were not significantly changed by the zinc diet at any level. In the low zinc diet group, liver calcium content was significantly lower, but the magnesium and potassium contents in spleen were significantly higher than that in other groups. The calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium contents of kidney were not significantly different for any level of zinc. In conclusion, the macro mineral contents of liver and spleen in the normal rats were changed by zinc levels. Based on this study, the interaction between micro and macro minerals remains to be further studied.

  • Human hair is an excretory system for trace metals and thus metal content in human hair can reflect the body status. The investigation of trace elements in human hair has been correlated with the diagnosis of various diseases as well as the monitoring of deficiency statues in nutrition. Many chronic diseases may be related to mineral status, some may be related to toxic mineral. Hair samples were collected from 120 inhabitants of the city of Seoul, Korea. In this study the concentrations of 10 elements (Hg, Pb, Cd, Al, As, U, Bi, Sb, Ba, Be) in hair were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The conclusions showed that people in Seoul, Korea were affected by some kinds of toxic minerals. The Hg concentrations of male are higher than those of female and reference range. The mean concentration of Sb was higher in the female than male and reference range. In age distribution, the mean concentration of Hg was in 40's are higher than 20's and 30's and reference range. The concentrations of Al were the highest in the 20's. After analyzing, we concluded that a compounded treatment should be conducted, which considers the variety of factors related to detoxification.

  • Although faults can be found by geological surveys, the surface traces of faults are not easily discovered by traditional geological surveys due to alluvia. In and around faults and fracture zones, the electrical resistivity appears to be lower than that of the surroundings due to the content of groundwater and clay minerals. Therefore, electrical resistivity surveys are effective to search buried faults and fracture zones. The dipole-dipole array electrical resistivity surveys, which could show the two dimensional subsurface electrical resistivity structure, were carried out in two areas, Yongdang-ri, Woongsang-eup, Yangsan-si, Kyungsangnam-do and Malbang-ri, Woedong-eup, Kyungju-si, Kyungsangpook-do. The one was next to the Dongrae Fault and the other near the Ulsan Fault was close to the region in which debatable quaternary fault traces had been found recently. From each measured data set, the electrical resistivity cross-section was obtained using the inversion program the reliability of which was analyzed using analytic solutions. A low resistivity zone was found in the inverted cross-section from the Yongdang-ri area survey data, and two low resistivity zones were found in that from the Malbang-ri area survey data. They were almost vertical and were 15∼20 m wide. Accounting the shape and the very low resistivity values of those zones (<100 Ωm)in the inverted section, they were interpreted as fracture zones although they should be proven by trenching. The reliability of the interpretation might be improved by adding some more parallel resistivity survey lines and interpreting the results in 3 and/or adding other geophysical survey.
