  • This study examined chemical characterization in commercial dark-fleshed fish (mackerel Scomber japonicus, Japanese Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus niphonius, and Pacific herring Clupea pallasii) to determine their suitability for use as raw materials for seafood products. The volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), heavy metal, radioactivity, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), benzo[a]pyrene, and histamine concentrations were measured. The VBN in all of the dark-fleshed fish was less than 20 mg/100 g, which is the limit for raw materials for seafood processing. Except for mackerel based on the lead (Pb) standards of the European Union (EU), Taiwan, and CODEX, and all fish based on the cadmium (Cd) standards for China and the EU, the commercial dark-fleshed fish were free from total mercury (Hg), Pb, and Cd based on domestic and foreign standards. The radioactivity, polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), benzo[a]pyrene, and histamine concentrations of the commercial dark-fleshed fish all adhered to the domestic and foreign standards. The commercial dark-fleshed fish tested could all be used as raw materials for seafood products, except for some exported products.

  • In order to promote efficiency of upstream and downstream migration of fishes, this study has developed a combined fishway of herring-bone bottom baffle type and brush type fishways. The results obtained are as follows : 1. In a channel with constant incline, the velocity of current generally shows a distinct tendency of acceleration as it goes down the stream. But in the hydraulic experiment of herring-bone bottom baffle type fishway, the velocity reached its maximum only at 0.4m/sec, and it tended to be stable without any acceleration. 2. The velocity in the brush type fishway showed a distinct tendency of acceleration as the discharge increased. But its greatest velocity was only 0.3m/sec, and its velocity change according to the discharge increase was only 0.15m/sec at maximum. 3. The maximum velocity in the combined type fishway was less than half of the blast speed of the poorest swimmer, the juvenile eel with 90mm of body length. So any species of fishes are supposed to be able to migrate upstream from the estuary through this combined type fishway. 4. The field experiment of upstream migration showed that the combined type fishway can promote efficiency of upstream and downstream migration of any species of fishes.

  • Conservation of wetlands are important because wetlands are hatcheries for fishes and habitat for migratory birds and mammals. Wetlands also function as a filter for polluted water and material and transition zone for harboring numerous species of plants and animals. This paper reviewed the importance of wetland conservation and policy on management of wetlands in Korea. Wetland Conservation Act(1999) and Maritime Management Act(1999) are two legislation for conservation of wetlands. Wetland Conservation Act is issued by both Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. The definition of wetlands are so diverse, but this paper categorized wetlands as both natural and man-made lakes, mud flat areas and inland wetlands. Management application was considered for each wetland categories.

  • Fish fauna, difference of stable isotope ratio between freshwater and seawater, and trophic guilds of freshwater fishes were investigated in the lower Geum River. The study was conducted in 2011, and total study area was about 30 km of 20 km upstream and 10 km downstream from the Geum River estuary barrage. Only freshwater fishes were used for analyzing trophic guilds, and discriminant function analysis (DFA) was utilized to reclassify trophic guilds based on stable isotope ratio. Fish fauna in freshwater and seawater areas were entirely different each other, but small number of migratory species such as Coilia nasus and Chelon haematocheilus occurred both areas. Other species were not collected in the different areas because they did not have physiological ability to adapt different salinity concentrations. Stable isotope ration of two areas were different considerably due to food sources. Estuary and seawater fishes uptake food sources originated from marine, and freshwater fishes were from freshwater and terrestrial. Some migratory species showed reverse stable isotope ratio. Even though they collected in freshwater, they showed stable isotope ratio of seawater. This is because ecological characteristics of each species. Trophic guilds of freshwater fishes were reclassified by DFA, and showed slight difference with literatures. However, because this result is related with ontogenetic shift of species, more studies are needed to explain exact and correct trophic guilds. Stable isotope ratio can be changed among regions, seasons and ontogenetic stage, thus we always consider these aspects when analyzing results to get a right answer.

  • To investigate the effects of artificial vegetation island (AVI) on fish distribution, we compared fish fauna from artificial vegetation island (AVI) area, which installed in 2000, natural vegetation area (NVA) and vegetation-free area (VFA) at Kyungan Stream area of Lake Paldang from Jul. to Nov., 2005. Results showed that 11 families 23 genera 24 fish species were distributed in the AVI and NVA. Squalidus japonicus coreanus, a small-size fish which generally lives at the downstream, dominated absolutely in the individual numbers. However, only 6 families 11 genera 12 species of fishes caught at the VFA, and dominant fishes were Hemibarbus labeo and Erythroculter erythropterus, a medium to large-size migratory fishes which live in mid-depth of water column. The dominance index was high at the AVI (0.778) and NVA (0.868), whereas the diversity index and evenness index were high at the VFA. Fish distribution at AVI was similar to that of the NVA in numbers of species, indicating that the AVI could playa role as spawning and inhabitation zone to a variety of fishes. We believe that AVI may be used for a restoration of the damaged and disturbed littoral ecosystem.

  • Fish fauna and community structures in freshwater were analyzed in the streams (12 stations) of the Bogil Island from May to September 2015. Total numbers of the sampled species and genus (9 families) were 21 and 17, respectively. Gobiidae was the most dominant taxa, which accounted for 47.6% (10 species) of the total species, and the relative abundance, based on the number of individuals, was 60.4% (1,157 individuals). Subdominant families were three taxa of Cyprinidae (3 species; 500 ind.), Mugilidae (2 species; 168 ind.) and Mugilidae (2 species; 128 ind.). The dominant species, based on the relative abundance, was Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (20.7%) and the subdominant species were Gymnogobius urotaenia (19.5%), Leucopsarion petersii (17.2%) and Chelon haematocheilus (8.5%). These species were composed of upstream-resident fish as well as migratory fishes, so the streams of the Bogil Island had unique characteristics in the fish compositions. Based on all the species sampled, 9 species (42.9%) were primary freshwater fishes, 11 species (52.4%) were peripheral fishes and 1 species (4.8%) was amphidromous fish. Korean endemic species and exotic species were not found in the streams of Bogil Island. According to the analysis of fish community structure, species richness index and species diversity index were highest (1.831, 1.957) in the Site 8 and lowest in the Site 4. In the meantime, the dominance index was highestin the Site 4 (1.00) and lowest in theSite 8 (0.17).

  • In this paper, ascending functions of the pool-and-weir fishway which has been established for the upstream migration of migratory fish at Jamsil Weir in the lower part of the Han River was assessed by applying tile Existing Fishway Measurement Method, and measures to improve these functions were suggested. The primary fish which ascended the fishway during the period of measurement was Erythroculter erythropterus Basilewsky, greater than 29cm in the body length. A total of 361 individual fish were collected with traps established at the exit of the fishway The maximum ascending capacity for the fish was 2.53${\times}$10^{-3}$ fish/hr/g. The fishway of Jamsil Weir does not satisfy the various fish species inhabiting in the river. Especially, small fishes of lower swimming ability may not ascend the fishway because the difference in water levels between upper and lower pools in the fishway was too large at the exit and there was too much discharge flowing into the fishway. This fishway does not have a roll in the ascending function for other species except Erythroculter erythropterus Basilewsky and Hemibarbus labeo Pallas, for which swimming ability is great. In order to improve the ascending function of the fishway, the structures of the fishway need to be changed so that various species in the river can easily ascend and the fishway function be taken into consideration in operation of the gates of the weir. Additional construction of fishways on both sides of the lower flow channel are needed to correct a decline in the fishway effectiveness due to continuous flow over the fixed part of the weir.

  • Garolim Bay is not only important fishing ground but also expected area for the tidal power plant. The construction and operation of tidal power plant will make change the ecosystem of this bay. Therefore, the actual fisheries stocks should be precisely understood for the effect estimation and overall utilization of the bay after the construction of the tidal power plant. During the study period from January through December in 1981, forty-six adult fishes species, 3 species of fish egg and 25 fishes larvae species have occurred in the bay. Considering the result on monthly distribution of eggs and larvae, the inner area of the bay seems to be important as nursing ground of larvae spawned at the outside bay in winter, e. g., Ammodytes personatus, and Enedrias sp. This inner bay is also major spawning ground for many species spawning in spring and summer, e. g., Gobiidae, Konosirus punctatus, Engraulis japonica, etc. Taking into consideration the annual mean production for three years($1978{\sim}1980$), there are two major fishing seasons. The one is in May-June for Enedrias larvae stock, and the another in October-November for big eyed herring stock. For the mariculture stocks, short necked clam, oyster and laver are important species. After construction of the tidal power plant, the migratory species, i. e., larvae of Enedrias and Ammodytes personatus, Mugil cephalus, Konosirus punctatus, etc. will be directly damaged by the interuption of migration route. On the otter hand, the change of physico-chemical factors of seawater will also affect the ecosystem of the bay. Consequently, for the overall utilization of the bay after construction, the actual ecosystem including the fisheries stocks, must bs precisely revealed, and the mechanical designs, e. g., sluice position and its demension, should be also considered with these biological characters of the bay.
