The expiration date of high energetic materials(HEM), such as HMX, RDX, TNT, is important. If the expiration date is violated, the expected specification of HEM would not be satisfied which may cause a different conclusion in an urgent situation. As a result, this HEM should maintain fresh conditions which cause the accumulation of waste HEM. If HEM is landfilled during demilitarization, the impact on living organizations is serious. Additionally, landfilling HEM has a possibility of explosion. In this research, the process flow diagram of the demilitarization gas treatment process was simulated while satisfying the law of the environment in Korea. After validation of simulation, it was optimized thermodynamically using Heat Exchanger Network Synthesis(HENs). This study is expected to enhance the energy efficiency of the original facility by suggesting developed designs. This research was supported by Agency of Defense Development NE32 Korea. Currently, drones are used in various fields such as transportation, agriculture and military. Especially, drones for military use are developed and utilized in many ways such as reconnaissance and bombing to minimize one's own damages. Nevertheless, they are developed as new weapons of modern types, so it is difficult to use them together with existing weapons. In this study, a drone program for effective bombing of mortar, which is often used in modern warfare, is developed. In mortar, a forward soldier comprehends the location of enemy for its distance and altitude, input them in data computer of launching angle, and applies the result value to cannon to launch. However, the existing method has low accuracy of bombing because observing shall be done within 1km from the target, and measuring accurate direction and velocity of the wind is difficult. Whereas, in the program of this study, the location of target, GPS, direction and velocity of the wind, and altitude are measured through drone. Each digit is used to calculate bombing specification for optimal bombing through the calculating formula of launching angle. In addition, when specifications are input in the program, the calculation is done automatically, so that it can be used in various mortars and shells. With the use of the program in this study, the location of enemy can be comprehended, and bombing specifications can be calculated quickly. It also enables the intensity of the wind to be applied for accurate bombing.

Crashworthy fuel cells have been widely implemented to rotorcraft and rendered a great contribution for improving the survivability of crews and passengers. Since the embryonic stage of military rotorcraft history began, the US army has developed and practised a detailed military specification documenting the unique crashworthiness requirements for rotorcraft fuel cells to prevent most fatality due to post-crash fire. Foreign manufacturers have followed their long term experience to develop their fuel cells, and have reflected the results of crash impact tests on the trial-and-error based design and manufacturing procedures. Since the crash impact test itself takes a long-term preparation efforts together with costly fuel cell specimens, a series of numerical simulations of the crash impact test with digital mock-ups is necessary even at the early design stage to minimize the possibility of trial-and-error with full-scale fuel cells. In the present study a number of numerical simulations on fuel cell crash impact tests are performed with a crash simulation software, Autodyn. The resulting equivalent stresses are further analysed to evaluate a number of appropriate design parameters and the artificial neural network and simulated annealing method are simultaneously implemented to optimize the crashworthy performance of fuel cells.

Current military command information system uses electronic equipment a lot on which semiconductor chip is attached. It seems its' importance will increase more with latest information communication technology developing. Electronic equipment which uses electricity contains regular tolerance to high output electric signal. And EMC specification is the standardized of this electronic equipment's tolerance. On the other hand, the Institute of Atomic Energy Research has ever declared that high output electromagnetic pulse(EMP) will be broken out within the radius of 170Km when 10kt nuclear explosion occurs at an altitude of 40Km above Seoul. Then, the region suffer from the damage of most electronic equipments. Therefore, the norm to protect the influences in that case is defined by EMP protection specification. Most common electronic equipments meet the EMC norm, but there is no way to check whether they meet the EMP norm or not. That is because it is difficult to check whether they meet EMP protection norm and is on the matter of cost. Except inevitable cases, there is no review of checking whether they meet the norm or not. Considering the above, in this research, we speculate about the measures to improve military EMP protection ability by analyzing the EMC-EMP correlation and checking the EMP protection ability of general electronic equipment through the analysis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to suggest weapon system specifications for requirements of Condition-Based Maintenance(CBM/CBM+). Methods: The military documents and case studies with regard to condition-based maintenance were reviewed. Representative Korea defense specifications of weapon system such as an aircraft, a C4ISR etc. were analyzed and investigated the level of requirement for maintainability was. Results: Condition-based maintenance was defined in both U.S. instruction and Korean directive. While deparment of defense(U.S.) provide a guidebook for CBM+, detailed instruction was not sufficient for Korean. Ministry of national defense(ROK) define the CBM+ by means of IPS element which should be developed along with the system development. The maintainability was barely included in Korean defense specifications, except for BIT(Built-in test) function. As a first step for defining the condition-based maintenance requirement in defense specification, this study suggests a standard form for data needed to acquire according to types of system, fault, failure, and so on. Conclusion: The empirical researches on CMB/CBM+ with domestic weapon systems are not enough, and a logic which leads the maintenance strategy to CMB/CBM+ is not solved. Through technical researches and institutional improvements including this study, we hope that condition-based maintenance would be fully established in the Korean defense field.

Airfield pavements, such as runways and taxiways, are essential for smooth take-off and landing of fixed-wing aircraft and are the most important installation for the military to carry out air operations during wartime. Therefore, in wartime, it is necessary to reduce the damage to these installations and repair them in the shortest possible time. Recently, the pattern of attack is changing from the use of conventional high explosive which is to create large craters to the use of multiple warheads weapon system which is to effectively attack enemy's airfields but unrelated to accuracy. Hence in this study, through identifying the specification and composition of multiple warheads weapon system, we checked the protection performance and damage patterns of the pavement when explosion occurred on the installed military runway and taxiway by the multiple warheads weapon system. And The multiple warheads weapon systems is able to cause extensive damage but the destructive power of each warhead is not as great, so I would like to propose an airfield pavement design plan for minimal protection against such attacks.
Purpose: Recently, many quality issues are aroused in military forces, such as failures in K-series weapons, combat boots defects and 40mm ammunition explosion accident. To address these problems, this paper suggests to use so called, Defense Quality Score, which is based on Taguchi loss function and developed in this research. Methods: Current defense specification states only the minimum requirement to produce the military supplies. Therefore, it is not easy to indue the continuous quality improvement of the supplies. This research suggests to use the defense quality score which measures the current status of defense supplies'quality characteristics. Results: We applied the defense quality score concept into the hot pepper sauce and long time stockpiled ammunition. We first categorize the quality characteristics into three categories, then assign the certain amount of score based on the importance of the characteristics. Lastly, we applied the modified Taguchi loss function to calculate the achieved score of the characteristics. The perfect score is 100 and the closer to the score, the better product it indicates. Conclusions: In this research, we developed the modified Taguchi loss function to apply into the korean defense supplies. The loss function is utilized to calculate the achieved level of satisfaction of the supplies based on the defense specifications. The application of defense quality score may help to stimulate the continuous quality improvement and encourage the good will quality competition among the military providers.
