The increased number of elderly in Korea presents great challenges for community nutrition programs. Strategies to enhance elderly nutrition are needed, as well as dietary advice that are reality-based and tailored to the need of the elderly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the overall effectiveness of an elderly nutrition improvement program(ENIP), by assessing changes in nutrition knowledge, attitudes, and behavior after program completion. ENIP was conducted in Suwon for 4 months in 1998 at 5 centers for the elderly. The program provided individual nutrition counseling and brief biweekly group education sessions. To stimulate participation and motivation, the elderly in two centers were served free milk packs(200ml) three time a week during the program(milk+education group), and the elderly in 3 other centers were served yoghurt on the program day(education group). Altogether, 102 subjects finished the program(milk+education group 67 ; education group 35). Data about nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes, diet records(24 hour recall) and dietary habit was collected before(baseline) and after the program(follow-up). The Drop-out rate for the milk+education group(2.9%) was significantly lower than that for the education group(30.0%)(p<.001). The Nutrition Knowledge fo females milk+education group increased significantly after the program, but no significant differences were observed in other groups. Over 60% of all the elderly showed positive responses to the healthy eating attitudes. Energy, protein, vitamin A, riboflavin, Calcium and Potassium intakes improved in the male milk+education group. The Vitamin C intake improved in the male education group. Energy and vitamin A intakes improved in the female milk+education group and energy, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, Ca nad P in the female education group. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the effects of food intake changes on overall nutrient quality. For all elderly, the fish intake explained 12.6% of the variance, followed by candy intake and vegetable intake(model $R^2$=19.6%). Dietary habits such as meal time regularity and salty food reduction were markedly improved in both groups. Sixty-one percent of the milk+education subjects stated their participation was voluntary and active, while 51% of education subjects did. Sixty four percent of the subjects stated their interest on diet increased remarkably through program participation. Considering the results, it is conjectured that ENIP had a great impact on nutrient intake, dietary attitudes and habits. Milk supplement showed no direct effects on elderly nutrition improvement, but it encouraged the program by reducing drop-out rates and inducing voluntary participation. Therefore milk supplement could enhance the community nutrition education program. Moreover it is strongly suggested that the ENIP be expanded to other communities.
We investigated the effect of the amount of body condition loss in the dry period and early lactation in 42 high-yielding Holstein-Friesian cows on milk yield and the share of fatty acids in milk fat. Energy reserves were estimated based on the body condition scoring (BCS) and backfat thickness (BFT). Milk yield and milk composition were determined over 305-d lactation. From d 6 to 60 of lactation, the concentrations of 43 fatty acids in milk fat were determined by gas chromatography. Cows were categorized based on body condition loss from the beginning of the dry period to the lowest point of the BCS curve in early lactation into three groups: low condition loss group (L) ${\leq}0.5$ points (n = 14); moderate condition loss group (M) 0.75 to 1.0 points (n = 16) and high condition loss group (H) >1.0 points (n = 12). Cows whose body energy reserves were mobilized at 0.8 BCS and 11 mm BFT, produced 12,987 kg ECM over 305-d lactation, i.e. 1,429 kg ECM more than cows whose BCS and BFT decreased by 0.3 and 5 mm, respectively. In group H, milk yield reached 12,818 kg ECM at body fat reserve mobilization of 1.3 BCS and 17 mm BFT. High mobilization of body fat reserves led to a significant (approx. 5%) increase in the concentrations of monounsaturated fatty acids-MUFA (mostly $C_{18:1}$ cis-9, followed by $C_{18:1}$ trans-11), a significant decrease in the levels of fatty acids adversely affecting human health, and a drop in the content of linoleic acid, arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid in milk fat. In successive weeks of lactation, an improved energy balance contributed to a decrease in the concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) and an increase in the conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) content of milk fat.
The objectives of this study were to characterize the changes occurring in the levels of insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I and IGF-II) in bovine milk during a one-year lactation period, and to determine the parameters affecting IGF content in bovine milk. Milk was collected individually from lactating Holstein cows (n=70), and IGF-I and -II levels were determined via radioimmunoassay, using 125I after acid-ethanol treatment. The proximate compositions of the milk samples were determined using a near-infrared milk analyzer. The data were analyzed by the GLM and CORR procedures using SAS software to determine significant differences (p<0.05) occurring within groups (dairy farms, lactation periods, season, and parity). We noted an approximately six-fold reduction in the IGF-I concentration (from 2,462.7 to 353.0 ng/ml) and a three-fold drop in the IGF-II concentration (from 929.1 to 365.7 ng/ml) in the bovine colostrum, between 6 h after parturition and 18 h after parturition. IGF-I and -II content, measured at the early, middle, and late stages of lactation did not change significantly throughout the entirety of the lactation period. Interestingly, parity did not significantly affect IGF-I content, but did significantly affect IGF-II content between the primiparous and multiparous cows. We also found there were no significant relationships between IGF-I and total protein content or somatic cell counts (p<0.05).
Two experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of Murrah buffalo cows pulling sledges under field conditions on milk production and milk composition. In Exp. 1, 24 buffaloes in the fourth month of lactation were used. They were allotted to four treatments according to a $2{\times}2$ factorial arrangement: work or no work, and with or without urea-molasses cake supplementation (700 g/animal/day). Feeds consisted of 20 kg fresh elephant grass (18% DM), 2 kg rice bran per day and rice straw ad lib. The animals worked in pairs three hours per day (work done: $3464{\pm}786kJ/d$) five days a week for three months. Three teams worked in the morning and the others worked in the afternoon in the same day. The following day the working times were switched. In Exp. 2, 16 lactating Murrah buffalo cows in the sixth month of lactation were allotted to two groups (work and no work). They were fed with fresh ruzi grass (Brachiaria ruziziensis) ad lib. supplemented with 2 kg rice bran and 700 g urea-molasses cake. The working regime was similar to that of the first experiment (work done: $3753{\pm}879kJ/d$) and they worked for two months. In the first experiment, there was a small but significant drop (p<0.05) in milk yield from 3.5 to 3.0 kg/day due to work, but there was no supplementation effect. The working buffaloes lost 5.2 kg whereas the non-working animals gained 9.7 kg during the three months (p<0.05). Supplementation increased live weight by 9.9 kg as compared to -5.4 kg for those not supplemented (p<0.05). Milk composition was not affected by the treatments. In the second experiment, daily milk production was similar for both treatments and approximately 3 kg. No significant differences were found in milk composition or in live weight changes for working and non-working groups, respectively. It was concluded that work may cause a reduction in milk yield and a loss of live weight on a poor rice straw diet but that an appropriate supplementation can alleviate this situation.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of season and location on activities of enzyme produced by psychrotrophic bacteria isolated from raw milk located in Kyunggi region of South Korea. Agar diffusion and colorimetric methods were used for the lipase and protease activities of psychrotrophic bacteria. Intensities of dark blue and transparent ring around colony were compared for activity measurement. Nutrient agar with 1% skim milk added was employed for measuing protease activity. 14 strains of Arthrobacter russicus with lipase activity and 19 strains of Chryserobacterium shigense with protease activities were found to be present. It was found that Acinetobacter genomospecies 10 (match %: 99.90) isolated from B region in fall was the most lipolytic species, whereas Serratia liquefaciens (match %: 99.39) isolated from the same region in spring was the most proteolytic species. Growth curve of Acinetobacte and Serratia liquefaciens was a typical sigmoidal form. Lipase activity increased with incubation time, but its activity began to drop at stationary to motality phase. Optimum condition for incubation time, pH and temperature for extracellular lipase from Acinetobacter genomospecies 10 (match %: 99.90) was 12 h, 8.5, and $45^{\circ}C$, respectively. Extracellular protease from Serratia liquefaciens (match %:99.39) had the same optimum incubation time and pH as extracellular lipase, but optimum temperature was $35^{\circ}C$.
Lao-chao is a traditional Chinese fermented rice product with a sweet and fruity flavor, containing high levels of glucose, a little alcohol and milk-clotting characteristics. In order to optimize commercial production of lao-chao, Rhizopus javanicus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae were selected as the mold and yeast starter, respectively. A commercial mixed starter (chiu-yao) was used as control. Fermentation of the experimental combination revealed a sharp drop in pH (to 4.5) on the fourth day, remaining constant thereafter. Content of reducing sugars gradually decreased throughout the entire fermentation period. Of the free amino acids, higher quantities of alanine, leucine, proline, glutamic acid, glutamine and $NH_3$ were noted. For sugars, glucose revealed the highest concentration, while organic acid levels, including those for oxalic, lactic, citric and pyroglutamic acid, increased throughout the fermentation period. Twenty-one compounds were identified by gas chromatography from aroma concentrates of the lao-chao culture filtrate, prepared using the headspace method. For the flavor components, higher quantities of ethanol, fusel oil and ester were determined in both culture filtrates. In regard to the evaluation of yogurt-like product, there were significant differences in alcoholic smell, texture and curd firmness.
This research is the study of raindrop rendering. In case of rendering for raindrop in existing games, it is used on sprites images or roughly raindrops images using texture rendering. These methods are similar to the shape and size of all rendered raindrop. That's why players are limitations to provide a sense of reality. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a method for generating raindrop considering surface tension and contac angle, the amount of water, implements the raindrop using Unity3D engine. To demonstrate the usefulness of this paper, this paper shows the generated raindrop in accordance with the change in the area and pulling force in surface tension formula. This paper can help to provide the actuality in game in case of rendering the raindrop.
This study was carried out to investigate the fermentation characteristics and storage of set-type yoghurt added mugwort extracts(AME) such as pH, growth of lactic acid bacteria, number of viable cells, viscosity, and sensory characteristics during 24 hours fermentation and 15 days storage. Addition of mugwort extracts was grown rapidly of lactic acid bacteria rather than that of control and also 4 or 8% AME groups were grown similar to control. The drop of AME pH of broth was less compared with control during incubation of lactic acid bacteria. The growth of lactic acid bacteria during incubation of AME yoghurt was not different of viable cell count between AME group and control in beginning time, but the viable cell count of AME groups were increased depended opon addition quantity of AME in ending time. Addition of mugwort extracts was not affect on pH change during yoghurt fermentation and increased a lactic acid bacteria number as well as no effect of yoghurt fermentation in ending time. The viscosity of yoghurt was almost not changed 3 hours after yoghurt mix and increased rapidly 6 hours after yoghurt mix. Although control and 0.5% AME group showed maximum viscosity at 18 hours of fermentation, 1 and 2% AME group showed linear increase until 24 hours of fermentation. Mugwort did not affect pH and viable cel number of lactic acid bacteria during 15 days storage 24 hours after fermentation. Sensory evaluation of the AME yoghurt showed that flavour, texture and acid taste were not affected by addition of mugwort. However, the appearance and taste were dropped by addition of mugwort.

Trypanosomiasis is caused by a pathogenic protozoan of the genus Trypanosoma, being Trypanosoma vivax the most important agent for cattle. The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the expansion of T. vivax infection in different mesoregions of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and describe the clinicopathological findings of trypanosomiasis in cattle. The diagnosis was based on visualization of the parasite in blood smears and DNA detection of T. vivax in the blood of live cows and tissues of necropsied animals by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Thirty suspected herds were tested, of which 11 were positive for T. vivax. The most frequent clinical signs were anemia, apathy, drop in milk production, weight loss, reproductive disorders, and nervous signs. Concomitant diseases, such as malignant edema, pneumonia and increased cases of mastitis were associated with T. vivax infection. Three cows were necropsied and the most significant findings were low body condition score, pale mucous and spleen with white pulp hyperplasia. The results demonstrated the expansion of T. vivax infection in Minas Gerais, that PCR-associated blood smears are promising for diagnosis, and that other diseases often occur concomitantly to T. vivax infection in regions with trypanosomiasis in cattle.
In the west coastal soft ground, the static and dynamic loading tests for PHC piles which were executed using light driving without injecting cement milk were carried out and the correlation was analyzed. Initial dynamic loading test used hydraulic hammer(ram weight 70kN) and final average penetration effect presented 3.0 to 8.0mm at 0.8m drop. Then final allowable bearing capacity using CAPWAP presented 776.4 to 1,053.6kN a pile. The static loading tests which were performed at the other piles loaded 200% of the design load dividing by eight phases. As the result, total settlement was 15.97 to 16.38mm and residual settlement was 4.48 to 5.38mm, but both yielding and ultimate load can't be estimated. Therefore, allowable bearing capacity was determined larger than 1,200kN a pile regarding maximum test load as yielding load. Thus, it showed that allowable bearing capacity of the dynamic loading test was larger than static loading test in 1.54 to 1.14 times.
