  • To clarify the cytogenetic features of the chicken grunt, Parapristipoma trilineatum, small yellow croaker, Larimichthys polyactis, and brown croaker, Miichthys miiuy, in Jeju, Korea, karyotype analysis was performed. The karyotype of chicken grunt and brown croaker consists of 24 pairs of telocentrics [2n=48, fundamental number (FN)=48], and small yellow croaker consists of 3 pairs of submetacentrics and 21 pairs of telocentrics (2n=48, FN=54). No evidence of polymorphism, including aneuploidy or sex-related heteromorphic chromosomes, was found in any specimens examined in this study.

  • In order to improve the gill nets for croaker, Miichthys miiuy which is proper to the fishermen's income ans fisheries resource management, we had studied to the net height of present gill nets (mesh size 160mm, 50 mesh in depth), experimental gill nets-I(mesh size 150mm, 68 mesh in depth) and experimental gill nets-II(mesh size 142mm, 75 mesh in depth) in wter using the gill nets design ans analysis simulation system, and then investigated and analyzed the catch efficiency of each gill nets through the field fishing experiments. The net height of emperimental gill nets-I and experimental gill nets-II in water were estimated respectively about 1.5 times and 1.3 times higher than present gill nets which the net height is about 3.5m as the results of simulation considering the current of fishing fields. Total number of croakers which were caught by the persent gill nets was 62(body length 300~1,200mm), total catch weight was 398.7kg (mean 0.6kg/sheet). Total number of croakers which were caught by the experimental gill nets- I was 68(body length 600~1,100mm), total catch weight was 391.6kg (mean 1.2kg/sheet). Total number of croakers which were caught by the experimental gill nets-II was 28(body length 400~900mm), total catch weight was 99.2kg (mean 0.3kg/sheet).

  • Eye growth and lens diameter of brown croaker Miichthys miiuy were positively allometric between hatching and 180 days post-hatch (d.p.h.). Eye growth in relation to head length and head height was nearly isometric. Eyes were formed completely at 14 d.p.h. At this age, the eye has a crystalline lens, an optic nerve fiber layer, a ganglion cell layer, an inner plexiform layer, an inner nuclear layer, an outer plexiform layer, an outer nuclear layer, an outer limiting membrane, and a pigment epithelium. The essential demands that must be met by the retina in this species pertain to light sensitivity and spatial resolution.

  • The taxonomic revision of the family Sciaenidae was made based on the specimens collected from the south-western coasts of the Korea from 1989 to May 1992. The family Sciaenidae from Korea was classified into 12 species belong to 8 genera : Pseudosciaena crocea, Pseudosciaena polyactis, Collichthys lucidus, Collichthys niveatus, Larimichthys rathbunae, Johnius grypotus ; Nibea albiflora, Nibea mitsukurii, Nibea diacanthus, Miichthys miiuy, Argyrosomus argentatus and Atrobucca nibe. Six species, previonsely reported as the family Sciaenidae from Korea, were transferred into different generic name or specific name : Pseudosciaena manchurica into P. polyactis ; Nibea goma into N. diacanthus ; into Miichthys miiuy ; Nibea argentatus into Argyrosomus argentatus ; Nibea nibe into Atrobucca nibe and Johnius belengerii into J. grypotus. The species Collichthys fragilis was identified as the same species of C. lucidus, based on the number of light organs just above abdominal midline, the shape of occipital crest and first spine of anal fin. Keys to genera and species are provided together with description and distributional data.

  • Sex differentiation of the brown croaker Miichthys miiuy (Basilewsky) is described from hatching to the 120th day post-hatching (dph) (water temperature $24^{\circ}C$). Primordial germ cells (PGCs) were observed on the 20th dph (10.4 mm total length (TL), 0.14 g body weight (BW), and began to protrude into the peritoneal cavity from the 40th dph (19.4 mm TL, 0.39 g BW). On the 65th dph (31.3 mm TL, 0.93 g BW, $1,560D^{\circ}$ (degree-days)), initial ovarian differentiation was identified by the PGCs with condensed chromatin, and their transformation into meiotic oocytes. By the 120th dph (4.60 mm TL, 1.38 g BW, $2,880D^{\circ}$), the oocytes were in the perinucleolus stage and had increased from 20 to $40{\mu}m$ in diameter. While ovaries gradually grew after sex was differentiated, testes continued to multiply from the 65th dph. On the 80th dph (37.9 mm TL, 1.39 g BW, $1,920D^{\circ}$), the beginning of testis lobule formation was indicated by the occurrence of spermatogonial cysts enveloped by somatic cells in some of the testes. On the 120th dph, the testis lobules of some of the fish contained all germ cell stages through to the spermatocytes. Therefore, the sex differentiation type of the brown croaker is identified as gonochoristic.

  • Salted semi-dried brown croaker, Miichthys miiuy, has been proposed as a palatable seafood in Korea due to its specific texture, taste, and nutritional content. This study was conducted to characterize the sanitary quality of commercial salted semi-dried brown croaker for the development of high quality salted semi-dried products. The chemical properties ranged from 64.2 to 77.1% (mean $74.7{\pm}3.5%$) for moisture content, from 2.1 to 9.5% for salinity, from 14.1 to 58.1 mg/100 g for volatile basic nitrogen, and from 19.1 to 107.2 meq/kg for peroxide values. The viable cell counts and Escherichia coli were 4.2~8.3 log(CFU/g) [mean: 6.2 log(CFU/g)] and 18>~4.6 log(MPN/100 g), respectively. The chemical and microbial results of commercial salted semi-dried brown croaker suggest that provisions should be established for development of high quality salted semi-dried products.

  • To determine the fish fauna and their characteristics of the Sohuksando Island located in the South - Western Sea of Korea, samples were collected from June 1993 to August 1995. 128 species belonging to 59 families and 97 genera were identified. Among them the order Perciformes were about 42.2% of total species, as 54 species belonging to 27 families and 44 genera, and order Scorpaeniformes, 19.5%, as 25 species belonging to 8 families and 15 genera. Besides of these groups, order Pleuronectiformes were about 12.5%, as 16 species belonging to 5 families and 13 genera, and order Tetraodontiformes, 6.3%, as 8 species belonging to 3 families and 4 genera. Cypselurus unicolor, Siganus canaliculutus and Tarphops elegans from Sohuksando Island are reported here as first record species from Korea. • In this study we sought to determine the food fraud by discriminating species of commercial seafood product such as Larimichthys polyactis, Larimichthys crocea, Pennahia argentatus, and Miichthys miiuy, which are difficult to morphologically discriminate. After amplifying the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene of the reference fish, the DNA sequences of the amplified PCR products were analyzed. As a result, a 655 bp sequence for species identification was selected for use as DNA barcodes. To confirm the DNA data and primer set, the DNA barcode sequence of each fish was compared to that in that in the NCBI. All of the DNA barcode data were matched with the gene sequence of each fish in the NCBI. A total of 32 processed seafood products (8 L. polyactis, 12 L. crocea, 3 Pennahia argentatus, and 9 Miichthys miiuy) were investigated. Homology of 97% or more in DNA sequences was judged as the same species. As a result of the monitoring, there were no discovered cases of forgery or alteration. However, the use of a raw material name having no matching standard name in the Korea Food Code may cause consumer confusion. Therefore, it is suggested that the standard name or scientific name be co-labeled with the raw material name on seafood products to prevent consumer confusion.
